This invention relates to operating mechanism for door extractors such as employed for removing and replacing the doors of coke ovens. Such door extractors are usu ally mounted upon a suitable carriage or car which'runs on a track which extends along the front of a row of ovens so that the carriage may be positioned in front of any oven from which a door is to be extracted, the carriage being provided with a suitable door handling device such as a ram mounted for movement toward and from the oven. The door handling dc .e is providcd'with suitable means for engaging and lifting the door and for pulling the door oi'itwardly from out of its frame. In ren'ioviug the door it is pulled outwardly to freeit from its frame and in replacingthe door it is moved into the frame and pushed into tight engagement therewith.
Since the doors are usually quite heavy and are sealed in their frames during the operation of the oven to prevent escape of gases considerable power is required to strip a door from its frame. lVhen the extractor mechanism is hand operated it is necessary in order to enable suificient power tobe applied to strip the doors to provide'power multiplying devices between the hand wheel anddoor engaging member which cause the movement of the engaging member to be very slow.
It is the object ofthe present invention to provide a hand operating mechanism by which the necessary power may be applied at such times as is necessary or desirable in the extraction or replacement of thedoors and by which the door handling member may be moved rapidly after the door is freed from its frame to quickly shift the door clear of the oven structure, or, in replacing the doors, to. move the door quickly into its frame.
The following description and accompanying drawings set forth in detail certain means embodying the. invention, the disclosed means, however,lconstituting but one of the various mechanical forms in'which the principle of the invention may beemployed.
Reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which Fig. 1 is a top plan of g. 1 looking inthe direction indicated by the arrows; Fig. 4 is a section on line ll of Fig. 8 looking 111 the direction illCllcated by the arrows; Fig. 5 is an axial secmen through the hand wheel and planetarygearln structure of the carriage on which the door extractor is mounted is indicated by the numeral 1 and mounted inthe superstructure 1 there is a reciprocable ram 2gsupported upon rollers 3 and held in place thereon by guide rollers 4:. The ram 2 is mounted for movement toward and from the door and carries suitable door engaging books not shown. to the top thereof a rack 5 which is engaged by a pinion 6 carried by a shaft 7 extending transversely over the top of the ram and journaled inchannel frame members 8 which extend along opposite sides ofthe ram. The pinion G is fixed to the shaft 7 and is driven through a large gear 9 also fixed to the shaft 7 which meshes with a small gear 10 fixed to a countershaft llejournaled in the frame members 8 above and to one side ofthe shaft 7. 12 is mounted on the carriage at one side of the frame members 8 and the countershaft 11 extends through the wall of the cab and is adapted to be operated by a hand The ram 2 has attached An operators cab wheel 15: mounted upon the inner end therei of within the cab. loosely mounted upon theinner end of, the shaft 11 and isprovided with a suitable handle 14- by-which it may be turned. The hub 15 of the hand wheel has an outwardly projecting flange with a gear 16 formed thereon, the gear 16 meshing with a larger gcar17 rotatably mounted on a stub shaft 18 carried by an arm 19, which projects radially from the shaft 11 and has a collar 20 fixed to the shaft. A' planetary gear casing 21 encloses the gears 16 and 17 and the the arm 19. The casing 21 is provided adjacent the periphery with a sliding pin 26 which extends from one side to the other of the casing. The pin 26 is provided with an outwardly projecting handle 27 which is movable in a slot 28 in the periphery of the casing. By means of the handle 27 the pin 26 may be projected to either side of the casing 21. li hen the pin 26 is projected inwardly it extends into the hand wheel 13, lies in the path of a spoke of the hand wheel so that the casing 21 will be turned with the hand wheel. By shifting the pin 26 in the opposite direction, it may be projected into an opening 29 formed in the wall of the cab 12 locking the casing 21 against rotation.
When the planetary gear casing 21 is locked to the hand wheel, the gear 17 meshing with the internal gear 25 and with the gear 16 on the hub of the hand wheel is locked against rotation causing the arm 19 and the shaft 11 to rotate with the hand wheel. l Vhen the planetary gear casing 21 is locked against rotation by engagement with the pin 26 in the opening 29, the gear 17 is rotated by the gear 16 when the hand wheel is turned and is caused to travel around in the casing on the internal gear 25 causing the shaft 11 to be rotated in the same direction as the hand wheel but at much slower rate of speed. When the ram 2 is being moved up to a door, the casing 21 will be locked to the hand wheel so that a fairly rapid movement may be imparted to the ram. After the ram is engaged with the door. the casing 2l'will be locked against rotation by a movement of the pin 26 in the opening; 29 so that upon rotation of the hand wheel in a direction to strip the door, the rotation of the shaft 11 will be at a much lower rate of speed than the rotation of the hand wheel 13, causing a corresponding inerease'in the power applied to the door to strip it from its frame. As soon as the door has been loosened, the locking pin 26 may be shifted to lock the casing 21 to the hand wheel so that upon continued rotation of the hand wheel, the door may be rapidly moved to a position clear of the oven structure. In replacing: the door, the'casing 21 will be locked to the hand wheel until the door has been moved into its frame whereupon'the easing may be locked against rota-- tion to decrease the rate of movement of the ram and correspondingly increase the force applied to the door to push it into tight engagement with its frame.
raving described my invention, I claim- 1, In a device of the character described, a supporting frame, a shaft mounted on the frame, a hand wheel rotatably mounted on the shaft, a planetary gear casing rotatably mounted upon the shaft alongside the hand wheel, said hand wheel having a hub projecting into the casing, a gearfixed to the hub within the casing, an internal gear fixed to said casing, an arm fixed to said shaft and extending within said casing, a gea r carried by said arm and meshing with said internal gear and with the gear on thehnb and means carried by said casing for locking the same to the hand wheel or to the frame.
2. In a device of the character described, a supporting frame, a driving shaft rotatably mounted in the frame. hand wheel rotatably mounted on said shaft, a planetary gearing interposec between the hand wheel and shaft and comprising a ring gear rotatable upon said shaft, a central gear and an intermediate gear meshing with the ring gear and central gear, the central ear and the intermediate gear being Cfif" l one by the shaft and one by the hand wheel, and a locking member carried by said ring gear by which said ring gear may be locked to the hand wheel or to the frame.

In a device of the character described, supporting frame, a shift-able member 1110d11[@(l on the frame. means for operating said shiftable member comprising a shaft and means operated by the shaft for moving said member, a hand whee-l rotatably mounted on the shaft, a member rotatably mounted on the shaft adjacent the hand wheel, an internally toothed gear carried by said rotatable member, a'gear fixed to the hand,
wheel, an arm fixed to said shaft, a' gear carried by said arm and meshing with the internal gear and. the gear fixed to the handwhcel, and a shiftable locking member car ried by said rotatable member for locking said rotatable member to the handwheel and for locking the same to the frame against movement in either direction.
4. In a device of the character described, a supporting frame, a ram mounted. on. the frame, means for operating said ram comprising a driving shaft and means operated by the shaft for moving said mm, a hand. wheel rotatably mounted on the shaft, a planetary gear casing rotatalily mounted upon the shaft alongside the handwheel, said hand wheel having a hub projecting into the casing and having a gear thereon within the casing, an internal gear fixed to said casing, an arm fixed to the shaft and extending within said casing, a gear carried by said arm and meshino' with said hub an d internal gears, and a shiftable locking member car ried by said casing and movable either into en gagement with said handwheel or with the supporting frame.
