CABLE OPENER AND STRIPPER Filed May 27, 1939 Inventor Patented Nov. 5, 1940 UNITED STATES ?ATENT OFFlCE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to a cable opener and stripper, the general object of the invention being to provide a simple form of tool for cutting the covering of cables of different sizes and provided with an attachment for stripping the wires of a cable.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure l is an elevation of the device.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a view looking into the stripper attachment.
Figure 5 is an end view of the stripper attachment.
In these views the numeral I indicates a handle and the numeral 2 indicates a shank which fits over one end of the handle and is secured thereto by a pin or rivet 3. The shank is formed with a slot 4 in its outer portion which opens out throughthe outer end of the shank and said slot receives a cutter member 5 of rectangular shape ,and which is held in the slot between the two parts of the shank formed by the slot by a bolt 6.\ The edges of this member 5 are beveled to form cutting edges and upper and lower portions of the slotted part of the shank are flattened and tapered as shown at I with the slot extending through said flattened parts and the corners of the cutting member will project beyond said flattened parts. outwardly extending flanges 8 are formed at the upper and lower portions of the shank and curve outwardly from said flattened portions with one pair of flanges being spaced apart to a greater extent than are the flanges of the other pair as shown in Figure 3. The flanges with the flat portions form guides for electric cables or the like, the covering of which are to be cut by the member 5 and when the tool is used to cut the covering of large cables the upper portion as shown in Figure 3 is used where the flanges 8 are spaced a considerable distance apart, but when smaller cables are to be out then the lower part shown in Figure 2 is used. It is to be understood that the tool is moved along the cable with the cable fitting between the flanges and one corner of the'cutting member engaging the cable so as to cut the cover thereof. When the corners exposed have become dull then the bolt can be loosened and the cutting member turned to bring the other two corners into cutting position.
The numeral I0 indicates an attachment for the tool which is designed for stripping wires of the rubber or other coating and this member is formed of metal and includes the substantially flat part I I having a hole I2 therein for receiving the bolt 6 with the sides I3 sloping outwardly from the bottom part and at one end said member I0 is formed into substantially tubular shape to provide the part I I which has a V-shaped slit or recess I6 therein through which the wires are drawn or the device moved over the wire so that the edges of the slit will scrape the coating from the wire. Holes I6 are formed in the sides I3 for the passage of scraped material.
I prefer to make the slopes of the parts I on a 30 degree angle with the handle so that the handle can be elevated from the cable and then by adjusting the handle toward or from the cable the depth of cuts by the knife can be regulated.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the claimed as new is:
1. A cable cutting tool comprising a handle, a. head connected with the handle and having a part thereof substantially flat and sloping from an intermediate part of the head to the free end thereof and said part having a slot therein extending inwardly from the free end and passing through the sloping part, flanges flaring from the sloping part and forming with said sloping part a passage for a cable, and a cutting member held in the slot with a cutting part extending into the passageway, said cutting part being spaced a considerable distance from the free end of the sloping part.
2. A cable cutting tool comprising a handle, a head connected with the handle and having a part thereof substantially flat and sloping from an intermediate part of the head to the free end invention, what thereof and said part having a slot therein extending inwardly from the free end and passing through the sloping part, flanges flaring from the sloping part and forming with said sloping part a passage for a cable, and a cutting member held in the slot with a cutting part extending into the passageway, said cutting member being spaced a considerable distance from the free end of the sloping part, said cutting member being made in the form of a square plate having its corners forming the cutting parts and a bolt passing through the slotted part and through the center of the plate for holding the plate in adjusted position and permitting the plate to be turned to bring any one of the four corners into the passageway.
