PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES CAMPBELL,'OF MONTROSE, CALIFORNIA.
BRICK HAMMER.
Application filed July 3, 1926. Serial No. 120,335.
The present invention relates to a hammer and particularly that type which 1s comused by brick layers.
inexpensive in its construction that may be easily and quickly attached to and detached from the blade of the brick hammer.
The blade of the hammer used by brick 10 layers soon becomes dull-and it is necessary blacksmith in order to This consumes considerable time and furthermore the blade of the hammer wears away rather quickly, thus purchase of'a new hammer. lVith my improved blade attachment, it is possible to eliminate these difliculties.
Another very important ObJQCt of the invention lies in the provision ofa detachable to take the same to a blade of this nature, which will prove thoroughly efficient and reliable in use, strong and durable, and otherwise Well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
lVith the above and numerous other obiects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is an elevational view of a hammer, embodying the features of my invention, 7
Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the blade of the hammer, and
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of the auxiliary blade attachment.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the numeral 5 denotes a handle which is received in the socket 6 of the hammer proper. On the socket 6 there is formed in the usual manner the head 7 and the blade 8. In the present instance, the blade is provided with a V-shaped pocket 9 and a pair of V-shaped notches 10 in the centers of the bifurcations formed by the pocket 9.
The auxiliary blade indicated generally by the letter A is of a double wedge formation, and on one wedge portion, that is, one of the sloping faces of one wedge portion, has a block 11 in the form of a wedge.
One wedge portion of the auxiliary blade A is inserted in the pocket 9 whilethe wedge block or blocks 11 are receivablein the notches l0. wedged into tight engagement with the blade 8. Obviously, these auxiliary blades may be manufactured at a very small cost, so that when they become worn, they may be thrown away and replaced with anew one, in a much more economical manner than with the ordinary method of resharpening the blade '8.
It is thought that the construction, utility,
" and adxantages of this invention will now be clearly understood by those skilled in this art without; a more detailed description thereof. The present embodiment has been disclosed merely by way of example, since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated statement of the invention and the above description. Numerous changes in the details of construction may be resorted to with out departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is In combination, a hammer provided with a blade, the end of the blade being provided with a V-shaped pocket, the V-shaped pocketbifurcating the end of the blade, the furcations being provided with V-shaped notches and an auxiliary blade having a Thus theauxiliary blade is as desirable in the pair of wedge-shaped terminals and a wedgeshaped block extending laterally from one of the terminals, said one of the terminals being receivable in the pocket and the block being receivable in one of the notches the V-shaped formation of the pocket and the.
notches and the wedge shaped formation of the terminals and the block being the sole means for retaining the auxiliary blade in the end of the first mentioned blade. I In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
