Application led February 11, 1926. `Serial No. 87,656.
My invention relates broadly to separating or classifying machines for grading material into selected sizes and inoi'e particularly tov a construction of classifying machine employ-k ing roller meinbei's having wear resisting sur faces constructed for operation with matei'ial of differing characteristics.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a separating machine havinfi' a plus rality of longitudinally extending spaced. i'ollei' members which ai'e provided with wear resisting surfaces for preventing Wearingl of the rollers under vthe Icontinued abrasive action of the material which is passed over the rollers.
Another object of my invention is to provide a construction of separating machine in whichv a plui'ality of longitudinally extend ing rollers are provided and sections of weer resisting material secured over the rollers along vthe length thereof for preventing excessive wear and the destruction of individual i'ollers'throughI long and continued use of the separating machine. s Y
Still. another ob 'ect of my invention is to provide a construction of separating or classiHV f flying machine where a plurality of adjustably spaced apart rollers areprovided With renewable surface members which maybe removedor placed uponthe rollers from timeto time for preserving the efficient operation of the machine.
A further obj ectA of my invention is to pro- `vide a construction of rollermember for sepa-l rating or classifying rmachines in which a wear resisting envelope may be readilyinserted over the roller member for protecting the roller member against wear and enabling the surface of the rollermember to be i'enewed from time to time to avoid the necessity of replacing an entire roller member which normally becomes necessary after extended use of the separating machine.
My invention will be moi'e clearly understood from the following specification by ref-v ei'ence t-o the' accompanying' drawings, wherein :v
tudinal crosssectional' view taken on line 2 2 of the separating or yclassifying machine illustrated in Figfl; Fig'. 3 is a lateral crosssectional view taken along' linei-S of the vFigure l is a plan viewillustrating thel construction of the separating or classifying machine of myinvention; Fig. 2 is a longi separating machine as illustrated in Fig. 2;
Fig 4 is a detail fragmentary view partially in cross-section through one of the longitudinal roller'members illustrating onemethod of lsecuring the wear resisting enevelope over v the surface of the rollers; Fig. 5 is a cross# sectional view of the roller construction'illus trated in Fig. 4 taken on line 5 5 thereof;
Fig. 6 is a view of one of trie rollers partially broken away and in section illustrating ay modified construction by ywhich the Wear resisting envelope may 'be secured over the roller member; and Fig, 7 is a cross-sectional View through the roller member of 6 taken on line 7,--7 thereof.
I have found that-the usual steel rollersiof Y a separating or classifying machine, after vhaving once been set in spaced relationship tend to wear away under. the continued abra,- sive actionof the material passing through the coal separator and ultimately it becomes necessary to replace an entire roller. These replacements are yinherently expensive and inconvenient and Where spares are not immediately available, result in undersired shut.' down of the machinery 'with resulting over,- head expense. By my-invention, I proyide a plurality of removable sections which form envelopes for thel rollers ofthe classifying ci'uing in the operation of the machine by rea son of the yieldable characteristics ofthe inavteri'al,` permitting passage .of slightly ovei'- Asize particles of the substance which is being operated upon-by the classifying machine.
Referring to the drawings in more detail. reference character 1 ydesignatesaI ,pa-ir of side frames which havesecured thereto, adjacent their extreinities, front bearing carrier 2 and rear bearing carrier 3 by any suit,-
ablemeans such as bolts 4. The frame isprovided at the front bearing lcarrier 2 with an extension 5 for housing the dust and dirt proof shaft member 6 journaled in bearings carried bythe frame of the classifying machine. The shaft member 6 is driven by a belt 8 which passes over the pulley 7 or any other suitable driving source may be provided where it may be more expedient. The shaft member 6 within the gear case housing 5 carries bevel gears 9 keyed thereonwhich mesh with bevel gears 10 on the extremities of rotatable'shaft members 11. The rotatable shaft members 11 are'journaled in bearings 12 in the front bearing carrier 2 and in bear-v ings 13 in the rear bearing carrier 3. The shaftniembers 11 are provided with roughened or irregular shaped surfaces or with projections 14: extending therefrom in different directions along the length thereof. These projections 14 engage the inner surfaces of the sectional sleeve members 15 which form the longitudinally extending` rollers 16. The rollers 16 are spaced apart throughout their length for distances determined by the setting of thesets of adjustable bearings 12 and 13 in the front bearing carrier f2 and the i'eaiI bearing carrier 3, in accordance with the desired grading or size of the material which is operated upon by the classifying machine. A hopper is provided over the rollers 16 by means of side plates 18 and the chute 17.l
The lrollers ai'e normally positioned in .an inclined plane so that material which is distributed ovei the rollers tends to travel' agitation and lrota-tive movement thereof;
In order to secure the wear resisting surface sections 15 on the longitudinally extending shaft members 11 various forms of retaining mea-ns may be provided between the shaft members and the rollers.v In Fig. 4, I have shown a modified form of section for one of the shaft members,` where a. polygonal cross-section QOis provided with surfaces 21 which lock with correspondingly shaped inner surfaces of the wear resisting envelope 22. In Fig. 6 I have illustrated another method of constructing the longitudinally extending rollers where the shaft 28 is screw threaded adjacent its opposite ends and provided with a square cross-section 25 intermediate the screw vthreaded portionsV square sleeve'me-mber 26 fits over the square shaft member 25 and carries the wear resisting material 27 which -is securely locked upon the shaft member by means of nut and washer members 29 and, 30 engaging the screw threaded portions of the shaftQS.
It will be observed that white iron coverings for the rollers may be readily placed upon or removedy from the rotatable shaft members by merely removing one of the shaft members from its bearings. Sections of the lustrated in the drawings has been found to be veryl practical in the separating of coal into selected sizes. I/Vhile the apparatus as shown has lbeen particularly designed for use as a coal separator it will be Lunderstood that the machine may be applied to the separation of various materials wherever it is necessary to selectively grade' material into different sizes.
I have illustrated certain preferred ein bodiment-s of the inventiombut I desire that it be understood that modifications mav be made and that no limitations upon the invention are intended other than those imposed by the scope of the appended claims..
