i TURBI-NE CONSTRUCTION.
`Application led March 3, 1927.
considerable attention, and in the turbine constructions which have been 1n general use heretofore, it has usually been necessary to remove a. comparatively large portion of Athe turbine casing in order to obtain access to such blades. c c
1Itisaccordingly'an object of this invention to providea turbineconstruction where in` only a comparativelysmall part of the `turbine casing need be removed to obtain access to the return blades of the turbine. -fMore speciically, `it is anobject of this inlvention to provide a turbine "construction in `which the return blades ofthe turbine are `so mounted that they .may be removed with 1 i ai maximum of convenience from a comparatively small opening.
Further and more specifically, it is an ob- ,ject of this invention `to provide a turbine construction in which -asmall opening and removable closure therefor is providedv ad- Ajacent .Y the return blades through which opening access to the said blades may be attained.
`Still more specifically, it is an object of this invention `to provide in connection with the said opening, a mountingfor said return blades embracing outwardly removable retaining means accessible through 'said Opens ing for facilitating assembly or removal `of said blades through said Opening. p `Other and further objects of this inven- Ation will be apparent` as the same'becomes lbetterunderstood `from an examination of thespeeiiication land claims in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating preferred embodiment, in which,
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal fragmentary elevational view of the exterior of a turbine housing formingllapart of a turbine generatorfsea `*Fig is a`fragmentary"sectional view takenlonthe line 22 Of Fig. land having Serial No. 172,292.
i parts removed to show the character of the mountmg for the return blades,
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary View taken at the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, c
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional View taken at the line 4*-4 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view taken at the line 5--5 of Fig. 2.
Referring to thedrawings more particu larly, numeral 1 indicates generally the housing of the turbine which, in this instance, forms a part of a turbine generator set, the generator housing (not shown) joining thesaid housing l `at the right, as viewed in Fig. l. `The housing l is constructed of aligned cylindrical sectiOnsQ and 3 which `are joined together and an end or cover section i which closes the end "of the section 3 The latter section Opposite said section 2. 2 is cast with a wall 5 closing the end opposite the section 3. `A turbine wheel 6 and shaft therefor 7 is `mounted within; the housing l in `any suitable manner.
The turbine wheel.` 6, according to `this illustration, is provided at the side thereof and-along its outer periphery with circumferentially arranged buckets or blades S, said buckets extending axially from the si de of said Wheel and being reinforced by suitable rings 9 connected to the ends of the buckets. Each of the buckets 8 is provided with -a 4stem l0 which extends through `the `wheelG and is upset at the side of saidwhecl oppositeto the bucket to retain the latter. VThe wheel 6, in order that the buckets or blades 8 may be su'l'liciently spaced therefrom to permit the return. buckets to entend beneath said buckets 8, is provided with an annular shoulder ll. at its peripheral edge on which said buckets 8 are mounted.
The Wall 5 of `the section 2 is provided on its inner side with an arcuate ledge l2 which is provided as vieivcd in Fig. 5 with pcripherally spaced lugs 13 on which is mounted a removable mount la of the return buckets or `blades 15. The mount `lli is provided at its lower edge with an arcuate flange having a pair of peripherally spaced retaining gated heads (notshown) to facilitate operationand are `opera-ble by means of a tool `members in the form of screws 3 6 therein,
Which may be inserted radially with respect to thehousing 1 throughran opening 17 in Y. the periphery of the section 2 opposite the mount 14. The opening 17 need be no larger v.than that necessary to receivethevmount 14 j therethrough.
Steam is directed to the buckets 15fby a Lnozzle'18 mounted at a suitable angle in the section@ at one side of said opening 1 7. A suitable control valve 19 communicating at one side thereof With a passage 20 which in turn communicates VWith a source of steam Ysupply 21 Vis adapted to deliver steam through a l passageY 22,' communicating with the Votheruside of said valve,to said nozzle.
. The openingV 17 is providedjwith a closure plate 23 which inA thisinstance is shapedto provide a threaded opening therein forming an exhaust outlet 24. The plate 23 is mounted upon a suitable shoulder 25 and is held on 1 said'shoulder by bolts 26.' Y
It vWill bevobvious that by reason of the re- 'movable mount lll'which may be removed throughthe opening 17v after the closure plate 23has been removed, access to the tur- `-b ine'blades is greatly facilitated. i I1"'am.aware that many changes may be Y made Without departingV from the principles of this invention, and I do not Wish to be limited to the details shown and described.

6. In a turbine construction, a casinga lturbine Wheel mounted therein, said Wheel having axially extending buckets circumfereiitially arranged thereon, said casing having an opening and closure therefor adjacent the periphery of said wheel, and return buckets removably mounted Within said casing and arranged adjacent the inner periphery of the Wheel buckets, the mount for said return buckets having radially operable retaining means accessible through said opening.
7. In a turbine construction, a easing, a turbine Wheel mounted therein and having buckets thereon, said casing having an opening and closure therefor adjacent the pe riphery of said Wheel, rreturn buckets and mounting therefor within said casing, said mounting including means accessible through said opening for permitting the removal of said return buckets, and a nozzle mounted `-in said casing at one side of said opening and adapted to direct steam to said first buckets.
8. In a turbine construction, a casing, a turbine Wheel mounted therein having bucketsthereon, said casing having an opening and closure therefor adjacent the periphery of saidvvvheel, return buckets and mounting therefor Within said casing, said mounting including radially movable means accessible through said opening for permitting the rcinoval of said return buckets, and a nozzle mounted in said casing at one side of said opening and adapted to direct steam to said first buckets.
