DRAW-WORKS DRUM AND METHOD 'oF'Loc ING THE DRUMS-'ANDFLANGE j'sEoTIoNs manner; 7
Application filed October 1951927. Serial No; 22?;1365
This invention relates to drum constructions "for rotary drawworks and tothemethod of locking the drum and flangese'ctions there of, and is more particularly related to a drum formed of two half sections each including-a half of the drum formed integral with a flange and to the method of uniting or'looking the half sections together't-o form a substantially integral drawworks drum; In-the copendmg application of Edward Timbsy Serial No. 194,045, filed May 25,1927, is illustrated a two-piece drum for rotary draw-works 1ncluding two half sectionsunited at-the1rcenter to provide a substantially'integral drawworks drum, and this invention is directed to an improvement over the drum'construction shown in the said application ot'Edward Timbs and to the method of'locking-thesesed tions together to form the improved construction.
An object of this invention is-toprovide a two-piece drum construction'includlng-two hall sections which are'adapted to beunit'ed together at the center ofthe drumby means of a lock ring adaptedto fitover'the flanges formed on the half sections at their adjacent ends and the loekring being welded to the half sections on the surface ot the drum in order to provide a substantially integral drum.
Another object of this inventi on is -to provi de a method of unitingor locking the drum and flange sections of-a drum-adapted for use in a rotary drawworks which includes the locking of -a split'ring over annular flanges formed on the drum'sections,-and welding the locking ring to the drum sections at spaced apart annular welds.
Other objects and advantages of this 1nvention, it is believed, will be apparent from the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment thereof, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation in half vertical section of a drawworks drum embodying this invention.
Figure 2 is an end sectional ylew taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmental sectional view illustrating the manner of locking the drum and flange sections together by means of a split ring.
Ina-he construction of rotary drawworks drums such, for example," as are embodied in the drawworks employed in the operation of drill'ing -we-lls, it is essential that the drum and "flanges'of the drum beunited together 1nf1a manner to prevent spreading of the flanges-away'from the "drum and also that the-entire construction be rigid or fiianlytied together, as these drums must support weights eXtendingd-nto-"tons and must be operated to raise and lower these weights at a relatively fast rate in orderthat the drill stem or casingmay be quickly "removed -from the well Venti'on, illustrated in: the accompanyingdrawings, 1 and 2 indicate the half sections of the drum and are each otthe same constructi'ong and inc-ludehal-f drum sections 3 having integral flanges 4 at their opposed, ends; Formed integral with each of the sect-i onsl and Q -are hubs=5 by means of which the drum is supported upon the-shaft 6.; The drum formed may be either the-ty e which is secured to the shaft 6' by -means of'keys, ormay be of the type which is' rotatably mounted' upon the shaft and driven through a differential speed mechanism from the pro tit-ting sha-ft'-'6. The hubs *5 '0fthe sections 1 and 2 may be formed either exactly the same, as illustrated in the drawings, or the hub 5 on the right hand side of the drum, as illustrated in the drawings, may extend inwardly into the drum section in order to accommodate a clutch within the brake band which is secured to the flange 4:. Each of the sections land 2 is at its adjacent end formed with an inwardly extending. flange 7 which extends inwardly within the flange to a point to practically engage the shaft 6 but not providing a tight fit at this point to permit the drum section of the drawworks drum to yield somewhat at the center as the line is reeled thereon. The flanges 7 are provided with annular channels 8 and intermediate upwardly extending flanges-'9 at the inner edges of the channels 8. A split ring isprovided which ring10 and the flanges 9. At the other-points,
the split ring 10 does not engage the drum and flange sections 1 and 2 but is formed smaller than the channels provided intermediate the sections 1 and 2 on the outer surface.
The split ring 10 :may be secured to the sections 1 and 2 in any suitable or desirable manner but it is preferably united or locked to the sections 1 and 2 by welding the edges thereof, as illustrated at 18 and 19, at longitudinally spaced points on the drum construc; tion to the sections 1 and 2 atannularly extending welds formed entirely around the sections 1 and 2. Any suitable form of welded joint may be provided between the lock ring 10 and sections 1 and 2 such, for example, as is illustrated by merely cutting away the edge of the section 1 to form a triangular welded joint 20 or by cutting-away at an 1 angle the lock ring 10 and grooving out the section 2 to form an annular groove and a lock welded ring extending around the drum, as illustrated at 21.
The flanges 7 are provided with inwardly extending portions 22 at spaced intervals aroundtheir inner peripheries with inwardly projectingportions providing. the spaced means which practically engage, the shaft 6.
Having fully described our invention, it is to be understood that we do not wishto be limited to the details herein set forth, but our inventionis of the full scope of the appended claims. a 1
