UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
nms'roox.
Reflled for abandoned application Serial No. 476,386, filed June 10, 1921. This application filed July 2, 1924. Serial No. 723,846.
This invention relates to improvements in die stocks and more particularly to a single implement for cutting various sizes of standard threads on pipes and bolts.
One of the Objects of the invention is to provide an implement of this character which will have a plurality of openings of various sizes in accordance with the reco nized standard cutting dies so that a Sing e implement may be employed for a workman to out various sizes of threads.
Other objects of the invention Wlll appear upon consideration of the following detail description and accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device constructed in accordance with my invention,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view showing the die plate, and
Figure 4: is a cross section on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
The subject matter of this application is the same as that contained in my abandoned application, filed June 10, 1921, Serial No. 47 6,386.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, the
guide plate 1 and the die plate 2 are of the same general construction with respect to their dimensions and outer configuration and they are adapted to be maintained in Spaced relation as shown to advantage in Figs. 2 and 4. Accordingly the guide plate 1 is provided at each end with lugs 4.- which are equipped with flanges 5 engaged with the inner surface of the die plate 2. Fastening bolts 6 are passed through the flanges 5 and through the end portions of the die plate to secure the die plate and guide plate in proper superposed relation. Each lug 4 is provided with an opening to receive one end of a handle 7. The handles extend in opposite directions in the manner common to die stocks of this character so that a convenient grip may be obtained to rotate the die stock.
A series of openings of various sizes is provided in the guide plate, these openings eing indicated at 9. Flanges are provided on each opening and are formed by upstanding ribs to formadditional guide means for the member extending through the openings when the device is in use.
In alinement with the openings 9 are the openings 10 in the die plate which are some what larger in diameter as shown and each opening i s provided with radially projecting lugs 11 disposed at 90 with respect to each other and the terminals of the lugs are diametrically spaced apart for a distance equal to the diameter of the openings 9. The openings 9 and 10 correspond in diameter to the standard s zes of dies used for cutting the standard threads on bolts and pipes and it will be obvious that the bolts extended through any one of the openings 9 w ll be engaged by the cutting dies (not shown) in the openings 10 so that the threading operation may be accomplished by simply imparting the necessary rotary movement by manipulating the handle 7.
In this manner a practically universal cutting tool is provided which w ll permit any size thread to be out without the adjustment required when various sizes of dies are to be inserted in the implement now generally employed.
Minor changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
What is claimed is A die stock comprising a plate provided at its intermediate portion with a group of openings, one of said openingsbe ng located at the center of the plate and at the center of the group of Openings, said plate havng upon its side surface a continuous rib completely surrounding each opening of the group and all of the openings of the group, the plate having at its opposite side and at oppositepoints of its edge aligned lugs, d e plate carried by the lugs, and handles detachably connected with the lugs.
In testimony whereof, I have affixed my signature.
JOHN J. GROVE.
