UNITED STATES ORVILLE E. ABBEY,
or connme, Iowa;
AUTOMOBILE LICENSE-CERTIFICATE HOLDER.
Application filed July 20,
This invention relates to a device for holding automobile license certificates, which are required by certain States to be carried 1n the vehicle.
6 The primary object of the present invention is to provide a holder of the above kind which is simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture, and which may be conveniently mounted on the vehicle without marring or damaging the body of the latter.
A further object is to provide a holder of the above kind including a container for the license certificate, and suspension means for the container which may be conveniently connected to the vehicle without marring or damaging the'latter, the container being detachably connected with the suspension means so that the container can be conveniently removed from and connected to the suspension means when occasion so requires.
Other objects will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood. and the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the ac companyin drawing and claimed.
In the c rawing, wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of an automobile license certificate holder constructed in accordance with the present invention; v
Figure 2 is a rear elevational view thereof;
Figure 3 is an enlarged horizontal section on line 3-3 of Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is an enlarged vertical section on line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the present license certificate holder includes a container in the nature of a card case or envelope and having a body portion formed from an elongated rectangular sheet of fiexible material such as cloth or leather, said sheet being folded intermediate its ends as at 5 upon a transverse vertical fold line to provide similar front and back walls 6 and 7 which are suitably secured together along their upper and lower edges by stitching or the like as at 8. A flexible non-metallic card case is thus formed closed at one end at the fold 5 and open at the opposite end for the ready insertion and removal of the license certificate 9. The front wall 6 of the container or card case is rovided nearer the lower edge thereof witli a relatively large 1927. Serial No. 207,298.
rectangular opening as at 10 which is covered by a transparent sheet 11 of celluloid or the like that is disposed at the inner side of the front wall 6 and has its margin secured to the latter about the opening 10, by means of adhesive or the like. In this way, a display window is provided through which the printed matter on the license certificate card may be readily seen or read. A rectangular stiffening and reinforcing sheet 12, of pasteboard or the like, is applied and secured to the inner face of the back wall 7 by means of adhesive or the like, said stiffening and reinforcing sheet being of approximately the same size as the back wall 7 as clearly shown in Figures 3 and 4.
A pair of spaced horizontally aligned and inverted key-hole slots 13 are provided in the upper portion of the back Wall 7 and its stiffenlng and reinforcing sheet 12, and the enlarged lower ends of these key-hole-slots 13 are preferably of rectangular form as shown. The suspension means consists of a plurality of similar vacuum cups which form what may be termed suction attaching elements, and each of said cups consists of a hollow semi-spherical body portion 14 formed on its outer side with a square neck 15 which terminates in a square head 16 of greater area than the neck 15. The cups are formed of resilient material, and the necks 15 are of such size as to substantially engage the side walls of the upper reduced portions of the key-hole slots -13, so that when the suction attaching elements are mounted in position, the heads 16 will overlap the portions of the wall 7 and sheet 12 at opposite sides of said reduced upper ends of the slots 13 as shown clearly in Figure 3. The enlarged lower ends of the slots 13 are of a size to permit of the passage of the heads 16, and after the heads have been passed through the lower ends of the slots 13, the cups are shifted upwardly so as to be effectively connected to the container or card case. It is thus apparent that the suction cups or body portions 14 of the suspension elements may be readily applied to a part of the vehicle, such as the instrument or dash board, without marring or damaging the latter.
The suspension or suction attaching elements detachably connect the holder with the vehicle body so that the holder can be removed therefrom when desired, and the engagement of the suspension or suction attaching elements in the key-hole slots 13 detachably connect the 'container or card case with the suspension or suction attaching elements so that the container or card case can be disconnected without necessitating the disconnecting of the suspension or suction attaching elements from the vehicle body, if desired. It will be further seen that access can be had to they license certificate in a convenient manner when occasion so requires, and without requiring detachment of the holder from the vehicle or detachment of the container from the suspension elements.
Minor changes may be 'made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is An automobile license certificate holder comprising a flat flexible envelope adaptedto receive a license certificate and having a transparent sheet of material in the front thereof through which the certificate is visible, said envelope being open at one side and having a pair of spaced inverted key-hole slots in the upper portion of the back wall thereof, a pair of vacuum cups detachably mounted in the slots of said envelope and providing suction means for detachably connecting the envelope to a support, and a stiffening sheet applied to the inner face of said back wall and having key-hole slots formed therein conforming to and registered with the first named slots.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
