This invention is a book carrier adapted more especially for use by school children, y
and the purpose of the invention is primarily to provide in a very simple and economical construction a. thoroughly sanitary device for the carrying of books. y
In many of the larger cities and particularly in the tenement districts, school lchildren are not permitted to employ book straps.

Book carriers made of metal have heretofore been suggested, but, in every instance, they are relatively expensive and embody atleast several parts,'amoiig which are generally included tubular elements which obviously are unsanitary as proper cleaning of the interior of tubes in a construction of this character is practically impossible.
The present invention, in contradistinction, may be made of a single piece of wire bent to form a bail. At the base of the bail are formed integral clamping jaws which cooperate with the oppositefaces of the bail to clamp books between the respective jaws and the bail.
In one of its practical forms, the holder is made of two pieces of wire twisted together to form the bail and to secure the two lengths of wire permanently to one another by a simple twisting operation. At the base of the bail, each piece of wire is carried laterally to form in the central portion of the wire length a clamping jaw including coils which impart considerable inherent resiliency to the jaws. The free ends of the wires terminate at the top of the bail and are introduced into the opposite ends of a wooden or metal handle, although, in practice, they may be soldered, welded together, or twisted together at this point.
The construction is unusually simple mechanically, may be economically manufactured and is thoroughly sanitary. Furthermore, it is highly efficient in the carrying out of its intended purposes and has a relatively large capacity for the carrying of books.

The accompanying drawing illustrates one practical embodiment of the invention, but the construct-ion therein shown is to vbe understood as illustrative, only, and not as de fining the limits of the invention. f fU The drawing shows the holder of the present invention in perspective supported therein.
Referring to the drawing, l designates a bail, Q a handle therefor and 3 and 3a cooperating clamping jaws in which are formed coil spring elements 4. and 4a.
In the preferred manner of making the device, two lengths of wire are employed` Each piece of wire is bent to form midway of its length a jaw shaped as shown at 3 and 3a. At the base of the jaws, the wires are bent to form the. coils 4 and 4a and are then brought together at the points 5, and the remainder of the length of the wire is twisted to form the opposite vertical sides 6 of the bail. l The upper ends of these opposite sides are bent toward one another as shown at 7 and forced into the opposite ends of a handle 2. f
This is the preferred form of construction.. although, in practice, the handle 2 may be dispensed with, and the portions 7 of the wire may be made longer, so'as to overlap one another and may be twisted or soldered together.
It is also within the purview of this invention to form the whole construction from a single piece of wire` and if the free ends of the wire meet either within the handle 2 or be coiled around an uninterrupted portion of the wire extending across the top of the bail. I have not considered it necessary to show these alternative forms of the inwith one book l Cil vention, as they will be apparent to. anyone skilled in the art.
The jaws 3 and 3 are preferably bent as shown in the drawings, so that when they are sprung apart to their maximum extent, the portions 8 and 8` of the respective jaws will be substantially vertical, while the portions 9 and 9la of said jaws will be substantially horizontal. jaws are deflected outwardly as shown at l() and 10a to provide with the bail a re-entrant mouth in order to Vfacilitate the introduction of books between 'these parts.
The structure is unusually simple, may be manufactured at a minimum cost and 'embodies at most two pieces oi' wire and an attached handle, while -in `simplest Yform, it may be made of a one piece integral construction.
I placeparticularstress upon the twisting of the wires together to 'form the sides 6 of theibail as this arrangement renders the bail very rigid as isessential for the proper 4functioning of the construction particularly when books are carried in only one side of' the bail as shown in the drawing.
The drawing illustrates the invention in its preferred practical' orm, but the invention `is to be 4understood asfully commensurate with the appended claims.
Having thus fully described the invention,
The upper ends of theV what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a boolrholder, a lpair of wire loops constituting opposed clamping jaws, the wires from which said loops are formed being provided at thebases of the loops with spring coils andthe wires of the two loops `being extended from said coils toward one another and twisted together to form upstanding members constituting the side members oi Va bail, the upper portions of said side membersy being bent towarc'l one another and secured together to form a han-l dle to the bail.
2. In a book holder, a pair oi' wire loops constituting opposed `clamping jaws, the wires from which said loops are formed being provided at the bases of the loops with spring coils and the wiresof the two loops being extendedirom said coils toward one another and twisted together' to form upstanding members constituting the side members oit a bail, the upper portions of said side members beingbent toward one another, a handle member provided in its opposite ends with holes into which the bent portions of the bail extend to anchor the side portions of the bail to the handle.
