It will be seen that the exhaust steam from the main exhaust pipe 5 as it passes through the pipe section 23 will impinge on the blades 25. In some instances it is not desirable to admit this steam to rotate the turbine wheel, therefore a flap valve 28 is provided in the pipe section 23, this valve being operated by a rod 29 which extends to the engine cab. It is obvious that this valve may be thrown into either of the positions shown in Fig. 4, in one of which it bypasses the steam around the rotor, while 1n the other it will allow the steam to actuate the wheel.
The operation of m invention is preferabhyr carried out as fo lows:
hen the locomotive is standing still, there is no exhaust steam from the main exhaust pi is 5 to operate the rotor, therefore a suitable valve (not shown) is opened to permit live steam from the injector mechanism to enter the port 26, the force of such steam obviously revolving said turbine wheel to operate the fan 18. The steam after acting upon the blades 24 passes out through the casing 22 through a passage way 30 and into the pipe section 23 and thus into the smoke stack. This operation of the turbine wheel is aided by the exhaust steam from the air compressor, the steam enterin the casing 22 through the inlet port 2 This steam is, however, not sufliciently great in amount to operate the rotor without the aid of other steam.
After the locomotive has started to run the exhaust steam from the exhaust pipe 5 is ample to operate the rotor, therefore the live steam from the injector is cut ofl. Regardless of the source of the steam the same will rapidly revolve the turbine wheel and cause the fan to be similarly actuated, therebly drawing the smoke and other gases from t e boiler tubes and discharging it into the duct 7 from whence it is forced into the fire box, either above or below a grate as is desired.
When it is desired to discontinue the o oration, it is accomplished by moving the valve 28 into the position shown in Fig. 4 in full lines, it previously having been in the dotted line position, and opening the passage way through the partition plate 20, the closure 31 for said opening being then dis- (not Copies of this patentmay be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the osed as shown in dotted lines of Fig. 1.

Under ordinary conditions the apparatus is in operation continuously during the travel of the locomotive, but when the same comes to rest, the apparatus may be cut ofi by actuating the flap valve 31 to open the partition.
While I have shown and described a specific apparatus in all of its details associated with a locomotive, it is obvious that I may, without departin from the spirit of my invention, utilize t e same in connection with fire-boxes of stationary boilers descriptions.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is obvious that a very simply con structed smoke consuming1 apparatus has been produced and that t e same may be very effectively used in connection with railway locomotives. Various changes may be made in the form and proportion of the various parts of the apparatus to accommodate its use to locomotives of different types and sizes.
I claim:
In a device of the class described comprising a casing having an opening in its side adjacent one end, a vertical pipe section having an opening in the side for communication with the opening in the casing, a twopart rotor in said casing one art ing adapted to be engaged y fluld passing through said pipe section, a valve in the pipe section to selectively direct said fluid through the pipe section or into the casing against one part of the rotor, and ani et pipe into the casing adapted to direct fluid against the other part of the rotor, the inner wall of the casing adjacent the last mentioned part of the rotor having a passage way out therein leading into the first mentioned opening to provide an outlet for fluid from the inlet pipe, whereby to actuate the rci-tor by fluid from different sources of P Y- In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin.
