Description
Sept. 4, 1928.
L. P. ROSE LINOLEUM VENDING MACHINE INVENTOR. P190 8 fir; A TTORNEY.
Filed June 29, 1926 Patented Sept. 4, 1928.
v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS P. ROSE, OF ARNOLD, NEBRASKA.
.LINOLEUM-VENDING MACHINE.
Application filed June 29, 1928. Serial No. 119,338.
. roll of linoleum and an expansible member carried by a stand adjacent the rack, and around which expansible member linoleum is wrapped for vending and measuring purposes, and after the vending and measuring operation said enpansible roller is contracted, thereby allowing said roller to be easily removed trom the roll of linoleum.
A turtherobject is to provide an erpansible linoleum roller comprising a tubular member having a plurality of longitudinally disposed convened members adj accnt the tubular memher and having link connections with the tubular member and which link connections, upon movement towards one end of the tubular member, move the longitudinally disposed members outwardly to a position where they will form a roll of a predetermined size, and when moved inwardly will contract the device thereby allowing the expansible roll as a whole to be easily moved from a roll of linoleum.
A further object is to provide a flanged sleeve slidably mounted and keyed on the tubular member and having link connections with the expanding links for controlling said expanding links. Also to provide a sleeve having right and left hand thread cooperating with the flanged sleeve and a member on the tubular member. and forming means whereby said flanged sleeve can be easily moved for expanding or contracting the device.
A further object is to provide a gripping strip having supports extending through elongated openings in. one oi the expanding members and cooperating with said expanding member for gripping the end of a piece of linoleum.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings i Figure 1 s a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the expansible roll.
Figure is a side elevation of the expert sible roller, the rack and the adjacent roll support.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of one of the expansible roller supports.
Figure at is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on line 4P4: of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is an enlarged longitudinal sec tional view through the controlling means of the expansible roller.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 desi nates a rack having ahorizontally disposed shalt 2 on which a roll of linoleum is placed for display purposes, however several rolls may be placed on the same rack if desired for display purposes. Disposed adjacent the rack 1 are vertically disposed standards 4: in" bearings 5 of which the ends of a. longitudinally disposed tubular member 6 are rotatably mounted, and from which bearing the ends of the tubular member 6 may be easily removed through the upper end thereof. One end of the tubular member 6 is provided with a crank 7 adapted to be grasped by the operator during the rotation of the device.
Pivotally connected at 8 to the tubular member 6 is a plurality of pairs of crossed links 9, the outer ends of which are pivotally connected to shaft 10 carried by the inner sides of the convened longitudinally disposed plates 11, which plates are adapted to be moved inwardly and outwardly as desired. ll hen moved outwardly one of said plates 11 moves towards the inner side of the gripping plate 12 which is supported on standards 13 carried by the tubular member (3, and between which plate 12 and the member 11 the end let oi" the linoleum is grippedand held whereby upon the rotation of the enpansiblc roller linoleum from the roll 3 will be wound onto the expansible roller for vending purposes, and during which rolling operation, the material may be measured. After the desired amount of linoleum is wound onto the expansible roller when in expanded position the roller is removed from the standard 1 and then contracted which will release the gripping actionot the plate 12 and allow the roller to be easily removed from the roll of linoleum and replaced on the standard 1. Pivotally connected to the rods 10 are links 15, which links extend towards one end of the tubular member 6 and are connected at 16 to the flange 17 of a threaded sleeve 18. The sleeve 18 is slidably keyed on the tubular member 6 and rotates therewith. Disposed on the sleeve 6 is a second sleeve 19 having a flange 20 which engages the standard 4 and threaded on said sleeves is a rotatable member 21, which is provided with right and lefthanded thread cooperating with right and left handed thread carried by the sleeves 18 and 19, therefore it will be seen that the sleeve 18 will be moved axially inwardly and outwardly according to the direction of rotation of the member 21 for expanding or contracting the roller.
From the above it will be seen that an expansible and contractible roller is provided for linoleum rolls which roller is simple in construction, positive in its operation and may be easily and quickly expanded and contracted as desired. It will also be seen that during the expanding operation the gripping plate 12 will be moved to operative position for gripping the end of the linoleum.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. An expansible linoleum roll comprising spaced supports, a tubular member rotatably mounted in bearings of the support, a plurality of longitudinally disposed outwardly movable parallel strips adjacent the peripheryof the tubular member, links carried by said strips and pivotally connected to the tubular member, said links being in crossed relation, a longitudinally movable threaded sleeve mounted on the tubular member, links connectedbetween said sleeve and the strips,
a second sleeve mounted on the tubular member, opposed threads carried by said sleeves, a longitudinally disposed stationary gripping strip to the outside of one of said first named strips, means carried b the gripping strip and extending through e ongated openings in one of the strips and anchored to the tubular member, one of said first mentioned outwardly movable strips cooperatingowith the inner side of the gripping stri upon outward movement, and a member t readed on said sleeves and forming means whereby one of said sleeves is axially moved. y
2. The combination with an expansible roller comprising a shaft, longitudinally disposed outwardly and inwardly movable strips carried by said shaft, of a gripping strip, one of said movable strips upon its outward movement cooperating with the inner side of the gripping strip and rigid members carried by the gripping strip and extending through elongated apertures in one of the strips and connected with the shaft.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
LOUIS P. Ross.
