This invention relates to latches 'for ve hicle doors, and its object is to provide novel y means for securing the latclrbolt inl the thrown position so that the door cannot be opened from the outside until the bolt-holding means `has been released.' The invention also seeks to simplify the construction and thereby reduce the cost of production.' These stated objects and other objects which will 1ncidentally appear in the Course of the following description are attained in such a device as is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and the invention consists in certain novel `features which will be particularly l5 pointed outfin the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an inside face view of a door latch embodying'the invensition; l l 30 Figure 2 is a similar View with the parts arranged* to permitretraction ofthe bolt;y
Figure 3 is a vertical-section oit theupper portion of the vertical spindle;
Figure 4 is a horiz'ontalfsection on the line 44 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a horizontal section on 'the line 5-5 of Figure 1;

f Figures 7, 8 and 9 are detail views showing different forms of detents which may be employed;
Figure 10 is a horizontal section on the line 10 10 of Figure 6. Y
ln carrying out the invention, I employ the usual case plate 1, on which is mounted the latch-bolt 2 having its nose 3 projecting through the flange 4 of the case plate. -A lon- 40 gitudinal .slot 5 isformed in the bolt near the inner end thereof and on its upper edge is a projection 6 arranged to beengaged bythe roll back 7 which is turned in the usual manner by a knob spindle and a handle (not shown) on the outer side of the door. Rotatably mounted on the case plate is a vertical spindle 8 which projects up through the edge of the door panel, and formed on or securedv rigidlyto this spindle near its lower end is a cam 9 which is'arranged to play in the slot in the bolt. Preferably, a lug 10 is formed on the bolt at the rear end of the slot-,to cooperate with the cam 9 and insure retractionof the bolt when the spindle is rotated vin the proper direction. To rotate the spindle, a handle 11 tion, the bolt being Secured in the thrown po-k is provided at` the upper end thereof, ysaid handle having a hub 12 threaded on the spin-` dle, and a collar 12' is located below the hub 12 and receives'the upper end portion oit 'a tube or sleeve 12b located on the spindle, said collar and tube. or sleeve being secured'to the spindle 8 by a cross pin .13.V A longitudinal groove or channel 14 is formed in the upper portion of the spindle 8 and opens through the top end of the spind-le'with its lower end at a point just below the top edge ofthe door panel. Slidably mounted in the channel 14 Vis arod 15 having at its lower end a laterally projecting stud 16which passes through a slot 16n at the lowerend of the vtube or sleeve 12b. The upper end of the rod is equipped with a button 17 litting slidably through the ripper end of a thimble 18 which enters the hub 12 and is threaded onto the upperend of the spindle within. thehub 12'.` Pivotally mounted on the case plate adjacent the upper edge thereof and between the spindle and the flange 4 is an angle lever 19 Ahaving one arm projecting past and in proximity to theverf tical spindle, the other arm vot' the lever eX- tending obliquely downwardly and terminating in a forli 20.beneath the upper arm. The tiret-mentioned arm of the. lever is formed kwith a cam slotk 21 near its free inner end which is engaged by the stud 16, and at .its end the lever arm is constructed to be engaged b theupper free endet' a spring detent 23 which .is secured upon the case plate below the lever arm. Pivotally mounted upon the case plate i at a point between the roll-back and the op-k erating angle lever 19 is a. locking lever or dog 24 having one end litted in the fork 20 with a rolling sliding engagement and its opposite end arranged to abut the roll-back and thereby prevent movement ot the same.
Normally, the parts 'are in the positions shown in Fig. 2 and the bolt 2 may be retracted by manipulation of the outside knob or the spindle 8, the detent 23 holding the dog 24 and its setting lever 19 in the positions shown.` The rod 15 at this time slides freely in the` groove 13, as the spindle is turned, by reason of the engagement of the stud 16 with the obliquely disposed walls of the slot 21 and-the lever 19 and dog 24 remain atrest. If the door is to be locked against outsidev opening, pressure is exerted on thebutton or cap 17 to push the rod ldownward andthis action rocks the'lever 19 into the position shown in Fig. 1, inasmuch as the stud 16 is at the higher end of the slot 21 and the spindle S is at this time held against turning. The dog E24 is, consequently, swung against the rollback 7 and the knob spindle rendered inoperative. New, when the occupant ofthe car desires to permit the door to be opened from thc outside, he merely turns the handle" bolt,.1the -pinl riding through the slot while the lever 19V is held bythe detent 23.
In Figures 1 and 7the'detent rlisshown as having its free lend formed into a trans verse tooth or ridge 22 adapted to engage.`
either one of two grooves or recesses 25 in the -side of the lever to thereby `yieldably Y hold the lever set. In Figures 6 and 8, the
free, end `of the detent 25a is fiat and hears upon la ball orroller 26 fitted Within un opening inthe endof the lever Q7 `to ride on the Case plate 10D as thele'ver rocks and engage one or another pocket 28 in the case plate. In Figure 9, the lever29 hasa seat for Vthe ball 30 which does not ride onl the case plate Y but rides between the'pockets 310,11 the detent y 32, and` engages eitherwof said pockets.` In
all three forms, thedeten't operates automatically to hold the operatingV lever against accidental movement.
My lock isV simple, inexpensive and efli. cient. It willbe understoodthat the lock thus described is intendedmore particularly for` closed cars in which one door is keycontrolled. and the other doors arev locked from the inside. j It is, of course, 'desirable to provide the lock on one door in such form that it may be unlocked from the outside, and a forman`` swering this requirement is illustrated in Figf ure 6 which also shows some structural refinement. In this form of the invent-ion, tongues are struck up'l'roinA the case late 100 and rolled toward each other to orm bearings S33-for the vertical spindle. The flange 101 of the` case plate has a lip 102 struck therefrom to aid'in supporting'and guiding the bolt 34 and the latter is actuated yin one direction by a cam 35 on vthe vertical spindle 8. A
volute spring 37 issecuredat its inner endv to a stud on` the case plate Aand hasits opposite free` end bearing against the inner end ofthe bolt, tending constantly to project vthe same, and it is to beV understood that in actual factice` an equivalent spring acts upon the oltv 2; The operating vlever 47 is operatively connected With the spindle 36 .7 and 6 respectivelyin This movement causes the stud 1Gv `in the same manner as the lever 19 ia con'- nected with the spindle 8 and controlled by apush button 370 at the top ofthe spindle, and the roll back 38 and horn orprojection 39 are essentially the sameas the elements the first-described lock. Instead of the bent locking lever, ,QL-however, there `isprovided a substantiallytriangular locking plate 4()v pivoted upon the case plate ata point .ncanthe spindle and, provided on its side withda stud l1 en gaged bythe fork 42 of thelever 47. forward edgeof thelockin plate is properly shaped to abut'` the roll ack immediately over the horn 39 ywhenroclred by the operat-` ing lever, and it isfurther'provided with a notch 43 receiving aglug or cam 44 of a cylinder lock Vindicated, conventionally at, 45. 2. In a door latch, the combination of a latch-bolt, a vertical spindle for moving the bolt, a roll-back by which the bolt may be Y moved, a locking element arranged to abut the roll-back and prevent movement thereof, an` operating lever engaged at one end with the locking element and having a cam yslot near its oppositeend', and ast-ud .slidably mounted` on the spindle and engaged in the cam slot whereb to set the lever.
