Description

WILLIAM W. GBEENER, 011 BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
IMPROV EMENT m BRlI-IECH-LQAING FlRE-ARMS.
Specificalsion forming part of Letters Patent N0. B.6.328, dated 0otober 5,1875; application filed June 3, 1874.
T0 all whom 1't mag; concem:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WELLING- TON GREENER, 0f Birmingham, England, have invented Improvements in Breech-Loading Gans, Rifies. and Pistols, 0f which the fol- 10wing i s a. specification:
My invention refers 130 the descrip'tion 0f breeeh-loading guns known es the Lefaucheux 01 drop-down principleg and consists in an improved method 0f securing the bal*rels' to the aetion.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a. partia.l seetionalview of tl1e l11ve0h-210ti011, Wit-h the banel mised for l0adiug, witl1 the side view 0f the extended rib A, a-11d top holt G, and bottom holt. J in position. Fig. 2 represents 21 top view 0f the breeelnact-ion closed, with the top holt C and bobto1n holt J in position, as shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 represents a. back view. Fig. 4 represents 21 side -"*a.nd top view 0f the ieer, with long pin and canns E a.nd H, which engage witl1 the top holt O and bottom holt; J. Fig. 5 represents side and top views of tl1e holt O. Fig 6 rep- IGSGIJtside and top views of holt J.
Ehe manner 0f carrying my invention into eft'ect is as follows: -I make an extended rib projecting beyond the breech end of .the barrels A, Fig. l, and fixed between the barrels, shuting int0 the false breeeh B, Fig'. l, when closed. I make a cross-bolt t0 work half through. the false breech ab the top. The point of seid holt engages in 21 round hole through the extended rib, effectually preVenting the barrels from rising 011 the springing back of the standing breech at the moment of firing, G, Fig. 2. I work the seid holt by a. 1ever on the top, over the stmp 0f the breakoft D, Fig. 2. I make a hole in the stra.p of the false breech, in which I insert a tumbler 01 cam, E, Fig. 3. The cra.nl of seid tumbler projects thro1igh the.t1op 0fi;he stpg 1p of break- 130111 holt J, Fig..6.
0ff, upon which I fix a. thumb-lever, D, Figs. 2 and 4, working over tl1e strap 0f tl1e false breech, 211111 I also use a. sear-spring, F, acting 011 the tumbler t0 make it self-locking. The t0p holt; is combined wibh tl1e bottom holt, the sarne lever being used 110 effect. I make a. long pin, G, Figs. 1 a-nd 4, extending from the strap 0t' brea.k-otf down L0 tl1e trigger-plate, and fixed close 130 tl1e back of tl1e standing breeeh, tl1e top end 0f the pin projecting through the strap 0f break-off, the bottom end through ehe trigger-plate, Figs. 1 and 3. I make a projection 01'0211n, E, Fig. 4, nea-1 the top of the seid pin ab the'firont, whieh engages in tl1e t opbolt O,Fig. 5. (Shown in position in Fig. 2.) I also make another projection 01 cam, H, Fig. 4, 0n the seid pin ab the side, which engeges in a s1ot in tb e botlhe top 0f seid pin is fitted to the lever, working 0n the strap 0f false breec-h by moving tl1e lev-er to the rigl1t-. The cross-bolt O is withd rawn towa.rd tl1e left, and the bottom holt. J is drawn backward by 1;he same moti on of the lever, disengaging t1he barrels f0r loading. 1 use Ehe 01- dinary snap, double and single bottom holt; y
also, a double holt 0f im proved. sha.pe, J, Fig. 6, Which is the ordinary d0uble holt, with a eombination 0f the slot 011 the left side, whieh gives 21 longer bite both 011 the end g 1nd side Of the lump.
Heving 110W described my invention, Wh11t'. I clairn a5 new, am] desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Tl1e co'mbination of the leverl) 2ynd shal't G, having arms E H, with the bolts O J, EIS deseribed.
WILLIAM WELLINGTON GREENER.
