L. W. HOSTETTLER JOURNAL BOX LID Filed Nov. 25, 1923 Patented Sept. 18, 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEIGH W. HOSTETTLER, OF TARENTUM, PENNSYLVANIA, AS$IGNOR TO ALLEGHENY STEEL COMPANY, OF BBACKENRIDGE, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENN- SYLVANIA.
JOURNAL-BOX LID.
Application filed November 23, 1923.
This invention relates to journal box lids and closing means therefor.
An object of this invention is to produce closing means for journal box lids of the 6 hoodless type whereby the lid when in closed position is caused to bear on the top as well as the bottom of the box face.
Another object is to produce closing means for journal box lids of the hoodless type by means of which the lid is caused to bear over the entire box face even though relatively large clearances exist between the lid scrolls and the hinge pin or between the hinge pin and the box lug pin hole or both.
These as well as other objects which will readily appear to those skilled in this art I attain by means of the device described in the specification and illustrated inthe drawings accompanying and forming a part of this application. In the drawings Figure 1 is a side sectional elevation of a. hoodless type lid and closing m'eans therefor embodying this invention and Fig. 2 1s a front view in elevation of the lid and closing means dis- 25 closed in Fig. 1.
While this invention is applicable to lids other than pressed steel lids and to lids for use in connection with many styles of boxes,
for the purposes of this application I have shown the same in combination with a pressed steel lid'and a standard A. R. A. journal box.
The lid as illustrated is provided on its inner face with a flat surface 3 which when the lid is in closed position bears over the entire box face. The journal box, which as shown is of standard A. R. A. design, is provided with a box lug having substantially flat angularly disposed bearing or camfaces 4 and 5 which lie in planes parallel to the axis of the box lug pin hole 6.
The lid is provided with scrolls 77 which are elongated as shown in Fig. 1 so as to provide relatively greatclearances between the scrolls and the hinge pin, to insure that the lid will get its bearing entirely on the box face and will bear on the top sides and bottom of the same.
The lid is provided with :1. depending guard flange 9 and with a lip 10 at the center of its bottom edge by means of which the same may be raised or opened. The lid is also preferably reinforced 0r still'ened by means of a corrugation 11. At 12 an abutment is struck within stirrup 14.
Serial No. 676,559.
up from the body of the lid to form a stop for the lid closing-spring 13.
The lid closing device comprises spring 13 and a spring support stirrup 14. The spring l8 a flat leaf spring laterally tapered toward its free or outer end as shown in Fig. 2. At
its inner end 15 it is bent to cooperate with The stirrup acts as a fulcrum for the spr1ng, and supports the spring from the hinge pm 8. The stirrup is supported from tlle lungc pin by side strap members 18-48 wlnchare pierced to receive the hinge pin. The stirrup, spring support or fulcrum is independent of the, lid and is capable of independent movement with relation thereto.
The inner end of the spring is secured to the l d by means of a cross strap 19 which straddles the spring and which at its opposite ends is riveted to the lid.
When the lid is in closed position the outer free end of the spring, which at that point 15 curved back upon itself, bears on bearing face 4 of the box lug and when in open position on bearing face 5 of the lug. Since the bearing face 4 which is substantially fiat stands at an angle at the plane of the box face the lid closing device is allowed free movement in closing the lid. The spring is a flat V-shaped s ring havmg a long leg and a short leg an in reality bears upon or co-operates with the bearing face at a point intermediate its ends.
It will be understood that the closing spring may be varied in form without departing from. the spirit of this invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is: 1. The combination with a journal box having a lun e pin lug provided with angularlv disposed caring faces, of a lid pivoted to the lug, a spring at one end secured to the lid and at an intermediate point cooperating with said bearing faces, and a fulcrum for said spring pivotally connected to said lug and supporting said spring at. its other end. 2. The combination with a journal box having a lug provided with angularly dispus-ml bearing faces, of a lid hinged to the lug and a lid closing device comprising a stirrup portion fits erate with said bearing faces.
4:. The combination with a journalbox having a hinge pin lug rovided with angularly disposed bearing aces, of a hinge pin extending through said lug, a lid mounted on said pin, and a lid closing spring at one end operatively en aging the outer face of the lid and at an intermediate point cooperating with said bearing faces and a support for the o posite end of said spring mounted on sai pin.
5. The combination with a journal box having a hinge pin lug provided with a plurality of angularly disposed bearing faces, of" a lid, a hinge in securing said lid to said lug, a Hat V-s aped spring at one end secured to the lid and at an intermediate point cooperating with said bearing faces and a spring support carried upon said pin and movable independently of said lid.
6. The combination with a journal box having a hinge pin lug provided with centrally disposed angularly arranged bearing faces, a box lid provided with ears lying on opposite sides of said hinge pin lug, .a hinge pin extending through said lug and said ears, a flat spring at one end secured to the lid and at a point intermediate its ends cooperating with said bearing faces and a support for said spring engaging therewith at its other end and mounted on said pin for movement independently of said lid.
7. The combination with a journal box having a hinge pin lug provided with angular-1y disposed bearing faces of a hinge pin extendingthrough said lug, a lid mounted on said pin, a lid closin spring having one end connected to said id and cooperating with said bearing faces at a point 1ntermediate its ends, and means mounted on said hinge pin cooperating with the other end of said spring for causing it to apply closing pressure to said lid.
8. The combination with a journal'box having 0. lug provided with angularly dis posed bearing faces, of a lid hinged to said lug, a lid closing spring connected to said lid at one end and meanshinged to said lug and co-operating with the other end of said spring for maintaining said spring in operative engagement with said lug.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 20th day of November, 1923.
