IMPROVEMENT I N BURNISHER-HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 67,953, dated September 21, 1875; application filed August 19, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER SwALLoW, of Beloit, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burnisher-Holders and burnishing-block for burnishing boot and shoe heels; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the ac. companying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a holder or arm and burnisher, arranged with straps and bars connecting the burnisher and handle, so as to give the burnisher a side motion across the lifts by a side motion of the handle, as hereinafter described; and it further consists in a shoe of peculiar construction, to hold and adjust the burnishers.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings. Figure 1 represents in perspective the arm or holder and burnisher. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal vertical section through the same.

Fig. 3 represents in perspective a burnisher detached.

A represents an arm or holder, constructed of two plates, with blocks or studs a, to hold them at a requisite distance from each other, each plate having dovetail grooves in the lower edges, to hold the burnisher B, which has corresponding dovetails on the sides, as at b, Fig. 3. At therear end of the burnisher B or its shoe B there is a slot, 0, out out to receive the bar (1, which is coupled to the burnisher by a pin, e,-so as to form a flexible joint. Said bar 01 is connected by a pin, to the lower end of the straps G, which are pivoted at their upper end 9 to the plates of the arm A, in such a positipn as to allow the lower end of the straps O to oscillate in the opening A betweenthe two plates of the arm or holder A. D represents a handle, pivoted at h between the two plates of the arm or'holder A, the pivot h being near the forward end, so as to admit of a side vibration of the handle. E

represents a connecting-rod, coupled to the handle D at i, above the pivot h, and to the straps O at 70, below the pivot g.

It will thus be seen that the side vibration of the handle D will force back the rod E, I

causing the lower ends of the straps (J to move lengthwise ofthe opening A, thus moving the bar d and burnisher B, giving to the latter its movements across the lifts of the heel, at the will of the operator, While being passed in a rotary motion around the heel. side plates of the arm A is extended in rear of the other, and has a slot, 1, through which passes a bolt, m, that secures the holder A to a slotted plate, F, that can be secured or pivoted to a bench or machine. Between the arm or holder A and the plate F is a gib-plate, n, havingtransverse flanges, for the purpose of holding the arm or holder A in position,'and

to admit of its being adjusted to the different sizes and heightsof heels.

The shoe B, besides havingdove-tail grooves formed on its sides to fit the groves in the plates of the arm A, has a dovetail groove cut in its lower face to admit a stone or metallic burnisher, B, the projection 10 fitting into a corresponding groove in the burnisher B. The

forward end. of the shoe B is provided witha set-screw, g, which passes through the lug 1 formed on the shoe, and forces the burnisher B against the projection 19, and holds it firmly in position.

In Fig. 3 is shown a burnisher made preferably of metal, with dovetail grooves cut on its side, so' as. to dispense with a shoe, as shownin the other figures.

, Vihat I claim as my invention isl. The holder or arm A, provided with the bar d, straps G, connecting-rod E, connecting the burnisher with the handle D, as and for the purpose specified.

2. The shoe B, with its guiding-grooves, holding-jaws, and slot for the bar-connection, substantially as and for the purpose described and represented;
