IMPROVEMENT IN COOKING-STOVES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,084, dated September 28, 1875; application filed V September 6, 1875.-

This invention consists in making the lids of cookstoves to slide outward, in ways which hold them in place, without lifting, to uncover the holes for vessels in the top of l the stove, and so as to act, when drawn out,

as projecting shelves; in making a shelf under the stove, to be drawn out under and at the side of the stove-own; and in making shelves in the stove-oven, to be drawn out in the same way, and held securely when out.

The stove-top has. vessel-holes A, without ofl'sets for the lids, and has parts B G D across it, attached solidly by bolts. The parts B 0 D have overhanging edges E, which form ways for the lids H, and 7 hold them in place by their projecting edges F. The lids H reach from the sides of the stove to the center, where those on the opposite sides abut together, covering the vessel-holes A. Their upper surfaces are even with those of the other parts of the upper surface of the stove-top, making the stove-top withoutele-vations or depres sions when they are closed. The lids H are ar ranged to slide freelyback and forth, without lifting, a suitable distance, to open and close the vessel-holes. When drawn out they form projecting shelves to the stove. On one or both sides the edges F have their ends projecting sidewise farther than the intermediate space, forming shoulders, which abut against bolts I at the side, to stop the lid H from moving too far either way. The lids are drawn back or forth by dependent handles K, of wood, which drop into spaces left for them in the edges of the stove-top. The bandles K hangbelow the edge of the stove-top, and depend from post K on the lower side of lid H, which fills a space out out therefor. The lids H are cut away in the middle of the stove, as shown, into a form to fit around vessels standing in holes A, so they need not I project as far as if not so formed, while their it may be drawn out on either side nearly,

half-way, to act as a shelf beside the oven, for use in handling the contents of the oven, especially in high-set stoves, and where the lids H are drawn out as shelves. This shelf -M has holding-ways at its edge like those holding the stove-lids H, but reversed, with the other side up. The abutting shoulders in its -edges strike bolts in the center of the stove, so that the shelf may be drawn out about half-way, and be held securely. The stoveoven has shelves N O at the bottom, and one or more elevations in it. These are held by and slide in ways similar to those of the lids H and shelf M, so as to slide out nearly one-half to either side, with a stop in the center, and be held securely from tilting as projecting shelves, for convenience. in examining or handling the contents of theoven, especially when the lids Hare drawn out overhanging. The top lip of the sliding way is cut away on one side of the oven, except in the center, so that the shelf may be removed when not drawn out, the central portion of its edge P being removed to let the two,pa'rts pass each other. f

I claim-- l. The combination of a sliding stove-vesselhole lid, with a channel therefor on the stovetop, and between two elevated portions thereof,.substantially as set forth.

2. A sliding stove-hole lid,'in combination with holding projection E over its edge, substantially as set forth.

3. A sliding stove-hole lid, in combination with a stop to preventits being drawn out too far, substantially as set forth.

4:- The combination of a sliding stove-hole lid, having concave end, with a device for holding the inner end of its edge F when out pans, 860., onto, and with holding device, drawn out, substantially as set forth; substantially as set forth.

5. The combination of two sliding stovelids with the central elevation L, as set forth.

6. The combination, with the stove-oven, of Witnesses: the shelf M, arranged to slide in and out 1111- SAML. J. WALLAGE, der and in front of it, to serve for drawing P. BROWN.
