UNITED STATES RAYMOND E. JOHNSON, OF MANISTEE, MICHIGAN.
COMBINATION TIE AND GQLLAR FOLDER.
Application filed November 5, 1927. Serial No. 231,358.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a combination tie and collar folder adapted for use either in folded conditi on or in upright condition for supporting collars, ties, collar buttons, etc.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a device of this class which will be simple in structure, economical of manufac ture, and highly efiicient in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a tie and collar support which, when raised to vertical and extended position, will support the ties and collars in vertical posi tion spaced slightly from the panels comprising the folder.
It is another-object of the invention to provide a folder of this class having a number of panels and provided with swingable hangers or supporting members so that the device may be folded into compact form to retain the ties and collars in pressed form, and at the same time, while retaining the ties and collars in a pressed form, occupying a minimum amount of space.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by a 'reference to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, and in which,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the invention in extended form with parts broken away.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the invention in folded form.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the brackets used in the invention.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary elevational view of one of the panels showing the button container in open form.
The invention in its preferred form comprises a pair of end panels 8 and 9 swingably connected at their inner edges to a pair of swingably connected intermediate panels 10 and 11. In each of the intermediate panels there are provided non-flexible reinforcing members 12 and 13. In each of the end panels there is provided a flexible reinforcing member 14 and 15, these reinforcing members 14 and 15 being of considerably less thickness than the reinforcing members 12 and 13.
Entended around the outer surfaces of the reinforcing members 14 and 15 and the reinforcing members 12 and 13 is a fabric covering 16 formed from oil cloth, leather or other suitable material. A layer 17 of fabric serves, with the fabric 16, to enclose the reinforcing members 12 and 13 and the reinforcing members 14 and 15, this fabric 17 being made from felt, velvet, or other suitable material. As clearly appears from Fig. 4, the fabric covering 16 is doubled over the edge of each of the panels 8 and 9, and stitched thereto. Stitching 18 and 19 extends through the fabric 16 and 17 between the edge of the reinforcing member 12 and the edge of the reinforcing member 14 to provide the loop or flexible hinge 20 (so that the panel 9 may easily be folded upon the panel 11. Stitching 21 is projected through the fabric 16 and 17 at 21. and 22 to provide the loop or flexible hinge 23 so that the panel 8 may easily fold upon the panel 10. The fabric 16 and 17 is stitched together at 24 and 25 and 26 to provide the loop or flexible hinge 27, so that the panel 10, when the panel 8 is folded thereon, may fold upon the panel 11 after the panel 9 has been folded thereon.
Secured to the inner face of each of the panels 10 and 11 is a supporting member, this supporting member comprising a bracket having a main body 28 and aknuckle 29 curled thereon, and formed from a depending tongue thereon, this tongue being cut away as at 30. As shown in Fig. 1, two of these brackets are mounted on the inner face of each of the panels 10 and 11, and the angularly turned ends 32 of the legs 33 of the U- shaped supports 31 are projected through the knuckles, the legs 33 being adapted to engage the cut away portion 30 when these U- shaped supports swing downwardly into horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 1. These supports serve as a means for supporting ties, soft collars, handkerchiefs. and the like which may be placed thereon. The supports are swingably mounted and consequently may be folded to lie in engagement with the panels 10 and 11, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
hen the device is in the position shown in Fig. 1, the panels, being spread out, will serve as a support to retain the folder in up right position, the supporting members 31 falling by gravity into the horizontal position shown in Fig. 1. The ties, collars or other articles which may be positioned on the bight of the U 31 will consequently be held in vertical position spaced outwardly from the inner face of the respective panels.
On account of the flexible loops or hinges 20 and 23, when the supporting members are swung into upwardly extended position so that they lie in engagement with the inner face of the panels 10 and 11 and the panels 8 and 9 are folded inwardly on the panels 10 and 11 and the entire folder folded in the position shown in Fig. 2, it is evident that the panels 8 and 9 Will serve to press the ties and collars if they are of the soft type. When used in this manner, it is believed evident that a very satisfactory folder for ties, collars, and the like is provided, so that the ties, etc., may be packed in a handbag for travellin On the panel 10 I have shown a button cont-ainer 34 which is made from fabric and provided with the draw strings 35, this button container being a sort of sack arrange ment. It is secured to the panel 10 by means of the stiff disc 36 which is positioned therein and secured to the panel 10 by means of the screws 37, the disc 36 determining thereby the base of the container.
Q The comparative flexibility of the panels 8 and 9 is effected so that these panels which lie in engagement with the fabric material supported on the hangers or supports which are secured to the panels 10 and 11, may, to some extent, accommodate itself to the variations in shape and form of the material supported thereon, so that a. close contact and a firm pressing of these articles is effected.
With a folder constructed in this manner the advantages of a neat and attractive hanger for such articles, as well as the pressing feature, is obtained. The presence of the button container makes the device a complete article in this particular line and one Which permits the placing of the various articles in a well-defined location at all times.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of my invention, I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details of structure shown, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A folder of the class described, comprising: a pair of end panels; a pair of intermediate panels; a covering extending around said panels, said covering forming a flexible hinge intermediate the adjacent edges of said intermediate panels and intermediate the ad jacent edges of said end panels and said intermediate panels; a non-flexible reinforcing member in said intermediate panels; a flexible reinforcing member in said end panels; and supporting means on the inner face of each of said intermediate panels.
2. A folder of the class described, comprising: a pair of end panels; a pair of intermediate panels; a covering extending around said panels, said covering forming a flexible hinge intermediate the adjacent edges of said intermediate panels and intermediate the adjacent edges of said end panels and said intermediate panels; a non-flexible reinforcing member in said intermediate panels; a flexible reinforcing member in said end panels; and swingably mounted supporting means on the inner face of each of said intermediate panels.
3. A folder of the class described, comprising: a pair of end panels; a pair of intermedi ate panels; a covering extending around said panels, said covering forming a flexible hinge intermediate the adjacent edges of said intermediate panels and intermediate the adj acent edges of said end panels and said intermediate panels; a non-flexible reinforcing member in said intermediate panels; a flexible reinforcing member in said end panels; swingably mounted supporting means on the inner face of each of said intermediate panels, said supporting means being adapted for swinging upwardly to lie in engagement with the inner face of the intermediate panel on which mounted, and adapted upon positioning of said intermediate panel in vertical position for moving by gravity to horizontal position; and means for limiting the downward movement of said supporting members to retain the same in horizontal position.
In testimony whereof I have signed the foregoing specification.
RAYMOND E. JOHNSON.
