TUB COVER.
Application filed July 29,
This invention relates to improvements in tub covers, more particularly to improvements in covers used for butter tubs.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an improved form of connection between the cover and the depending metal band or hoop, which latter is adapted to extend around the tub, and hold the cover in place, whereby the upper portion of said metal band or hoop is so fitted and adJusted to the cover that there will be no portion of said band or hoop projecting above the top surface of the cover.
With the foregoing primary object, and other incidental objects, in view, the invention consists of the devices and parts, or the equivalents thereof, as hereinafter more fully pointed out.
In the accompanying drawing,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a fragment of the cover, and the metal band or hoop thereof disclosing fully the improved construction;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view, in perspective, to further clearly illustrate the invention Fig. 3 is a similar view showing slight modifications; and
Fig. 4 is a similar view SllOWlYlQ' a further modification, wherein the flange of the metal band or hoop is provided with a downwardly extending tongue which enters thesurface of the wooden cover.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 indicates the wooden top or cover, shown of circular formation. This cover at its outer edge is provided with a recess 6, the said recess forming an inner shoulder 7.
The numeral 8 indicates the metal band or hoop, which is adapted to extend around the tub (not shown), and hold the cover removahly in positionwith respect to the tub.
The upper edge of this band or hoop is provided with an inturned flange -9 which fits in the recess 6, and the inner edge thereof bears against the shoulder 7. It will be understood that the recess 6 is of such depth that when the inturned flange is seated therein, the surface of said flange will not project above the upper surface of the top or cover.
The ends of the metal band or hoop are connected together by rivets 10, and the lower edge of the band is preferably beaded as indicated by thenumeral 11.
1926. Serial No. 125,728.
The band is preferably of slightly tapered formation, gradually flaring outwardly toward and to its lower end, so as to adapt the band to readily fit over the upper open end of the tub.
The band is connected to the cover preferably by staple sewing, the staples being indicated by the numeral 12, and shown as passing through the band and entering the outer peripheral edge ofthe cover.
It will be seen that the inturned flange 9 of the band or hoop is corrugated, as indicated by the numeral 13. This is done in order to compensate for overlapping of portions of the flange which would otherwise exist were it attempted to turn in the metal to form this flange, without first providing these corrugations.
It will be further noted that the band or hoop 8 is provided with vertical crimps or corrugations 14. This is also rendered necessary in order to provide the tapered formation of the band, inasmuch as without these crimps or corrugations, it would be imposwherein the inturned flange of the band or hoop instead of being at right angles to the main portion of the hoop, is on a curve, as indicated by the numeral 6, the recess in the top or cover for the reception in this curved flange being similarly curved as indicated by the numeral 7.
Figure 3 also shows a further modification, wherein instead of securing the band or hoop to the top or cover by means of staples, it is secured by making indentations to form projections 15, which extend into the peripheral edge of the cover.
In Figure 4 of the drawing is shown still another modification wherein the inturned flange 9 is provided with a downwardly extending lip 16, which is forced into the top or cover, as clearly shown. This lip forms an additional holding means, causing the flange 9. to remain firmly seated in its recess.
From the foregoing description'of my invention, it will be seen that by the provision of the recess 6 in the top or cover, which receives the inturned flange 9 of the band, the upper surface of said flange does not project above the top surface of the cover, the depth of the recess, of course, being so. proportioned as to bring about this result. It follows that there is no upstanding shoulder formed by the inturned flange. Such a shoulder, of course, would necessarily be 1. As a new article of manufacture, a top or cover for a pail, provided in its upper surface with a surrounding edge recess, and a band secured to the top or cover, having corrugations therein to permit said band to taper upwardly, the upper edge of said band being flanged inwardly, said flange being corrugated to prevent overlapping of portions thereof and fitting in the recess in the cover, the depth of the recess being such that the surface of the inwardly extending flange will not be above the, surface of the cover.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a top or cover for a pail, provided in its upper surface with a surrounding edge recess, and a band secured to the top or cover having corrugations therein to permit said band to taper upwardly, and said' band extending below the cover to provide means for engaging the pail to hold the cover in place, the upper edge of said band being flanged inwardly, said flange being corrugated to pre vent overlapping of portions thereof, and fitting in the recess in the cover, the depth of the recess being such that the surface of. the inwardl extending flange will not be above the sur ace of the cover.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a top or cover for a pail, provided in its upper surface with a surrounding edge recess, and a band secured to the topor cover having corrugations therein to permit said band to taper upwardly, and said band extending below the cover and having a beaded lower edge to provide means for engaging the pail to hold the cover in place, the upper edge of said band being flanged inwardly. said flange being corrugated to prevent overlapping of portions thereof, and fitting in the recess in the cover, the depth of the recess being such that the surface of the inwardly extending flange will not be above the surface of the cover.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
MOWRY SMITH.
