IMPROVEMENT IN CHANDELIERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No; 167,92 l, dated September 21, 1875; application filed August 1'2, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK MGLEW'EE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Chandelier, of which the following is a specification Figure 1 represents a side view, partly insecti0n,of my improved chandelier. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

This invent-ion has for its object to produce a new chandelier, in which, by a peculiar arrangcment of a frame carrying crystal reflectors, a brilliant and novel effect can be obtained.

The invention consists in combining with a wire frame, which carries a series of prismheads, or crystals, gas-burners that are outside of such frame and crystals, and also burners that are within such frame and crystals, as hereinafter more fully described.

In the accompanying drawing, the letter A represents a vertical gas-pipe, which serves as a support for my improved chandelier, having at or near its lower part a series of projecting branch pipes, at a and b b, with burners dd and e 0, respectively, on the ends thereof. B is a wire frame-work of suitable style and shape, made to secure and hold in proper position a series of crystals or prism-heads, G O, which are by preference made of cut glass, such crystals or prism-heads being firmly and rigidly attached to the wire frame-work to completely cover and conceal the frame. a, burners d, branch tend outside of and beyond the frame-work, while the branchpipes b, that carry the burners e, do not extend to the wire frame. so that when the burners are' lighted flames will be within and other flames without the wire frame-work that carries the crystals.

In this way a very peculiar but beautiful effect will be produced, as the light from the inner burners 6 will pass through the crystals, while that from the outer burners will be in part reflected by the crystals, and thus, by simple means, a compound transmitted and reflected light will be obtained. The effect will also be very marked if the inner lights 0. are entirely omitted and the outer lights only employed, because the flames of the outer burners will be colored and diffused by the reflecting-surfaces of the prism-heads. These prism-headsor crystals may be of suitable varying colors of glass or similar transparent or translucent material.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the wire-frame B,

carrying the crystals (J, with the branch pipes a and burners d,'of a chandelier, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
