This invention relates to a sounddeadening casing for. a ortable typewritmg machine,- in which 1; e machine is completely enclosed within the casing except for the keyboard, which protrudes through the wall.
In my a plicatlo'n No. 17 ,554, filed March here is shown a casing for the purpose of deadening the noise of typewriter operation. In said invention the carriage of the machine is controlled from the outside of the casin by means of a handlever at the keyboar the lever being operatively connected to the 'line space devices of the carriage.
In this invention there is provided improved mechanism for controlling the movements of the carriage from the outside of the casing. The carriage-release mechanism comprises a bail-piece mounted in the cas ng and operatively connected to a depressible exterior button mounted on the front wall of the casing. Said bail-piece extends sub-' stantiallythe full width of the casing and engages the carriage-release lever when operated by the button. The latter may be held back by the left hand while the right hand manipulates the exterior carriage-driving handle to run the carriage to and fro without opening the casing.
Another feature of this invention relates to margin-gage devices or=tabulating devices for locatin the carriage. Upon a bail is an adjustab e stop-device, co-operative with a fixed stop on the carriage, in such a manner that when the automatic stop-button is depressed the bail-piece carrying the stopdevice is swung in front of.the stop 'on the carriage simultaneouslywith the releafe of the carriage. The two buttons are operatively connected, so that they will simultaneously operate when the automatic stopbutton is depressed,thus -permitting the car riage to move to position.
Another feature of this invention relates .to'means for facilitating the insertion of the machine in the casing and the removal therefrom. To this end, thefront 'wall of the casing is provided with a slot the full width of the keyboard extension, to permitthe placing of the machine in. the casing vertically. The 0 ning atthe top of the slot between the yboard and the top of the front wall is closed by means of a felt-lined front'plate. Thefront plate is supported with stu casing. The detachable front plate also serves to fasten the machine down upon its sound-deadening bed of thick felt.
Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.

This invention is illustrated in connection with an Underwood portable typewriting machine, and is for the purpose of deadening the noise arising from the operation thereof.
In small portable machines of this kind it is sometimes desirable to remove the machine from the casing and then pack it into the portable casing, which forms a part of the equipment usually supplied with the machine. For this reason, it is' advantageous to insert the'machine in the casing and .remove it therefrom with .little or no alteration thereof, and also to simplify the operation of installing the machine for use in the casing. The casing comprises a bodypart '10 and a cover 11 rockably mounted on the body-part b mansof hinges 12. I In this manner, the machine is placed upon a base board 15 horizontall and'then the. opening at the top of the key and is closed by means of a frontplate16 which also holds the machineinxglace. In order to prevent the emission of sound through the front plate 16, the same is provided with a layer 21 of sound-deadening material, glued or otherwise secured thereto. The lower edge 22 of the plate 16 is designed to fit the outline of the upper edge of the front plate of the machine.
In the Underwood machine, there is provided a carriage 23 mounted upon rails, and the carriage is arranged for letter-space travel at each'key depression. In order that the carriage may be returned after each line of typing, there is provided mechanism which may comprise a hand-operable lever 24 fulcrumed on the front wall of the casing. The lever 24 is operatively connected to a shaft 25 by means of a gear 26 engaging with a pinion 27 fast to saidshaft, which carries fast thereto a drum 28 around which a cord 29 is wound. Upon depressing the lever 24 the drum 28 will be caused to rotate, thus winding the cord therearound and pulling on the carriage toward the drum. The cord'29 is shown connected to the carriage at 30, but obviously the same could be connected to the line-space lever 31, as illustrated in my above-mentioned application No. 17,554, in which other mechanism is shown for the purpose of improving the operation of the carriage-return mechanism hereinbefore described.
In order to further eliminate the necessity of opening the cover to control the movement of the carriage, there is provided mechanism whereby the carriage may be released from the escapement mechanism and then positioned by means of the lever 24.
In the Underwood machine there is provided an escapement gear 32 r otatably mounted on the frame thereof. There is also provided a pinion 33 fast to the gear, and the pinion operatively meshes with a rack 34 which is releasable from the pinion by'means of a lever 35. The lever 35 is rockably mounted upon the platen-shaft 36 and engages the rack-supporting arms 37 at 38, the supporting arms being fulcrumed at 39 upon the platen-frame. In this invention there is provided mechanism for releasing the lever 35 from the outside. of the casing. Said mechanism may comprise a bail piece 40 rockably mounted on a shaft 41 fast to the end walls 42 of the casing, in a manner to depress the lever 35 when a button or fingerplece 43 collapsibly mounted on the front wall is operated. Said button 43 is operatively connected to the bail-piece 40 by means of linkage which may include an arm 44 fast to the bail-piece and a rod 45 fast to the button and connected to the arm 44 at '46..
Another feature of this invention relates to automatic means for positioning the car- I riage relatively ,to the printing point, by
simply depressing a button or finger-piece 47 mounted on the front wall of the casing.
To this end, there is provided a bail-piece 48, rockably mounted on the shaft41. The bail-piece 48 is preferably of rectangular cross-section having a series of slots 49 cut therein to form a rack for receiving a stopclip-5O resiliently held thereom Upon depressing the button 47 which is fast to a rearwardly-extending rod 51, the ball-piece 48 is swung on its supporting shaft 41 from a position shown in Figure 3 to that shown in Figure 4, in which the bail-piece v48 13 shown swung downwardly by the action of an arm 52 which forms an integral part thereof, and is operated by the'rod 51 connected thereto at 53. By swinging the bail 48 to the position shown in Figure 4, the,
stop-clip is brought in the path ofa st0pbutton 47, both bails will be'rendered etfective, but when the button, 43 is operated, then only the bail 40 will be swung to release the carriage.
It will be understood that in order to further increase the efficiency of the sounddeadening casing, the front, rear and side walls thereof and the cover may be covered with layers of sound-deadening material, and that the machine may, by the same or any other method, be insulated from the baseboard and secured thereto by meansof a supporting member, the same or similar to that disclosed in my said a plication.
The carriage may be quickly positioned from the outside of the casing by simply depressing the carriage-release button wlth one hand while the carriage-return handle is operated with the other hand against the pull of the carriage-feeding"spring which draws the carriage in the opposite direction.
