To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NUTTRR W. MURPHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oedar Junction, in the county of Johnson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, and inwh-ich- Figure 1 is a plan view, Fig. 2 is a crosssection, and Fig. 3 is alongitudinal section, of my improved Washing-machine.

This invention appertains to that class of washing-machines in which provision is made for the escape of the surplus water and compressed air from under the plunger in its down- Ward stroke to act on the fabrics, the plan heretofore adopted to effect this result consisting in fastening spaced-apart ribs of a semicircular form to the bottom, ends, and sides of the clotheslreceptaele.

The nature of my invention consists in the employment, in connection with a vessel or tub, of a lining adapted to conform to the bottom, ends, and sides of the vessel, and composed of a series of spaced-apart slats and a plunger adapted to fit and work in the vessel or tub, and provided with means for its operation, substantially as hereinafter more fully set -i'orth and claimed.

To carry out my invention l employ a vessel or tub, preferably made of metal to adapt it for heating` water preparatoryto washing. It is also made preferably rectangular in shape, and provided with hand-holds a forits convenient handling and outlet-pipe c topass off the dirty water after washing.

B is a lining, composed of spaced-apart bottom pieces or slats, b, and spaced-apart vertical end and side pieces or slats, b', united tothe bottom pieces and to a frame, b2, at their upper ends. This lining is thu's adapted to tit into and conform to the inside of the vessel or tub A, and may rest on longitudinal strips "or bars placed in the bottom of the vessel or tub A. The purpose of this lining, composed prinand water rushing into theintermediate spaces between the slats, and thc water flowing over the plunger to permit it to tlow back upon the fabrics during the upward stroke of the plunger to be again used.

c is a frame screwed or otherwise secured upon the outer upper edge of the vessel or tub A, the screws or other fasteniu gs thereof passing through the vessel and into the frame b2 of the lining B to also secure the lining in position in the vessel or tub.

C is the plunger, constructed preferably of au imperforate board, rectangular in shape to adapt it to fit into and work in the vessel or tub, and having a downward-projecting Bange, C', on its under side, arranged around its outer edge. The plunger C has fixed to its ends two upwardlyeextended arms, d d, each hung at its upper end between two parallel bars, e, of a frame or lever, D, pivoted at its rear end, pref'- erably by means of a rod, e', to bars E, fastened upon the frame c, and having their rear ends supported in anv elevated position by means of standards f, fastened thereto and passed down through apertures in the fratrie e, and into sockets j", formed upon or supplied to the vessel or tub A. The fulcrum or rod e of the lever or frame D is capable of adjustment, as are also the fulcrums or pivotal pins of the plunger-arms d, by means of serial perforations to vary the stroke and leverage of the plunger as may be required. g g are two other standards fastened to the/ rear side of the frame c, and having their upper ends each extending up between the parallel bars e on its side of the machine, and the fulcrum-rod of the lever E passed through it to strengthen and render more substantial the fulcrum-point of the lever. The lever-frame E has a handle, E', to permit ofits convenient manipulation in operating the plunger.

rllthe operation of the machine is obvious, as by reciprocating the plunger it will be caused to act on the fabrics in the tub A, and by this action, in connection with that of the water, the cleansing ot' the fabrics will be effected.

This lining can be readily removed for re` pairs or other purpose by withdrawing the screws securing it to the frame at the top of the receptacle.
