Application filed'qctober 13, 1926: serial no. 141,36i.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in spraying devices, and more particularly to a spraying device having a cylinder in which a reciprocating piston 5 places air under pressure tobe directed across the spray nozzle. A
An Object of the invention is to provide a spr'ayihg device (if the abovetype wherein the cylinder is closed at the end through v which the piston rod extends by a metallic head withwhich is associated a non-metallic member which operates to prevent any drum head noisesincident to the movement of the piston rod through a guiding opening in said head.
A further object of the invention is topro-.
vide a spraying device of, the above type whereinthe metallic head is provided with a flanged portion adaptedto extend inside of the cylinder, and with a shoulder adapted to engage the end of the cylinder, and wherein said flange is formed with an annular groove into which the wall of the cylinder may be indented for holding the head in engagement with the cylinder. In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a spraying device embodying the improvements, and
Fig. 2 is an enlargedsectional view through a portion ofthe cylinder showing the closing headfconstruction for the cylinder.
/ Prior to my invention, it has been common to provide a spraying device which includes a chamber in which a liquid to be sprayed is placed,- and a nozzle projecting from said chamber, and also a cylinder in which there is a reciprocating piston for directing an air jet across the nozzle to spray the liquid. In devices of this type, there is a reciprocating piston in thecylinder, and a rod with a handle attached for movingthe piston. A head is provided at the outer end of the cylinder which has the opening therethrough for the piston rod. These heads have usually been made of wood. The present invention is directed to a metallic head which may be used in place of these wooden heads. This-metallic head is preferably formed from sheet metal and includes a portion extending across the open end of the cylinder for closing the same, which has an opening therethrough for the rod. The head also has a flange which is of such size as to fit within the cylin dyer. The head also has a shoulder adapted to bear against the end of the cylinder.
flange is'provided with an annular groove so that the'wall of the cylinder may be indented to hold the head in the cylinder. In order to prevent drum head noises incideht to the vibration of the portion of the head: which extends across the end of the cylinder, by reason of the movement of the rod through the opening in the head, I have provided a non-metallic member which is attached to the head, preferably to the inside'there of, and extends all the way across the end 'ofthe cylinder. This non-metallic member is preferably made of pasteboard, and it is secured to the head by an eyelet.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, my improved spraying device consists of a cylindrical'chamber 1 having a fillingopening closed by a screw cap 2. This chamber 1 is alsoprovided with a pipe or nozzle 3 which leads down into the chamber; Attached to .this'chambered portion 1 is a bracket 4 carrying a. cylinder '5. The cylinder 5 is provided with the usual opening adjacent the endof the pipe 3. In the cylinder 5 is V a piston 6 carried by a piston rod 7 When this, piston is reciprocated, air is compressed in the cylinder, and as it escapes through the opening adjacent the end ofthe pipe 3, the
liquid. is. drawn from the chamber 1 and is ejected in the form of a spray. These parts of the spraying device are well known in the art, andfurther description thereof is not thought necessary. i
vTheend of the cylinder 5 is closed by a head 8. This head 8 is preferably formed of sheet metal and includes a bodyfpolrtion 9 of disk shape. which is formed with a flange 10. The flange 10 at its inner end is rolled in. at 11 so that the flanged portion of the head may be readily inserted in the cylinder for closing the end thereof. This flanged portion is of substantially the same diameter as the inner diameter of the cylinder. The flanged portion 10 is provided with an annular'groove 12. The cylinder 5 is preferably made of sheet metal and can be readily, therefore. in-
dented as indicated at 13. The indentations ill through the head and isturned against the outer face of the head and the inner face of the non-metallic member. passes through this eyelet.
The opening in the metallic head for the piston rod is a guiding opening, and without the non-metallic member, the rodengaging the edge of the metal at the opening through which it passes, is likely to cause a vibration in the body portion 9, thus making drum head noises which are objectionable. By placing this non-metallic member, which is preferably of pasteboard, against the inner face of the head and securingit thereto, all of these noises are avoided. The piston rod 7 is provided with the usual handle 16.
It will be obvious that instead of using an eyelet for securing the non-metallic member to the head. this non-metallic member may be glued to the head in part, or throughout theentire extent thereof. It is also obvious that other ways of securing the non-metallic member to the head may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-v 1. An air pump for a spraying device comprising'a cylinder, a piston in said cylinder, :1 piston rodconnected to said piston and ahead for closing said cylinder, said cylinder being formed of sheet metal and said head being formed of sheet metal and including a body portion'extending across the end of the cylinder and having an inwardly projecting flange adapted to fit within the cylinder, said flange having an annular groove therein into which the cylinder wall may be extended for holding the head in the cylinder.
2. An air pump for a spraying device comprising a cylinder, a piston in said cylinder, a piston rod connected to said piston and a head for closing said cylinder, said cylinder being formed of sheet metal and said head being formed of sheet metal andincluding a The piston rod 7,
bodyportion extending across the end of the cylinder and having an inwardly projecting flange adapted to fit within the cylinder, said flange having an annular groove therein into which the cylinder wall may be extended for holding the head in the cylinder, said head having a shoulder at the outer edge of the body portion for engaging the end of the cylinder. i
v 8. An air pump for a spraying device comprising a cylinder, a piston in said cylinder, a piston rod connected to said piston and a head for closing said cylinder, said cylinder being formed of sheet metal and said headbeing formed of sheet metal and includinga body portion extending across the end of the cylinder and having an inwardlyprojecting flange adapted to fit within the cylinder,
said flange having an annular groove therein into which the cylinder wall may be extended for holding the head in the cylinder, said head having a shoulder at the outer edge of the body portion for engaging the end of the cylinder, a non-1netallic disk located on the inner face of said head, said disk and head having an opening'therethr'ough for the piston rod, and an eyelet located insald opening and clamping said disk against the head, said non-metallic disk being'of substantially the same diameter as the inner diameter of the cylinder. i
l. An air pump for a'spraying device 1ncludlng a cylinder, a piston 1I1S211Cl cylinder,
a piston rod connected to said piston,a head for closing said cylinder, said head being formed of sheet metal and having an opening centrally therethrough for the piston rod, a
non-metallic member disposed at one face oi said head and in contact therewith and having an opening centrally th'erethrough for said piston, and means for securing said nonnietallic member to said head centrally of the head for preventing drum head noises there-- from.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
