This invention relates to drill boxings particularly adapted for coal drills, and one object in view isto improve devices of this class by providingremovable screw-threadedlinings for. the casing sections having securing meansprimarily of separate structure and inserted through the said casing sections andilinings, and whereby the line ingsmay have acontinued use in the event the securing means becomes broken or sheared, with material economy in screwthreaded liningconstruction in connection with drill boxings and other analogous de vices.
A further object of the invention is to provide structuralmeans in connection with the casing sections-and linings of a drill boxing-toreduce thedisadvantageous action of thrust on the linings-to a minimum and ma teri-ally lessen the strain on the fastening means for the linings.
A-.further object of 'the invention is to provide a. drill boxing having hinged sections with removable screw-threaded linings mounted in the sections,- and also to include inter engag-ing structural features and re.-
movable'fasteningdevices for the linings to permit a close association of the sections and linings when in normal position forthe etfective operation of the feed screw to take up and compensate for the thrust of said screw as well as strain on. the fastening means for the linings.
With the foregoing and other objects and advantagesin-view, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several-partswhich-will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

The numerals 5 and 6 designate casing sections having a lower hinged joint con: nection 7 and an'upper releasable locking means comprising a disk-like member 8 having an apertured handle extension 9 and a clearance slot or recess 10 adjacent said extension, the disk;8 being rota-tably held on the upper flattened extremity 11 of the. casing section 5 by. a screw 12 rising from said extremity and engaged by a nut 13, which bears on the top of'fthe disk.v The disk also has an opening 9 therethrough around the screw 12 for the purpose of clearance. The upper extremity of the op- 7;; posite casing section 6vhas a projection 1 k which is engagedby the disk flange 15 when the saiddiskvisturned or. rotated'a-certain distance, and when the projection l tncomes opposite the slot, or recess 10, the casing sections 5 and'6'are released and may be readily openedvto. gainaccess to the interiorthereof. Thislocking meansis well known as well as the hinge connectionfor- thecasin sections 5 and 6. The-casing sections .5 and 8 6 at diametrically opposite points areformed with outer bosses 16 and 17 which are each formed with an outer flathearin face 18, and through the center-of each,o these bosses is also formed .anopening. 19. The openings 19 through the bosses 16 and 17, we communicate with central. seat s22 of the form shown particularly byFigZ andzcomprising cylindrical portions 23 continuing into outer frusto-eonical reduced portions 24 Theinner concave sides 20 of the 106 casing sections 5 and 6; have linings 24: and; 25 removablymounted; therein and formed with inner, screw-threads 26 extending the full? length thereof, the outer sides of the. linings having ribs 27. formed nu as a part thereof to engage the end and intermediate ribs 21 of the casing sections and 6, as shown by Figs. 3 and 4, and fascilitate accurate application and also removal of each lining from its casing sec tion, and further, provide for reduction in cost of manufacture, as the cooperating ribs of the linings and sections are much easier machined than it the entire surfaces of the said linings and ribs had to be machined. In Fig. 3 the section 6 is fully open and shown in a horizontal position with the screw-threaded lining in full plan view and the opposite section 5 standing upright in a plane at right angles to the section 6 and having the upper portion broken away, the screw-threaded projection 36 being the only portion of the lining 24 of the section 5 exposed by the recess 33 of the section 5. The object of Fig. 3 is to show the relative positions of the projection 36 having the screw-threaded surface opposite the lower recess and whereby the screw-threaded linings at the bottom portions of the sections are brought in close relation and at the same time prevented from shifting or are reinforced against the thrust strain of the feed screw or thread bar which engages the said linings. Each of the linings 24 and 25 has a central outwardly projecting tubular boss 28 of the same contour as the seat 22 in which these tubular bosses are snugly fitted, to provide countersinks 29' for the heads 30 of removable securing bolts 31 of the usual type known as plow bolts and having outer screw-threaded extremities projecting through the openings 19 to receive removable securing nuts 32. The heads 30 of the bolts just specified are located outwardly a distance from the threads 26 formed on the inner sides of the linings 24 and 25 and do not interfere with the functions of the said screw threads. By providing the tubular bosses 29 as a part of the central structure of each of the linings and snugly fitting them in the seats 22 of similar shape and formed in the sections 5 and 6, effects an anti-thrust organization and very materially reduces and in fact entirely eliminates shearing and other breaking stresses from the bolts serving as the securing means at the centers of the linings with respect to the casing sections. The one lining 24 is notched or recessed at the center of its upper edge, as at 33, and the central portion of the upper edge of the remaining lining 25 has a correspondingly shaped projecting lip 34, to snuglyv fit in the said notched or recessed portion of the similar edge of the companion lining, and at the bottom this structure is reversed, the lower edge of the lining 25 at the center being notched or recessed as at 35, to receive a central lip or projection 36 at the lower edge "of the companion lining 24-.
Then the linings or halves of the screw elements are closed with the casing sections 5 and 6 and the latter sections locked, the notched or recessed and lipped construction just described prevents end motion of the linings. The casing section 5 carries the usual trunnions 37 atone extremity and serves as tne body member of the casing, the opposite or companion casing section 6 being the lid or cover member. boxing structure the section or half 5 of the casing carrying the trunnions always wears out much faster than the opposite section 6, this being due to the fact that the section or lid member 6 fails to fit properly at the hinge joint, and owing to this structural association the said lid section is permitted to slip back and does not take its share of the thrust of the feed screw or thread bar which will be presently described.
Depending from the extremity of the body section 5 of the casing opposite that having the trunnions 37 is a bearing stud 38 on which is mounted a beveled driving pinion 39, the latter pinion being free to rotate on the said stud and having an angu lar faced collar 40, by means of which it may be suitably driven. Adjacent to the beveled pinion 39 is'a gear cage 41, into which extends a bevel gear 42, held in mesh with the said pinion 39 and provided with a sleeve 43 having inner splines of a suitable character indicated by dotted lines as at 44, Fig. 1, to engage the opposite slots or grooves 45 extending longitudinally of the feed screw or thread bar 46, which also projects through and cooperates with the inner threads 26 of the linings 24 and 25. This feed screw or thread bar is equipped at one end with a drilling tool attaching extremity 47, and as will be readily understood the said feed screw or thread bar 46 is moved gradually outward from the boxing so as to effect a penetration of the drill tool into the coal or other material operated upon when the intermeshing gearing is actuated. To maintain acontinual and effective mesh of the bevel gear 42 and pinion 39, the gear cage 41 carries a horizontally disposed roller 48, which bears against the outer side of the gear 42 and at all times forces the latter inwardly towards the pinion 39, or said roller takes the thrust of the gear 42 and materially reduces the friction.
In assembling the linings 24 and 25 in the casing sections 5 and 6, they are first placed so that the ribs 27 of the said linings will engage the ribs 21 of the sections, and when thus adjusted the tubular bosses 28 will be applied in and snugly engage the seats 22, and the mounting of the said linings is completed by inserting the bolts comprising the heads 30 and shanks 31 in the countersinks 29 with the said heads dis- In. the ordinary lit) posed closely in the outer portions of the countersinks and the screw-threaded shanks projected through the openings 19. The securement of the linings is completed by applying the nuts 32 to the outer projecting extremities of the screw-threaded shanks 3i of the fastening bolts and the linings are thus reliably held within the sections 5 and 6. \Vhen the sections 5 and 6 are closed, the alternately positioned lips or projections 34 and 36 and recesses 33 and 35 will become engaged and together with the seats :22 and tubular bosses 28 titted therein the linings will be held against longitudinal movement or thrust motion due to the operation of the feed screw or thread bar 46, with material advantages in displacement and reduction of wear of the linings. In the event the fastening means for the linings, consisting of the headed bolts and screw-threaded stems as above noted, or what is known as the usual form of plow bolt, become sheared or otherwise impaired, they may be removed and replaced by similar devices without requiring the replacement of the linings with which they coact as a securing means. This latter feature is also of material advantage in that in boxing structures as heretofore produced, Where the fastening means was formed as an integral part of the screwthreaded linings, breakage of these integral fastening means required replacement of the lining section forming part of said integral fastening means, with increased repair expense or cost of upkeep.
The improved boxing hereinbefore de scribed has therefore been devised to minimize thrust displacement of the screwthreaded linings and repair costin the event of breakage or injury to the fastening de vices for such linings, and thereby generally benefit the complete boxing structure.
\Vhat is claimed as new is:
1. In a drill boxing of the class specified, the combination with hinged casing sections, of linings having inner screw-threaded sides disposed within the casing sections, and removable fastening means inserted through the centers of the linings and easing sections, the outer sides of the linings and the inner portions of the casing sections having interfitting structural features through which the fastening means extend to prevent longitudinal shifting movement of the linings relatively to the casing sections.
2. In a drill boxing of the class specified, the combination of hinged casing sections, linings titted in the inner sides of the said sections, the linings and sections respectively having seats and projecting bosses in interfitting relation, and headed bolts passed through the centers of the linings and the said bosses and seats and having the heads thereof countersunk in the linings, the inner sides of the linings being screw-threaded and the heads of the bolts depressed by their countersunk association with relation to the threads of the linings.
3. In a drill boxing of the class specified, the combination of hinged casing sections having intermediate and end ribs extending transversely over the inner sides thereof. and removable linings having inner screw-till'eadcd sides and provided at their outer portions with transversely extending ribs to bear on the ribs of the casing sections, the ribs of the casing sections and linings being machined to accurately engage one with the other.
4. In a drill boxing of the class specified, the coinbiziiation of hinged casing sections having inner concave sides, concavo-convex linings applied to the inner concave sides of the sections and having inner screw-threaded surfaces, the linings being formed with reversely arranged projections and recesses to interlock at the central portions of the linings to prevent longitudinal thrust movement of said linings, the outer central portions of the linings and inner similar portions of the sections being respectively formed with projecting bosses and seats to receive said bosses, and removable headed fastening means inserted through the bosses and seats and having the heads thereof countersunk at the inner portions of the linings at a distance from the threads of said linings.
