. My invention relates to improvements in grease cups, of'the t pe having an expressing plug provided with threaded connectlon with the cup, the cup belng adapted for use on a locomotive side rod.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide novel means for releasablyv holding the plugto limit its unscrewing movement due to j arring'to which it may be sub-- jected.
A further object of my invention is to provide novel holding means of the kind described, which issimple, cheap, strong, durable, not liable to get out of order, which is easy to manipulate, and efiicient 1n 1ts operation.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which lllustrates the preferred embodiment of my invention, I 1 p Fig. 1 is a top view of'my improved grease cup shown mounted on a portion of a locomotive side rod.

which is interiorly threaded and has its bottom end fastened, as by welding 2, at 1ts periphery to the top of a locomotive side rod 3, which has a grease conveying hole 4 communicating with a discharge opening 5 in the bottom of the cup 1.
The cup 1 is adapted to contain grease or other lubricating material 6, which is expressed through the opening 5 by a threaded plug 7 fitted in the threaded cup 1. The center and top of the plug 7 may have a square recess 8 adapted to receive a wrench, not shown, with which the plug may be turned.
For releasably limiting the turning movement of the, plug 7 in the cup 1, so as to prevent the latter from unscrewing, due to jarring action to which it is subjected, I provide a U shaped member 9, one arm of which is fitted and securely fastened in a vertical hole 10 provided eccentrically in the upper end of the lug 7.
The other arm of t e U shaped member 9 is disposed beyond the periphery of the cup l around' which the said arm is revoluble and adapted for movement with the plug 7 lengthwise of the cup.
For engaging the outer arm of the U shaped member 9 to releasably limit the turning movement of the plug 7, I provide on the cup 1 limiting means, which may be one or more springs 11, one end of each of which isfastened securely to the cup, as by a stud 12-of rectangular form, which extends upwardly from the top of the cup 1 through a rectangular opening in the inner end of the spring 11, the upper'end of the stud 12 being upset so as to securely hold the spring against the top of the cup.
The outer end of each spring 11 has a V shaped portion 13 which projects beyond the periphery of the cup 1 into the path of the outer arm of the U shaped member 9. This projecting portion 13 of the spring is adapted to engage the said outer arm so as to hold it from revolving in a direction which would permit the plug 7 to unscrew.
Upon turning the plug 7 in either direction the outer arm of the member 9 will strike and force inwardly the outer ends of the springs 11, two of these being shown in the drawing, thus permitting the plug to be manually screwed inwardly or outwardly but limiting the accidental revolving movement of the plug.
, In the operation of the invention, grease 6 is placed in the cup 1, and the plug 7 is then screwed into the cup to a position in Which grease will have been forced through the opening 5 and hole 4. In such screwing of the plug 7 the outer arm of the member 9 will press inwardly and pass the springs 11.
The V shaped portions 13 of the latter will engage and stop the unscrewing movement of the plug due to the vibration to which it may be'subjected, such vibration being insufficient to cause the member 9 to press the springs inwardly so as to allow the outer arm of the member 9 to pass them.
If desired the outer arm of the member 9 may be resilient so as to afford a spring action in itself, to enable the operatorto unscrew the plug, when it is desired to refill the cup with grease. Such spring action of the outer arm will also relieve the strain upon the springs 11.

What I claim is 1. A grease cup having a discharge openthreaded connection with said cup, a U shaped member having one arm fastened to r and movable with saidplug and having its other arm revoluble around and movable lengthwise of said cup with said blug, and means on said cup adapted to be yieldingly engaged by said other arm for releasably limiting the rotation of said plug.
2. A grease cup having a discharge opening, a rotary plug fitted in and having threaded connection with said cup, a U shaped member having one arm fastened to and movable with said plug and having its other arm revoluble around and movable mg, a rotary plug fitted in and having lengthwise of said cup with said plug, and a spring on said cup extending beyond the periphery thereof into the path and adapted to releasably limit the revolving movement of said other arm.
3. A grease cup having a discharge opening, a rotary plug fitted in and having threaded connection with said cup, a U shaped member having one arm fastened to and movable with said plug and having its other arm resilient and revoluble around and movable lengthwise of said cup with said plug and stop means on and extending beyond'the periphery of said cup into the path of said resilient arm for releasably limiting the revoluble movement of said other arm.
