ASSEMBLY DISK FOR ELASTIC MATERIAL.
Application filed June 25, 1927. Serial No. 201,306.
My invention has for its object. to provide a connector for one or more elastic members. Theinvention particularly has for its object to provide a means for securing rubber to an object.
The invention may be used in connection" that are to be interconnected. The construction selected is a come-back balloon, and
' illustrates the different embodiments of my invention. The V come-back balloon referred to is shown in the accompanying drawing and is described hereinafter.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the connector member greatly enlarged. Fig. 2 illustrates a top view of the connector showing the rubber string connectedto the connector and in position for the connection of therubber stem or neck of the balloon. Fig. 3 is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 2 after the balloon has been inflated and the neck has been twisted and illustrates the manner in which the balloon is secured tothe string. Fig. 4' is aside View of the balloon and the string and an edge view of the connector.
Inrthe form of construction shown in the drawing, the connector consists of a sheet material of relatively considerable stiffness, preferably out in the form of a disk or Washer. The disk is preferably punched from sheet fiber, and in punching, a central opening is formed and cuts are produced in the outer and inner edges of the disk in which the rubber elements that form the toy are secured.
The disk or washerl has a central opening 2. It is provided with a plurality of short cuts orslots 3. The cuts may be suitably located in the edges of the disk and so that when the elastic string 4 is drawn in the cuts 3, it will be pinched by the edges of the cuts. In order that thebody of the string may extend substantially from the center of the disk, a cut'is made in the central edge portion thereof, such as the out 5. Thus the rubber string 4 may be secured to the disk by being forced into one of the cuts 3 that is formed in the peripheral edge of the disk and drawn to the cut 5 that is formed in a central portion of the disk. In order to doubly secure the elastic string to the connector, it is secured in one of the cuts 3 and is then drawn over the disk and inserted in the other of the cuts 3 in the peripheral edge of the disk and then through the central openlng 2 and then drawn into the cut 5. This securely connects the elastic string and eliminates unsatisfactory tying of the rubber string which invariably causes tearing of the rubber unless the knotting is so loose that it invariably comes untied. The edges of the cuts operate to merely tightly pinch the rubber at a plurality of points and thus securely connects the elastic string to the connector or to any object to which the connector may be secured.
The particular connector shown in the drawing is also so constructed that it may be connected to a toy balloon. In making the connection with the toy balloon, the neck of the bladder is inserted through the opening 2. The balloon is then inflated and the neck of the balloon is secured to the connector in substantially the same manner that the string is connected to the connector.
In order to connect the balloon to the connector, the disk 1 is provided with a plurality of cuts in its edges into which the stem of the balloon may be drawnso that the stem will be pinched by the opposed edges of the cuts. In the particular construction shown, the outer, or peripheral, edge of the disk 1 is provided with the cuts 6 which are, preferably, deeper, that is, longer, than the cuts 3 and 5. They are thus formed owing to the quantity of rubber that is located in the neck of the balloon as compared with the cross dimensions of the rubber string. The width of the slots or cuts 6 that are thus formed may also be slightly greater than the width of the slots or cuts 3 and 5 for the same reason.- When it is desired to connect the connector 1 with the balloon, the neck is inserted through the opening 2 and after it is inflated it may be slightly twisted. The neck is then drawn through one of the cuts 6 and across to the other out 6. The arrangement is such that the string l protrudes from one side of the clislnwliicli may be referred to as the top side of the disk. The :stem of the balloon is drawn to one of the cuts 6, and to the opposite side of the balloon and then upwards to the top side and into the other out 6. When the stem has been sli htly twisted to close and prevent the escape of the air that is used to inflate the balloon, and the stem is secured in the cuts, untwisting of the ste'm erably, the cuts 3 are located in a line that torms-achord ot' the outer edge of the washer that located outside of the circle of the washer and also preferably the cuts 6 are located diametrically opposite to each other which positions the portion of the stem located. on the under side of the disk 1 v1n close contact withthe balloon, it being drawn into the opening 2 by the elasticity of that' portionot' the neck located on the upper side of he disk 1. This locates the base of i the neck o'l the balloon substantially in line withthe body ot' the string t where it terminates in the cut 5, it being crowded over tothis position by that portion oi the neck of the balloon located on the under side of the disk. Thus the balloon and the rubber string will be securely connected together without knotting or tying and without tearing the rubber of the string or the rubber of the balloon which gives a long life to the toy.
Iclaim;
