Application filed January The present invention relates tov improve- .ments in time recorders-and is more particularly. directed to improvements in the two color ribbon mechanism of such recorders. The invention has among-its objects the provision of a ribbon shifting mechanism which is simple; durable. inexpensive to manufacture and which will not readily get out of order when in use. Other objects of the invention will appear as the invention is hereafter disclosed in the appended specification'and claims and shown in the drawings which by way of illustration show a preferred embodiment of the invention.
In the drawings Y Fig. '1 shows alfront view of a recorder equipped with my improvement.
Fig. 2 is a sideelevation of the same. Fig. 3is a plan view of the partsshown in 4:. t Fig. 4 is a detail view of the ribbon shifting controlling elements of the machine.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates diagrammatically the group of time type wheels'which are driven by the clock train in the usual manner. Also driven by the clock train, isa program disk 11 (Fig. 1) carrying the usual, adjustable camming projections 12. The program diskv is utilized to control two color. ribbon .mechanism in the following manner. Suitably pivoted at the top of the machine and cooperating with the camming lugs 12 is apivoted lever 13 having connected thereto a dependin.g l ink 14, which link at its lower end connectsftoale ver 15 pivoted at 16 (seeFigL' 2). A paw llis pivoted on the end of lever 15 and is normally urged in a clockwise direction by a spring 17.- The ;nose of the pawl 18 is bent over, as shown at 19, and this'portion is adapted to engage with a serrated disk 20. Upon the upward movement of link 14 the pawl end 19 passes out of a notch in disk 20 with which it had been in engagement and first rides over the right side of pin21 carried 'on' alocking "pawl 22 which is pivoted at 2%" After. passing above pin 21 the end 19 snaps across the top of the pin into contact with-the serrated disk. Immediately afterwardsj-link 14 drops suddenly and the pawl tip 19 cams locking pawl 22out of engagement with the serrated disk and thereafter the pawl drops into the next notch 20, 1925. Serial No. 3,574.
i and advances the serrated diskQO one notch. It. Wlll be understood that one step of movement is imparted to the serrated disk 20 each-i time a color change is to be elfe'ctedupon-the ribbon. Fixed to disk 20 to rotate in unison v therewith is a serrated cam or star ,wheel Cooperating with this cam there arefollow er pins 25 fast to a bell crank lever 26 pivot-.
ed at 27 and having an upwardly extending end 28 extending to and cooperating with the color flag ,visual indicator 29. Arm 2 8';also
carries a pin3O whichfits in a T-shapedjel ement 31. I This T- shaped element is provided" with twoshoulders32and 33 and is adapted .to be llfted upwardly. at each operation of the printing manual 34 by means of the linkage35Q36, 37 and 38. The two colonribbon 40 is carried on the usual spools 41' and. 42. Each spool is fixedly securedto shafts 43,
7 each of which shafts at its lowerend is provided with a flanged sleeve 44 'a dapted to receive lever arms 45. These lever arms 45, as
shown in Fig. 2, are fixed to a shaft 46, which shaft also has fixed thereto a pair of arms 47 n connecting with vertical rods 48 .which extend to and support a frame 49 which serves as a guide for theribbon adjacent theimpression point. t It will 'be understood. that if w shaft 46 is rocked clockwise the lower portiorf of the ribbon will be aligned withthe printing wheels and if the shaft 46 remains in the position shownin FigfQ the upper portion of the ribbon will. effect the imprint The ".-i!v.- I arrangement descr1bed prov des means for f'not only elevating the ribbon 'spobl's but. also elevating or loweringthe ribbon' giiidel In order to effect the rocking movement ofshaft ber 37 and part 38 anticlockwise. This movement elevates the slotted member 31. Although this member 31 moves in a substantially vertical path that path varies in detail according to the position of pin 30, which position is in turn determined by the position 90 746 an arm 50 is provided which is fastto the printing. handle deof bell crank 28. In the position inFig. 2 shoulder 32 on member. 31 will on every up stroke engage the pin 54 on walking beam 52 thereby rocking the walking beam clockwise and drawing up on link 51 thus elevating the ribbon as previously described. v
The ribbon may or may not remain 1n 11 per position after a recording operation. IF it remains in upper position and if member 31 is shifted to the right prior to the next recording operation the member 31 u on the next rising stroke will have its shou der 33 engage pin 55 thus rocking walking beam 52 anticlockwise and causing a lowering of the ribbon. It will be understood that if member 31 is shifted to left hand position shoulder 33 will clear pin 55 upon the rising of member 31. Also if member 31 is in the right hand position pin 54 will clear shoulder 32.
Fig. 4 shows the parts in the position which they assume after a recording operation on the lower section of the ribbon but before part 31 has been raised upon a subsequent printing operation to reshift the ribbon back to lower position. It will be understood that the subsequent operation of the printing manual with the parts in the position shown in Fig. 4 will cause a printing on the upper section of the ribbon.
The arrangement described provides means for setting or controlling the position of the combined actuating and controlling member 31 in such a way that after it is set it is locked in position. and only released at a time of a new setting. All ribbon shifting movements are positive in their nature and the use of gravity or springs for this purpose is obviated. Furthermore, if the ribbon is to remain in one position, this may occur without the necessity of the member 31 being again required to rock the walking beam or element 52 and reshift the ribbon shifting mechanism.
What I claim is 1. In a time recorder, in combination with a controlling member for controlling ribbon shifting operations, means for controllin the position of said member, said means inc uding a time driven program wheel, a notched disk intermittently advanced under control of said program wheel, a star wheel rotatable with said notched disk, a follower cooperating with said star wheel and connections therefrom for controlling the position of the controlling member, and means for positively locking said notched disk and said cooperat sesame ing star wheel against advance, or retraction after each advance thereof.
2. In combination with a controlling member for predetermining ribbon shifting operations in a time recorder having a multicolor ribbon mechanism, means for setting said member, comprising a time driven program wheel, an assembly comprising a notched wheel and a cam wheel mounted to rotate in unison, a pawl controlled by the program wheel for engaging said notched wheel and advancing the said assembly step by step, a locking pawl coacting with said notched wheel for positively locking said assembliy against advance or retraction after each a vance thereof, and a follower device cooperating with said cam wheel and connected to the controlling member for setting the same.
3. The invention set forth in claim 2 in which means is provided for unlocking the looking pawl prior to each step of advance of the assembly.
4. In a time recorder, incombination with a controlling member for controlling ribbon shifting operations, means for controlling the position of said member, said means including a time driven program wheel, a disc having rectangular slots in its periphery and intermittently advanced under control of said program wheel, a starwheel rotatable with said disc, afollower cooperating with said star wheel and connections therefrom for controlling the position of the controlling member and a latching pawl mounted on a fixed pivot and cooperating with the rectangular slots in the disc for positively locking said disc and said star wheel against movement in either direction in the absence of an advancing operation under control of the program wheel.
5. In a time recorder, in combination with a controlling member for controlling ribbon shifting operations, a time-driven program wheel, a disc with straight-sided notches in its periphery, a driving pawl controlled by the program wheel for engaging said notches to drive the disc, a locking pawl for engaging said notches to lock the disc against rotation in either direction, means whereby retraction of said driving pawl from said notches forces said locking pawl into firm engagement with said notches, and means actuated by said disc Ii?)or controlling said ribbon controlling mem- In testimony whereof I hereto afiix my signature.
