'the fixed guide associated with the intermediate or finishing rolls. Heretofore this has been accomplished by having a workman stand at the guide and open the same by means of a wrench to permit the leading end of each bar to pass through the guide,
and be gripped by the intermediate or finishing rolls, after which the guide was tightened up. By the present invention this manual operation is eliminated.
A preferred embodiment of the invention isillustrated in the accompanying drawings,

Referring to Figure 1, the reference numerals 2 and 3 designate a pair of rolling mills and 4a repeater associated therewith. The rolls of the rolling mill 2 have an oval pass 5 for rolling a square barinto anoval shape.
Interposed between the receiving end of the repeater and the rolling mill 2 is a twister T. This twister comprises a pair of parallel vertical guides 6, having T- shaped' slots 7- therein. Adjustably mounted on the guide 6 is a support 8- held in adjusted position by bolts 9 having T heads engaging in the slots-7 in the guides. Rotatably mounted in the support is a housing 10, having a worm gear 11,.on its periphery. This housing is Y adapted to be rotated by means of a worm 12, 1ournaled in the support. The housing has mounted therein a pair of cooperating rolls 13 and 14, the rolls being journaled in movable bearings 15, against which 0011 springs 16 act. These springs tend to move the sha the rolls 13 and 14 towards each other. The 65 rolls 13 and 14, have an oval pass 17. In operation, the housing 10 is turned so that the axes of the rolls 13 and 14 have a slight angle to the horizontal. The end of the bar after itleaves the horizontal pass 5 of the rolling mill 2 is received in the pass 17 of the rolls 13 and 14 and is given a slight twist. Thelength of the repeater 4 is such, that by thetime the 'end of the bar reaches the fixed guide 18 associated with the intermediateorfinishing rolls 3, the end of the bar has been turned through an angle of 90 so that the oval sectionhas its axis vertical. The rolls of the rolling mill 3 have a round ors uare pass 19, to receive the bar and the gul e 18 has a pass 20, which fits closely around the entering bar. Interposed be tweenthe guide 18 and the delivery end of the repeater is a pair of vertical rolls 21 having a vertical oval pass 22. These rolls (5 aremounted on vertical shafts 23 having -'-pinions 24 at their upper ends which mesh with each other. One of the shafts 23 has a bevel pinion 25 at its upper end which is engaged by a bevel pinion 26 on a shaft 27. The shaft 27is adapted to be driven by any suitable means through a ratchet clutch 28.

The leading end of abar enters the pass 22 of the-rolls 21 and the end of the bar is pushed through thepass of the guide 18 until the end of the bar is received in the pass 19 of the rolling mill 3. As soon as the rolls of the rolling mill 3 grip the end of the bar, they draw the bar through the guide 18 at a greater lineal speed than the normal peripheral speed of the rolls 21, so
that the latter are rotated by the bar at a greater eripheral speed than that at which f t 27 tends to drive them,- this being permitted by the ratchet clutch 28. In other. words, as soon as the rolls of the rolling mill 3 grip the bar, therolls 21 cease to function, The] purpose of these rolls, as before stated, we is merely to push the end hf the bar through the guide 18 until it is gripped by the rolls of the rolling mill 3.
,The rolls 21 have the usual springs 29 associated therewith for yieldingly holding the rolls in contact with each other.
.While I have shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention,'it will be understood that changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
,1. In a, repeater for rolling mills, a repeater, a rolling mill adjacent the delivery end of said repeater, a guide associated with said rollin mill for guiding the end of a bar from't e delivery end of said repeater into the pass of said mill, 2. pair of driven rolls interposed between the delivery end of vthe repeater and said guide for pushing the j end of the bar through said guide, means peater, a roll ng mill adjacent the receiving endof said repeater, a rolling mill adjacent the delive end of said repeater, a twister interposed hetween said rolling milland said receiving end of the repeater, a rolling mill adjacent the delivery end of said repeater, a guide associated with said rolling mill for guiding the end of a bar from the delivery end of said re ater into the pass of said mill, and means'interposed between the delivery end of. the repeater and said guide for forcing the'end of timber through said guide, substantially as described. I
3. The combination with a pair of rolling units, of a repeater guide through which a rod emerging from one unit is directed to the pass in the other unit, and a twister interposed between the first roll and the guide through which a rod emerging from the .first rolling unit must pass and by means of which the 7 rod is turned the necessary amount to be received bythe pass of the second unit, and a feeding means at the other end of-the .repeater guide between its terminal and the second rolling unit, said guide having a pass therethrough conforming to the pass in the second rolling unit and positioned to receive the endof a rod moving through the guide at the angle imparted thereto by the twister.
