IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF MAIL-BAGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,425, dated October 5, 1875; application filed August 14, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY STEPHENS, of Brooklyn, E. 1)., Kings county, New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Making Mail-Bags, of which the following is a specification:
This invention is an improved method of attaching a shield to the lower portion of the bag, to protect the stitches of the seam by which the bottom is sewed on from wear.
Figure 1 is a section showing the first operation. Fig. 2 is a section showing the second. Fig. 3 is a section showing the third, and Fig. 4 is a section of the complete bag.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the cylinder or tube of the bag; B, the leather bottom; 0, the shield by which the seam 1), by which the bottom is attached to the tube, is to be protected from the wear it is subject to by the common habit of dragging the bag along the ground.
In the first place, the shield is sewed onto the outside of the bag by the seam E, as represented in Fig. 1. The bag is then turned outside in, and the shield O is folded down, as
represented in Fig. 2. The leather bottom B is then inserted bottom side up, and sewed on by the seam F, the lower portion of the tube A being turned up out of the way. Then the tube is turned down, and the canvas bottom G is sewed in by the seam H, after which the bag is turned right side out again, which brings the parts in the position represented in Fig. 4, with the seams D and E concealed and protected. The additional seams J may then be made or not, as preferred.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The method of bottoming mail-bags, consisting in first sewing the shield O to the outside with a seam, E, next turning the bag inside out and folding the shield down, then sewing in the leather bottom with seam F, and finally sewing in the canvas bottom by a seam, H, as and for the purpose described.
