Application filed September 7, 1927. Serial No. 217,896.
This invention relates to a simple construction of pneumtic door-check adapted.,.to be mounted within a door-frame adjacent to the rabbet or stop against which the door fits when closed, with its plunger projecting beyond the rabbet or stop into the path of closing movement of the, door so as to receive the impact of the latter to checkits movement sufiic iently to prevent noisy slainming against the rabbet or stop and conseuent jars. g
It is the object of this invention to provide a pneumatic door-check, of the'kind above mentioned, the construction of WillOl] has been greatly simplified and reduced to a minimum number of parts which may be produced and assembled at exceedingly low cost, so as to provide a device which may be marketed through .chain stores, such as the socalled five and ten cent'st'or'es, and similar distributing agencies.
The invention has for a further objeet to provide in connection with a pneumat c door-check of the kind above referred to in which the construction and relation of the parts are such that no particular skill .18 required to properly position the device n operative relation to the door-frame and its rabbet or stop, and whereby when mounted on the frame the operative stroke of its plunger is automatically limited in such manner as to assure the production of an adequate air pocket at the rear end of its cylinder and intermediate such end and the piston so that no amming or the piston against the rear end orthe cylinder can'oc cur, while at the same time an adequate elastic cushion produced by the compression of air within said air pocket is provided suihcient to assure checking of the door movement without preventing, however, its proper closing and latching. 7
Other objects of this invention, not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understoodtrom' the following detailed description of the same. V
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the novel doorcheck of this invention shown in operative relation to a door-frame and its rabbet stop and with the door open, said latter parts being shown in section; 2 is an end elevation of the device, looking in thedirection of the arrow in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a their interior an 1 1, having one or more. notches 15 longitudinal section of the device shown in connection with a door-frame and its rab bet stop, and with the door shown in closed relation to the door-frame; Fig. dis a de tail transverse section, taken on line 44 in Fig. 8; Fig; 5 is another transverse section, taken on line 5' 5 in Fig. 1.
Siniilai' .c'hara cters of reference are employed in all of the hereinabove described views, to indicate corresponding parts,
Referringto said drawings, the reference character 1 indicates the cylinder of the device. This cylinder is drawn from metal stock to form an integral tubular body having a closed rear end 2 preferably of semi spherical shape. The openeiid ofsaid cylindci' 1 is provided around its periphery with outwardly projecting circuniierentially spaced apart lugs or tongues 3. The open end of said. cylinder 1 is adapted to be closed by a combined cylinder head and supporting bracket of integral construction, the saine comprisinga head body 1, from one side of which; extends, preferably in the plane of said head, a bracket arm 5 from the free end of which and at right angles to which projects a forwardly extending foot-piece or base -6 suitably perforated forthe reception and'passage of fastening screws 7 ;-extending around the periphery of'said head body 4 so as to terminate at each side of said bracket arm 5 is an annular rearwardly projecting skirt-flange 8; and head body 4 is provided in properly spaced relation around the same and adjacent to its periphery with a series of slots or perforations 9. In order to stiffen thecombined cylinder head and supporting bracket at the juncture of its bracket arm 5 and footpiece 6, the latter parts are indented across gle to provide integral stiffening or reenforcing ribs 10. Said head body d is provided with a centralopening 11 to provide for the mOVemeilt therethrough of a piston stem 12. I Secured upon the inner end of said piston stem 12, against an enlargement or shoulder 13 with which the latter provided, is a metal piston disk in its periphery to provide air-passage. Backed by said piston-disk 14 and secured by a retaining washer 16 over which the inner end of the piston stem 12 isriveted, is a cupped piston member 17 preferably made of leather or similar more or less flexible material.
After the forward or free end of the piston stem 12 is passed through the opening 11 of the head body 4, a flanged seating disk 18is affixed to the outer extremity of the piston stem 12, and secured in seated relation to and upon said seating disk 18 is a resilient buffer 19, preferably made of soft rubber.
After the piston structure and cylinder head structure have been assembled together in the same manner and in the relation above indicated, a spiral compression spring 20 is seated Within the closed end of the cylinder 1, and the pistonanember 17 is entered through the outer end of said cylinder and in engagement with said spring 20. The head body 4; is now engaged with the open portion of thecylinder by telescoping the skirt-flange 8 if the former over the latter, and with the lugs or tongues 3 of the cylinder projecting exteriorly through the slots or perforations 9 of said head body 4, whereupon the free ends of said lugs or tongues are'clinched over the latter, thus firmly and securely uniting the various parts of the doorcheck structure in operative assembled relation.
The reference character 21 indicates a door-frame provided with a rabbet or stop 22 against which the door 23 is stopped when moved to closed relation to the frame.
To mount the door-check device upon the door-frame 21 in operative relation to the door 23, the'foot-piece or base 6 is placed against the door-frame with its free edge aligned with thestop face of the rabbet 22; the foot-piece or base 6 is madeof a predetermined distance of projection outwardly or forwardly of the head body 4, so that when its outer edge is registered with the stop face of the rabbet 22 as above stated, the device will be automatically located in proper operative position, so that the operative in- 'ward stroke of the piston will be predetermined for the purposes already hereinabove stated; this feature of my invention is of considerable importance since it allows the users, without any special mechanical skill, to attach or mount the device with full assurance that the same will be in proper operative relation to the frame and its door, since the bracket itself provides a positioning guide adapted to so locate the head end of the cylinder rearward of the rabbet 22 that the inward thrust or operative stroke of the piston stem is properly limited whereby an air pocket of adequate capacity is assured behind the piston member, and whereby the piston member can not injuriously collide with the closed end of the cylinder.
In operation, as thedoor 23, in swinging closed strikes the exterior buffer end of the piston stemthe piston member is caused to travel rearwardly in the cylinder, and
14 and the flexible flange of the piston member yielding to such air flow; this movement continuing until the piston and its stem regains normal outwardly moved position.
From the above description it will be apparent that door-check device according to this invention as above described, comprises but few parts easily assembled, and involving a novel interconnected relation at a single end of the cylinder body of a combined cylinder head and supporting bracket, whereby a very strong and durable and yet relatively inexpensive construction is furnished capable of being produced and marketed at exceedingly low cost. 7 Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A pneumatic door-check comprising a sheet metal cylinder having anj integral closed rear end, a combined sheet metalcyL inder-head and supporting bracket, the open end of said cylinder'having clinching lugs projecting through and engaged on the external side of said cylinder-head, a pistonmember slidable within said cylinder, a piston stem projecting exteriorly through said cylinder-head with its outer extremity adapted to extend beyond a door stop of a door-frame and in the path of movement of a door toward said stop, and a compression spring intermediate the closed rearward end of said cylinder and said pistonmember, said combined cylinder-head and supporting bracket being provided inconnection with the latter portion with an integral base of predetermined forward extension to act as a gauge in locating the device on a door frame and in proper relation to the door stop thereof.
,2. In a pneumatic door-check, a sheet metal cylinder having an integral semispherical closed rear end; an integral combined sheet metal cylinder-head and supporting bracket, comprising a head-body, a laterally extending bracket arm, and abase extending from the extremity of said bracket arm at substantially right angles thereto; the open end of said cylinder having integral clinching lugs'projected through circumferentially arranged apertures in said head-body and clinched exteriorly upon the same to unite the cylinder therewith; a'pisfree extremity; and a compression spring intermediate the closed rearward end of said cylinder and said piston member, said base of the combined cylinder-head and supporting bracket being of predetermined forward extenslon relative to the head-body thereof whereby the same serves as a gauge 10 in locating the device on a door-frame 'in proper relation to the door stop thereof and so as to predeterinine the operative stroke of said piston member.
In testimony, that I claim the invention 15 set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this 2nd day of September, 1927.
