UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
JOSEPH D. HOBBS, NORTHFIELD, IOWA. I
IMPROVEMENT IN TIRE-SHRINKING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 67,835, dated September 21,1875 application filed April 17, 1875. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH D. HOBBS, of Northfield, Des Moines county, Iowa, have invented an Improvement in Tire-Shrinking Machines, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to facilitate the shrinking of wheel-tires, iron hoops, or other forms of wrought bar-iron or steel, without the necessity of cutting and welding. It consists in the improved tire-shrinking machine hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, J J represent the eccentric jaws for holding the metal. The said jaws are secured tothe arms H H, which are hung by bolts to the back K. To the lower extremity of the arms are attached the connecting-rods O O, which are moved back and forth by the double eccentrics L,
worked by means of a lever, F. The anvil A' is secured to the back K, on which is a scale, B, and to which is also attached by a pivot an indicator, S, connected to one of the levers H by a rod, 0.
The back of the machine is bolted to a post or wall. The metal to be shortened, whether instraight bars,'hoop, or tire form, is to be heated and placed in the jaws J J. Thedouble eccentric L is turned by the lever F, which draws the jaws together, compressing the metallic bar or tire in'the direction of its length, and affording a means of keeping the harm tire free from kinks by rapping it with a hammer on the anvil A, thus shrinking the metal in the most perfect form vand manner, and the exact amount of shrinkage will be shown on the scale B by the indicator S.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The improved tire-shrinkerherein described, consisting of the combination of the anvil A, back K, carrying-scale B, and indicator S, rod 0, levers H, jaws J, connecting-rods 0, double eccentric L, and lever F, as and for the purpose set forth.
