ANTIFRICTION BEARING.

This invention relates to anti-friction bearings. Y Y
One object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and efficient anti-friction 5 bearing especially adapted for'railway car side bearings, in which the parts are so arranged that the anti-friction element is automatically returned to normal centered position when free from load.
Another object of the invention is to provide a side bearing including'a base support Yadapted to be applied to the truck bolster of a railway car, which support is adapted to accommodate a vertically adjustable '5 bearing plate upon which an anti-friction element is adapted to move to either side of central position with reference to the support, in conjunction with centering and retaining mea-ns including a housing which W lits over the roller vand the base support in such manner as to enclose 'the same except for the engaging portion of the roller, said housing being movably and detachably connected to said base support and in operative 'f5 position serving to hold the various parts of the bearing in assembled relation, and to release said parts when said housing is del tached from said support.

The housing 31 also is provided with end walls 236-36, merging with the side walls, the distance between said end walls being greater than the distance between the end walls 22 and 23 of the base support, Each of the end walls 3G is offsetcentrally and outwardly as indicated at 37 to provide spring pockets 3S-38 which when the device is assembled cooperate` with the extensions 24 and 25 of the base support to housethesprings 2Q-32, preferably under a considerable initial. or preliminary compression, at the outer sides of the end walls QQ and 23 of the base support, the springs bearing against the end walls of the pockets and against the outer surfaces of the end walls 22 and 23 of the support. The housing 31 is further provided with a top wall 39, said wall being provided with upwardly curved port-ions 40.-40, one of which is dispnsedl on each side .of the anti-friction element C, the portions 40--40 in conjunction with the extensions 24 and 25 of the side Vwalls defining a cage having an opening 41 through which the anti-friction element projects, The inner surfaces 141 of the portions 4 0-40 are adapted to engage the opposite sides of the anti-friction element so that displacement of the roller to either side of central position causes corresponding travel of the housing 3l. The engaging surfaces 141 are so arranged that when in assembled relation. of the bearing, said surfaces are curved inwardly and disposed above the central axis of the anti-friction element C, said surfaces being straight or vertically arranged as indicated at 42, below the central axis of the'roller, when the same is in position upon the bearing plate 29, so that said surfaces permit different vertical positions ofl the roller resulting from adjustment of the bearing plate, without interfering with the operation of the device. Each of the side walls 35-35 of the housing 31 is provided with horizontally extending longitudinally spaced slots 43. 43, and in order to detachably secure the housing 31 in assembled relation with the base support, the retaining bolts are employed. The bolts at the 'opposite ends of the bearing, `extend through the horizontally disposed slots in the side walls 35 of the housing, and through the annular openings in the side walls 21--21 of the base support, the bolts being retained in detachable relation by means of ordinary nuts as indicated at 44. In order to prevent accidental detachment of the bolts, a locking plate 45 having turned ends 46,-46`is .provided sol as to engage the bolt heads to preven-t'turning thereof, `and on the opposite sideA of the bearing a locking plate 47 similar to the plate 45, is provided, which prevents accidental rotation of the nuts 44, while permitting forcible removal thereof so that the housing 31 may be detached from the base support. With the locking plate arrangement .just described, it will be appreciated that the nuts 44 are held upon the bolts in certain definite positions so that the distance between the bolt heads Voperative condition as illustrated in Fig. 1,
when it is desired to adjust the bearing plate, or replace the springs-or roller, the housing 31 may be removed by loosening the nuts on the bolts and removing the bolts from the bearing, vafter which the housing 31 may be lifted vertically thereby releasing the springs E32-32, and releasing the roller, so that the same maybe removed from the bearing. Then this has been done the bearplate assembly B may be adjusted by substituting, removing or inserting shims 30, as desired. In reassembling the device new springs may be substituted for the springs '32 if necessary, and a new roller mightbe provided if desired, the parts being placed in position before reassembling the device. After the bearing plate has been adjusted, or the springs or-roller replaced if. necessary, the roller is pla-ced upon the bearing tif) plate and the housing partially llitted over the same. The springs are then` interposed between the end walls of the pockets 37-37 and the end walls 22 and 23 of the base member, after which the housing is brought down to rest on the latter. The bolts may then be reinserted to hold the housing in position, which in turn maintains the springs and roller in assembled r lation with reference to the bearing. After the bearing plate is adjusted vertically, it will be appreciated that the roller will be in a new vertical position with respect to the housing 31, and the changes in position-of -the roller are accommodated by reason of the shape of the curved engaging faces 41-41 of the curved `portions 40-40 willbe appreciated.
Then the device is in assembled condition, assuming movement of the anti-friction clement G toward the rightas indicated in dotted lines, the housing 31 will be carried therewith, this movement being permitted by reason of the provision of the slots 43 4?, and during such movement the left hand spring 32 will be compressed between the end wall of the left hand pocket 37, and the wall 22 of the base member, the energy stored in such spring serving to return the housing 31 toward central position, the housing carrying the roller therewith when free from load. Movement of the anti-friction element C toward the left effects a reverse operation of the bearing similar to that just described. i

will be seen that the housing when in assembled relation not only serves to maintain the parts in normal centered position or to return them thereto, but also protects the working parts of the bearing, and maintains them in assembled-relation, the housing being readily detachable for the purpose of making any necessary adjustments.
Ihile I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred manner of carrying out the invention, the saine is merely illustrative, and I contemplate all changes and modifications that come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim: p
1. In an anti-friction bearing, the combination with a support having a vertically adjustable bearing surface; an anti-friction element adapted to move back and forth on said bearing surface; a housing loosely fitting about said anti-friction element and detachably connected to said support for movement in a horizontal plane substantially constant when in assembled relation and parallel to said support, said housing beingV provided with surfaces arranged to engage said anti-friction element above the central axis thereof, and being so formed as to permit vertical adjustment of said element and said bearing plate without interference with the operation of said bearing, said support and said housing being provided with oppositely extending rigid portions adjacent their ends; and yieldable means interposed between said oppositely extending portions.
2. In an anti-friction bearing, the combination with a supporting member provided with side and end walls and said support being provided with a bearing plate seat; of a bearing plate associated with said seat; an anti-friction roller adapted to move back and forth upon said bearing plate; of a housing provided with means adapted to engage said anti-friction roller whereby said housing moves with said roller, said housing being provided with side and end walls, said side walls fitting over the side walls of said support; yieldable means interposed between the adjacent end walls of said support and said housing at veach end of the bearing; and retaining elements detachably mounted in said support and'engaging in slots provided in said housing, whereby movement of said housing with said roller effects actuation of said yieldable means to urge return of said i'oller toward central position when free from load.
3. In an anti-friction bearing, the combi-l nation with a support having side and end walls and being provided with a bearing surface; and a housing having side and end walls fitting on the outer sides of the side and kend walls of said support; yieldable means binati on with a supporting member provided with side and end walls and extensions projecting'outwardly beyond said end walls; a bearing plate associated with said support; shims for adjusting the vertical height of saidibearing plate; an anti-friction roller adapted to move to either side of central po sition with reference to said bearing plate; and a housing having means fitting about said roller and adapted to engage the same above the central axis thereof to retain said roller in assembled relation with reference to said support, said housing being provided with side and end walls fitting over the side and end walls of said support; yieldable means interposed between the adjacent end walls of said support and said housing, said yieldable means bearing upon the extensions provided at the ends of said support; and nieans fordetacliably connecting said housing with said support so as to permit movement of said housing upon movement of said anti-friction element.
5. In an anti-friction bearing, the combination with a support; of a housing co-operating with said support, said support being provided with spaced end walls, and said housing being provided with oppositely distance than the walls on said support, and being adapted to over-lap said latter walls; springs disposed between the walls of said support and said housing; a bearing surface arranged betweenV the walls of said support; and an anti-friction element mounted on said bearing surface, said housing being provided with portions fitting about said anti-friction element above the central axis thereof; and means for detachably connecting said housing to said support for operative movement with respect thereto.
