PATENT FFIGE.
JULIUs LEIss, 0E PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET BEATERS AND CLEANERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,770, dated September 14, 1875; application led August 2, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS LEISS, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a cer-Y tain new and useful Carpet Beater and -G1eaner5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others uskilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which- A Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section ofthe invention; Fig. 2*, a vertical longitudinal section of the invention.
The object of my invention is to produce a machine, device, or apparatus by which carpets can be thoroughly beaten and cleaned without being removed from the licor on which they are laid. My invention accordingly consists in the novel construction of the parts hereinafter described, and their combination, producing an apparatus of the character above set forth.
A in the accompanying drawing represents a box formed with an open mouth,- A1, having two haring sides, a a. B B represent two series of intersecting-rods attached to bars bb, which are moved by tappets C, their return or downward motion being effected by springs D D. E E are two leaves, hinged at c e, and forming flap-valves, which open upwardly. F is a rectangular frame of four sides, f1 f1, having a cross piece, f. Fl F are two sections forming the lid of said frame and hinged at f2 f2, so as to operate as valves, opening npwardly and alternating with the leaves E E, as hereinafter described. Gis a plunger or piston passing through the lid A2, actuated bythe handle G and secured to the crosspiece f. H is an opening near the lid A2, having Hap-valves h lo, which open outwardly.
On depressing the handle Gr, the frame F is moved downwardly, and the arms a', which handle upwardly the arms a a are raised, and
through them the rods B B lifted a short distance, after which they are released from their engagement with the tappets G, whereupon the rodsBB, bythe action of the springsDD, l
are made to strike the carpet beneath. During the upward movement 0f the handle the ,y
valves E E, by suction, open, and the valves F' Ff, under pressure of the air above, close. This has the effect of drawing or pumping the dust beaten from the lcarpet into the upper portionv of the case A and ejecting it through the opening H, which should be provided with a flexible tube terminating in a water vessel or sponge to prevent the dissemination of the dust through the apartment.
l. A machine or apparatus for cleaning carpets while laid on the floor, embracing the following instrumentalities: A tight box 0r case, a series of rods or beaters, and a valve or valves for drawing up the dust raised by the beaters, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination ot' the case A, beaters l B B, frame F, valves E and F', and plunger G, with the tappets C, arms a', bars b, and springs D, the several parts beingoonstructed and combined for operation,'substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I lhave hereunto set my hand this 27th day of July, 1875.
J ULIUS LEISS.
