My invention relates to improvementsm containers and has for its object to provlde a container for oil and the like which may be shipped by common carrier wlthout crating.
The existing reguirement regarding shipment, uncrated, o containers used for such purposes consists of a test prescrlbed by the Interstate Commerce Commission regulations, Shipping Container Specification Number 39*C, namely, a single drop of the filled container upon a hard surface from a height of four feet.
In accomplishing this result, I have produced a container comprising a cylindrical body having a depressed top surrounded by a chime; a-hinged carrying handle mounted at the center of said depressed top, which handle, when folded against the top, will be beneath the level of the plane of the top of the chime. In the chime a pourin lip is formed, and adjacent to, the base 0 the pouring lip I provide a pouring nozzle, which is preferably mounted at an incline r approximating that of the pouring lip. l.
also provide a bafie plate within the nozzle and a vent tube extending from a polnt within the nozzle to a point within the container.
The pouring nozzle is provided with the usual shrew ca when that screw cap or closure is seated in place, its top will be beneath the level of the plane of the top of the chime. The result of this construction is that the container, when filled with its proper contents, may be dropped, top down, upon a solid receiving surface, from a height of four feet repeatedly without creating a leak. I thus provide a container responding to the test required by the regulations of the Interstate Commerce Commission, above described,

Description.
The cylindrical body of my container I have indicated as A and the top as B. At its top the cylindrical body A is provided with a chime 4. U on the head B and adjacent the inner ace of the chime i is formed the annular gutter 5 for the reception of oils that may be spilled during the process of pouring same from nozzle 6, that nozzle 6 being mounted adjacent to the pouring lip 7 (formed in the chime 4), being set into a depression 8 formed in the head B. The nozzle 6 is provided with the screw cap or closure 12, and when that cap 12 is in place its highest point is beneath the level of the plane of the top of the chime 4, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. v

While I have illustrated and described my invention embodied in a cylindrical container, ny variations of form of that container may be made without departure from my invention as embodied in the following claims.
I claim:
1. A container comprising a body having a projecting chime at its top; a pouring lip formed in said chime; a pouring nozzle mounted in the head of the container in proximity to said pouring lip; and an annular oil-receiving channel formed ad acent to said chime.
2. A container comprising a body having a projecting chime at its top; a pouring 11p formed in' said chime; a pouring nozzle mounted in the head of the container in proximity to said pouring lip and inclined to direct its flow substantially in the direction of flow of said ouring lip; and an annular oil-receiving c annel formed adjacent to said chime. e
3. A container comprising a body having a projecting chime at its top; a pouring 1i formed in said chime; a pouring nozz e mounted in the head of thecontainer in proximity to said pouring lip; and an an-' nular oil-receiving channel formed ad acent to said chime; in combinationwith a aflieplate mounted within said nozzle and a venttube extending from a point within the nozzle to a point within the container.
