NOVELTY BOX.

This invention relates to a novelty box designed for the reception of loose articles, such as candy, etc. It incorporates into its structure certain unusual features which attract the eye, particularly of juvenile persons for whom the present box is especially 1ntended.

It is a purpose of my invention to provide a box of the character described which may be formed of a single piece of board, appropriately configured and foldable into thedesired shape; to provide connecting flapsby which the box is held together, dispens ng if desired, withtheaid of extraneous securing means; to utilize the boxcover, or some other fold able part thereof, to simulate a well known and pleasing object whlch may be supported in an open or upright position to provide a novelty eifect; and to accomplish the above ends in amanner which is simple, inexpensive and easily operated.

In" the description to; follow, as well as 1n the drawings to which reference w ll be made, the exemplification of my nvention is in the for1n-ofia-boat or raft of which the sail is the cover forv the box; This is chosen as a convenient and apt illustration of one form which my invention may take, although obviously the. boxmight be designed to simulate other objects which-would prove interesting and attractive to the. persons for whom it 1s intended, Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 1s a view inperspective of the box with the cover thereof folded down in closedposition;

Referring to Fig. 5, the blank therein shown comprises a central strip composedof integral sections arranged end to end and comprising a pair ofadjacent sides A and with end flaps G and D joined respectively thereto- Between the: two side sections is a bend line a constituting the bow ofthe boa-t flaps C and D are connected to the side section A and B, respectively, along bend lines I).

Extending laterally from opposite sides of the side section A are flaps E and F connected thereto at bend lines 0. A pair of similar flaps Gand H extend oppositely from the other side section B, being connected thereto alongia continuation of the same bend line 0. Between the flaps E and F and thc end flap C are other flaps I and J extending oppositely from the side section A and connected thereto along the same bend line 0. These lastnamed flaps are separated from the flaps E and F by severance lines (5 so as to bc foldabl e independentlythereof. The flap I is itself provided with a: pair of bend lilies e and f, the latter running in a direction which is parallel to the bend line 0 to define atab 8 at its top. It is preferred that the bend line 6 be obliquely disposed, about as indicated, so that the area between itself and the bend lines 0 and cl will constitute a deck 7 portion 9'for the boat which is built up from this blank. In addition, one ormore slots 10 are provided-through the flap I in a direction perpendicular to the bend line 0 and prefer-- ablyofl'set with each other as shown.

At the other endof the blank is a flap K extendin-g'f rom the side section B in the same dlrection' as does theflap I from thecorresponding edge of the side section A. o and close to the slot 19. I provide also in I the end flap D a slot 21 which proceeds from the bendline b obliquely into the body of this flap.

The flap J is then bent around below the flap H to secure the latter in place, the tab 18 is upturned, and the tab 11 is entered inthe slot 19 to secure the boat bottom J in place. The lab 12 is bent up to lie inside of the two end flaps C and D which,.when disposed in their intended positions, will lap past each other to form a backer stern for the boat.

The hooked tab 13 may be entered through the slot 21 to secure the one flap to the other although this method of fastening is optional.

If desired, the one may be adhered to the other so as to ensure a permanent erected con struction.

The upper structure of the novelty box comprises the deck flap K whichis brought to a horizontal position parallel with the bottom J, where it rests upon the overlapping flaps G and H. It is also rested upon the tab Ll which is bent inwardly from the end flap C. The flap I which constitutes both the cover and sail is next brought to position. Thisis done by bending the deck portion 9 to overlie one edge of the deck flap K, and then upstanding the remainder of the flap to simulate a hoisted sail. The leg 16 is next erected along either of the bend lines 9 or 71. so as to present its tab 17 to one of, the two slots 10 wherein it may be locked. In the one position the sail is stood up from the deck slightly higher than in the other'with the deck portion 9 either horizontal or inclined accordin to which position is selected.

The leg 16 constitutes a support for the sail which, when erected, exposes the interior of the novelty box. In this position articles may be placed in or taken from its interior througlnthe opening 15. To close the box it is necessary merely that the sail support be folded down, following which the sail is also folded down thereover to provide. a closure for the box. 8 is bent along the line f to overlie the side section B, aportion of this tab being then passed through the slot 20 where it serves to holdthe cover fixedly in place. A lateral extension on the tab 8, simulating a flag or pennant, acts as a hook to lock the tab within the slot 20. g I

A box which differs in only minor particulars from the construction justdescribed is set forth in Figs. 6 and 7. In this example the novelty of the article resides in its simulating the appearance of a raft rather'than a boat having a pointed bow. tion J" joined along its opposite edges by bend lines 2" and j to side sections A and B, respectively, in the latter of which is an elongated slot 20. To the side section A. is joined along a bend line is, a sail section I, one. portion thereof which is defined by bend lines 72 and a providing an overlying deck portion. The top portion 8 of the sail may be appropriately configured to display a flag or other object having the mechanical function of serving-as a tab for interlocking with the slot 20. An underlying deck section K" which joined to the side'sect-ion B along the bendline Z is provided witha cut-out 15 permitting access to the interior of the box, and also providing a leg support 16 which is foldably connected-to the deck section along one of the two bend lines g or it.

Joined to opposite ends of the bottom section J are flaps L and Mwvhich, when folded, lie to the inside of other flaps N and O, which are extended from opposite which is bent outwardly from one end, when i the box is erected, to simulate a rudder for the raft. The sail section I may be upstood from the deckin the sameinanner as has already been described, the leg, 16 sustaining it in this position. In like manner, when the leg support is foldeddown, the said section may be closed over the deck section and be folded along the line f to present its'top tab'8 within the slot 20 whereby the box cover is secured in place. 1

The novelty package hereindescribed may conveniently be made of one piece of paper board. Its production involves but little expense, as does also its transportation on account of the flat condition in which it can be shipped. The bend lines are preferably prearranged as by scoring the material at the proper places so as to facilitate the erection of the box. When filled with contents thecover may be closed down or may be left up with the leg support in sustaining posi-' tion. The display thus afforded is attractive to the eye not only because of the unusual ,spectacularfeature which is presented, but

because the contents of the box are partially exposed. Itis to be not-ed that the support for the upstanding sail or other novelty' feature isbendable from horizontal to a vertical posltlon but along a line which is angular, and preferably transverse,'to the bend line of the sail. In this manner the support is ample for all purposes. In addition, as already explained, the support may be adjusted to vary the angular position of the sail.

I claim:

1. A one-piece novelty box made up from a one piece blank having portions thereof adapted for interlocking to provide a bottom,'sides, an apertured top, also a closure therefor which is both foldable down over 7 the top or extensible vertically therefrom, a

A one-piece novelty box which provides an enclosure having an apertured top together with a folding closure therefor, means securing the closure to the box whenin a position overlying the apertured top thereof, and other-means for sustaining the closure in an elevated position with respect to the top, saidlat-ter means forming part of the apertured top and being foldable into parallelism therewith, below the closurewhen the latter overlies the top, substantially as 'described.
