or index I 'einploy as one ofpits novel feai'n Vits "simplest form in Figure 12 of the drawings.y This sheet comprises the body.
preferablyin alignment with the score-line 3, such notchng in one adaptation forming end tabs 5 which of my vsystem at least constitute the means for interlocking the sheet in a specially devised holder. The sheet is points within the confines ofthe extension 2 so as to form a pair of ears 6.' This slitting is done for two purposeszv'first to yprovide openings throughwhich a carrier strip 7 hereinafter referred to may be introduced, and, sec ondly, tol provide a means or spacing oneV h respect to thel other ink orderA to cause the lower edge of an under sheet to.project a predetermined amount belowV the edgeof a superposed sheet. This interlocking arran ement of the i'gure 6 of the drawings vwherein it will be'observed that the 'upper edg'elvo-f .each succeeding sheet isV engaged beneaththexears' of a sheet. resulting in an overlapping dlsposition lll@ preceding employ visible and serve as a.
seen in Figure 5 of the drawings. At the lower edge each sheet is preferably' provided with index indicia so that .these are -always means for quickly selecting the proper index or record sheet of the series held by the particular holder.
- A further adaptation of this record sheet is shown in Figure 7 of the drawing. The constant handling of the record tends to soil or mutilate the lower edges of the indexV sheets and for this reason it is desirable to some protective means for this edge. I -have devised a special form of protector which consists of a sheet of flexible transparent material such as Celluloid or the like. Referring to Figure 9, a strip 8 of such material of the proper width is folded longitudinally along the line designated 9 and the opposite edges slit arcua-tely as indicated at 10 so as to provide an interlocking tongue. In order to mount said protector upon the sheet in a tention I employ a sheet which is slightly longer than the form illustrated in Figure 12. The lower edge 13 of such a sheet, referring to Figure 8, is, folded rearwardly along the line 11 and a notch is then cut in the two plies at opposite edges of the sheet, as indicated at 12. The protector strip is then slip ed over the folded edge and the tongue ormed by slitting as at 10, is engaged over the lower edge of the notch 12. This protector strip also forms a support for a removablel record card 15 as shown in Figure 7, which card may be partially withdrawn at the sides of the sheet 1v for reference purposes, as indicated by dot- I ted lines in said figure.y For the purpose of retaining the upper edge of this card in posi- `tion the sheet is formed with holding ears 16 cut therefrom to engage over the card 15. The sheet 1 and its lower edge 13 bear duplicate index indicia 14 so that when said edge is folded back against the sheet the index is visible even though the sheet be reversed.
In Figures 5 and 6 the simplified form of the sheet shown in Figure 12 is illustrated as supported in a holder without the use of the carrier strip, and thls may be accomplished by forming the sheet of such width that the tabs 5 will overlap an opening in the holder. In this application of the sheet a holder card or plate 17 is provided with an opening 18 within the body thereof and the tabs 5 overlap the side walls of this opening so as to be slidably mounted therein to permit the interlocking or connection pf the sheets by means of the ears 6 formed 1n the extension 2 thereof, as clearly shown in igure 6. By this means the sheets are supported in overlapping relation with a portion extended at the lower end for indexing purposes and the extent of this overlap 1s manner which will insure its rei determined-by the positionof, the ears -6 Figures 5 and 6 this retaining means comprises a. sheet or card 19 which is engaged at its upper edge 20 beneath ythe ears 6 of tle lowermost sheet. The uppermost sheet o displacement by means of` holding ears 21 cut from the support 17 "and bent outwards suicient for the ortion of the retaining card 19is supported y similar ears 22, disposed adjacent .the lower edge of the opening 18 in the holder. This card 19 is of material suitable to be flexed into position and thus support the assembled sheets at the upper portion in the opening of the holder.
A convenient form for mounting this'h'oldthe series is retained in the holder against purpose while Athe flower Figure 5, to which the holder is affixed by any desired means such as the sta1ples-f24, and the upper leaf of the cover fo dsover and encloses the sheets to protect the' saine in their assembled relation. The mounting of the sheets in this form of holder is faciliatedby the notch 4 at each side thereof which disposes the tab 5 at theA rear of the holder and the body of the sheet in contact with the front face thereof.
In Figures 1 to 3 the sheets such as shown in Figure 7 are adapted to be mounted in a frame type of holder 25,. the edges of which are channeled. The channels 26 at the side edges of the holder 'receive the projecting ends of the carrier strip 7 `before de sheets in a series overlapping and spaced from each other at their lower edges. lThe extension 2 of' the upper sheet is disposed within the channel 26 of the frame or holder and is held in such position by means of a. retainer 2 7 comprising a plate engaging the ends of the strip 7 of the lowerrnost sheet within the channels 26 into which the edges 31 of the retainer extend as shown `in Figure 3. Thisplate is mounted. upon a yielding holder 28 which is pivotally connected by the clip 29 with the "retainer 27.
The opposite ends ofthe spring 28 comprising this holderl are seated against rotative movement in the groove 30 at thelower edge of the frame and the retainer is thus held in contact with the cards under a yildconnection y so Y form a visible index,
assenso ing and outward swinging movement thereof if it be desred to remove or replace any of the sheets of the series;
Ilhe edges 3l of the retainer extend into the channels 26 of the frame and the upper edge thereof may be cut away at 32 to form a iingerhold for the purpose of flexing the retainer laterally, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4, if it be desired to remove the latter from the frame. When so flexed the holder may be swung outward away from the sheets as indeated by dotted lines in Figure 2. When it` is desired to swing the retainer 2? outwardly to release the sheets they are lifted to a substantially horizontal position permitting access to the retainer which is at other times practically in contact with the rear of the holder 25.
The operation of the invention will be apparent from the foregoing description from which it will be seen that the form of sheet used comprises a unit member adapted to be inserted in a typewriting machine for the application of any desired data or indexing thereon, and subsequently assembled with similar sheets bw l means of the'interlocking isposed that the series of sheets are spaced from each other at their lower. endsrendering a portion visible for index indicia and convenient handling .of the sheet when access is desired thereto. ll-Thilethe sheets` may be so interloc-ked to they may be suitably supportedupon any desired type of holder, but thefusev ofthe retainer is found of im- I'iortancev as it retains the sheets in their properv spaced .relations 'in the` holder and prevents unauthorized "removal of any of the .other before" rreir removal.
`provided.atztli'e,lt'nv'er end of the sheet forms sheets byf"annoutwardtension thereon. The 'i terlOGked cannot be direct-ly "must be separated from each The protector a desiraloleftinlg'erholdl for grasping the sheet and. protects the index indicia thereon While forming 'mean "by which the removable reeord 'card ma Lv"Ibe s upportedupon the face of the sheet in connection with the holding ears providedfor that purpose. This protector is readily removable and may be appLed as desired.
While the specific construction/of the .sheets and means 'for mounting vthe same has been shown and described, the invention is not confined thereto aschanges and alterations may .beinade without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims.A v
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new'and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: t
l. ln an' index, the combination with a holder, of a pluralityof sheet carriers slidably mounted therein in parallel relation, sheets supported by said carriers and having projections from the face thereof adapted to engage an edge or' a parallel sheet and vspace the sheets in parallel overlapping relation, and a filler device coacting with the carrier upon the lowermost sheet to maintain the carriers positioned adjacent each other.
