Description
H. H. WRIGHT Aug. 21, 1928.
BRUSH I Gtfozmms Filed April 21, 1925 Patented Aug. 21, 1928.
`muren NSTATES PATENT ora-"Ica` HENRY HARLOW WRIGHT, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO M. S. WRIGHT COMPANY, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MAS- SACHUSETTS.
BRUSH.
Application led April 21, 1925. Serial No. 24,807.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in brushes and more particularly to brushes adapted for use with vacuum cleaners, the primary object of the invention residing in the provision of a brush having at each end a member which is adapted to deflect threads or the like away from the bearings which form a support for the brush.
A further object of the invention consists in forming the deflector in such a manner that it may be easily positioned upon the brush snindleand secured thereto against accidental displacement.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention consists inthe novel details of construction and arrangement of parts described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of the invention, as they now appear to me. it will be understood that such changes may be made as will fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a side elevation.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation with parts omitted and parts shown in longitudinal vertical section.
Fig. 3 is an end view.
Fig. 4 is a detail showing a face view of the dellector member. and
Fig. 5 is a vertical section through the deflector member.
In the drawings 1 indicates the brush spindle, 2 the bristles secured thereto, and 3 the bearings which rotatably support the ends of the brush. The brush which I have illustrated is primarily intended for use in connection with vacuum cleaners, the bearings 3 being secured in the ends of the suction nozzle and rotatably supporting the brush.` The brush spindle is illustrated as comprising a wooden core and metal casing with the end caps 4t and pins 5 which extend through the bushings 6 forming a part of the bearings 3.
Positioned adjacent each end of the brush are the members which are adapted for deflecting threads or the like from the brush dle and the openings formed by the flanges` are of such a size as to allow the spindle to pass therethrough, the flange frictionally engaging the spindle. The notches 9 allow for a slight expansion of the member to receive the spindle and solder or like securing material may be placed in the notches and engage the spindle for securing the members in position against accidental displacement.
The flared and inclined ring-like portions 7 ofthe deflector members are of greater diameter than the bearings 3 and threads or the like picked up by the brush will be deflected away from and over the bearings.
It is a well known fact that in the operation of vacuum cleaners in which a rotatable brush is used that threads which are picked up very often are wrapped around the brush and are engaged with the bearings forming a support for the ends of the brush, this engagement of the threads with the bearings clogging the same and preventing the successful operation of the brush. Vhen deflectors such as I have provided are used the threads cannot be engaged with the bearings but instead are deflected away from and over the bearings thereby preventing clogging.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. The combination with a rotatable brush and supporting bearings therefor, of a deflecting member carried by the brush adjacent each end thereof, each of said deilecting members having an opening through which the ends of the brush may extend and having "a portion extending parallel with the brush a and supporting bearinrfs therefor, of a de- I'iecting member carried by the brush adjacent each end thereof, each of said deiecting members including a portion extending parallel with the brush spindle and an outwardly flared portion, the portion extending parallel With the brush spindle having openings there- 1n, and means positioned in said openings and engageeble with the brush spindle for securing the members in position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
HENRY HARLOW WRIGHT.
