of a plurality of leaves assembled in book form and each, having one face marked to indicate the date and its other page provided with an advertislng legend or the like so that when the book is open and the pages successively moved to disclose the proper datethere will always be disclosed two pages, one having the date marked thereon and the other disclosing advertising matter.
Another object of the invention is to provide improved means for retaining the book of datesheets open at the proper place.
Another object of the invention is to providev an improved type of frame for the calendar including channels in which strips having month and day markings thereon are movably mountedand disclosed. through openings formed in a facing sheet mounted upon the frame and carrying the date pad.
Another object of the invention is to permit the month and day strips to be wound upon rollers disposed transversely in the channels of the frame and cause them to be unwound by the action of weights carried by the strips when the rollers are rotated in the proper direction. 1 F
Another object of the invention is to yleldably prevent the rollers from being rotated in an unwinding direction. v
The invention is illustrated in the. accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a View showing the improved calendar in front elevation;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the calendar;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section View through the calendar taken on theline 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a .view of a date pador book of the type intended for use in a real estate ofiice, and i Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view showing one of the spring pa-wls constituting part of the invention.
The frame forming part ofthe calendar is preferably formed of wood and includes inner and outer longitudinally extending strips 1. and 2 having their upper ends suitably secured to transversely extending end strips 3 and 4. Corner braces 5 are provided to strengthen the frame and hold it in proper shape, bar 6 which extends between the inner side strips to bracetheframe intermediate its depth. 'This frame carries a facing sheet 7 which is preferably formed of cardboard, although shcet metal, leather or anv other suitable composition may be employed.
v The date pad which is indicated in general by the ninneral 8 consists of a suitable numberof leaves held together "in book form by paper fasteners orthe likef) which are passed through the leaves at the center of the book and through the facing sheet with their end portions clinched against therear face of the facing sheet, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. By referring to Fig. 1, it will be seen that each sheet hasa numeral 10 printed thereon to indicate the day of a month and may also have an advertising slogan 11 printed'thereon.
Upon theother face of each sheet may be printed an advertising slogan, as shown at 12, or if the calendar is for use by a real estate firm or the like, a picture 13 of a house may be secured to the second-mentioned face of each sheet of the date book by stickers 14:. These stickers M are disposed at the corners of the picture and are formed with tongues 15 which overlap the outer face of the picture and with a diagonally extending strip 16 beneath which the extreme corner portions of the picture are passed. The under faces There has also been provided a cross of the stickers are gummed so that they will firmly adhere to the leaves ofthe date book. If desired, the pages of the book may contain illustrations of a manufacturing plant and appropriate descriptive matter or advertising slogans intended to induce purchases from the company distributing the calendars. ClipslTare carried by the facing sheet 7 above and below the date hook to engage the leaves in order to retain the book open with a desired date exposed to view and prevent the pages from becoming curled or torn by wind. Each of the clips is formed from' a strand of resilient. wire bentto provide a cross bar having a 1iftinglip'18 intermediate its length channels and side arms .19 having eyes at their ends through which are passed securing bolts 20. The bolts 20 pass through the facingsheet and through end portions of metal strips 21 which serve to reinforce the facing sheet and prevent danger of the bolts being worked through the facing sheet ifv formed of paper or the like. A sheet 22 having the name of the bank or other business house using t-he calendar is pasted or otherwise secured against the upper portion of the outer face of the facing sheet.
The" moiitli and day of the week are inclicated by strips 23 which are disposed in channels defined by the inner and outer strips arid-2 of the frame and have the names of the months printed upon them, as shown at 24 and 25 in Fig; 1, which are viewed through sight openings 26 and 27 formed in the facing sheet and communicating with the 7 These strips 23 are wound upon rollers 28" and each roller is provided with a pin or axle 29 journaled in the strips 1 and 2 and havi-n'g one end portion projecting outwardly and carrying a turning head 30. The peripheral edge face of the turning head is serrated so that it may be easily grasped in order'to' rotate the roller and also in order to provide ratchet teeth engaged by apawl 31 which serves to yielclably resist turning of the head. By referring to Fig. 5, it will be seen that each pawl consists of a strand of resilient wire folded back upon itself and having its ends twisted together and bent about a securing screw 31". A guide strip 32 which may be formed of cardboard or sheet metal extends across each channelopposite the sight opening communicating therewith and is provided with end flanges 33 secured against the side strips 1- and 2. By an inspection of Figs. 2 and 3, it will be seen that the strip 23 is pas's'edbetween the guide strip 32 and facing sheet and, therefore, will. be held close to the opening so that the name of the month or day may be easily read through the opening. It should also be noted that each strip 23 carries a weight 34 at its lower free end so that" when the roller is rotated in an unwinding direct-ion the weight will move the strip dowi'iwardly through the channel until the strip is unwound aindthe weight rests upon the bottom of the channel. The weight will also serve to hold the strip taut and prevent it from winding unevenly upon the roller. A guide strip 35 which is curved transversely, as shown in Fig. 3 extends between the strips 1 and in shielding relation to the roller and prevents the cover sheet or backing sheet 36 carried by the strips 1 and 2 from bearing against the roller and preventingit from rotating easily.
lVhen the calenda'ris use, a sheet 22 bearing the name of the bank, real estate office or other business house is applied to the upper portion of the outer face of the facing sheet and the calendar may be suspended from a nail or other suitable support by means of the hanger 37 or may be supported in an upright position inany other desired manner. The strips 23 are adjusted to display the name of the month and day of the week tliniough the openings 26 and 27 and the book of date leaves is opened to display the sheet bearing the numeral indicating the proper day of the month, Each day one of the date leaves is released from the lower clip 17 and moved upwardly into engagement with the upper clip and the roller carrying the strip having the names of the days printed thereon rotated to move the strip upwardly and display the proper day through the opening 26. Of course, at the firstof each month the roller carrying the strip having the names of the months printedthereon must be rotated to draw its strip upwardly and display the proper month through the opening 27. It will thi i's be seen that the calendar is of the everlasting type and may be used fronr one year to another. At any time desired the book of date sheets may be removed'by releasing the paper fasteners and a: newone substituted In order to unwind the strips 2 23 it is merely iiecessarytoflex the pawls 31 out of engagementwith the ratchet wheels-'30 and the weights will move downwardlyuntil they rest upon the bottoms of the channels.
This will of course, cause the strips to be unwound from their rollers. v
Having thus described the invention, I claim:

A calendar comprising a frame includin-g strips defining a vertically extending channel havingside walls and upper and lower end walls, a facing sheet carried by said frame and having an opening communicating with said channel, a roller extending transversely in said channel and having a stem journaled in the side walls and projecting from one side of the frame, a turning head carried by said stemya pawl carriedby said frame and engaglng' said head to yle'ldably resist turning of said roller, a ribbon wound upon said roller a'nd having characters. thereon displayed through the opening in said facing, a weight for the free end of said ribbon, and a guide for said ribbon extending behind the same in the channel inv crossed relation to saidopeningz.
