IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM ROAD-RAMMERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,839, dated September 21,1875; application filed August 26, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL JOHNSON, of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Steam-Rammer; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying' drawing, which represents a side elevation of the machine.
The nature of the invention consists in operating a ram mer by means of a steam-cylinder, placed at the end of a crane, mounted and swinging upon a carriage, which supports a boiler and'furnace, said carriage being either wholly or partially impelled by steam, or driven or drawn in any manner that may be convenient.
In the drawing, A marks the body, and W the wheels, ofthe carriage. A boiler, B, with a suitable furnace, below it, is mounted on the carriage, and supplies the steam required to Work the apparatus.
If preferred, an engine may be driven by the steam from the boiler, and be used to propel the carriage in any well-known manner; but this forms no part of my invention.
A steam-pipe, S S, having a steam-tight joint at J, conducts steam from the boiler B to the valve-chest E of cylinder 0. Thevalvechest incloses a suitable valve to control the operation of the steam upon a piston-attachedto the piston-rod F, the lower end of which carries the rammer R. v
The steam-valve is operated by meansof levers in the manner usually adopted in steamhammers, so that the force of each blow is perfectly regulated by the hand of the operator, at will.
The cylinder 0 is attached to the end of a crane, D D, which swings horizontally on a post, P, located above, and in line with, the king-bolt of thecarriage, and supported by the braces G H.
The rammer thus constructed is intended for use in laying street-pavements, and in other engineering work, to which it may be applicable.
. What I claim is The portable steam-rammer hereinbefore described, the same consisting of the combination, with a suitable carriage supporting a boiler and a furnace, of the crane D D, steampipes S S, cylinder 0, and rammer B, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
