fThis invention relates to locomotive boil ers and more particularly to boilers of thatV type wherein the irebox embodies walls of y water-containing tubes and the object is to provide certain y of this type to make it more durable and eective in service.
' My invention will best be understood by reference to the following description of an illustrative embodiment ings, wherein:

Referring to Fig. 3, the boiler there shown comprises the usual barrel 5 through which extends the flues'or lire tubes 7 and a irebox made up principally of small sections, preferably thin walled cylindrical tubes, which as contrasted with a standard tirebox consisting of spaced sheets provides for the elimination of stay bolts, an enlarged heating surface and greater strength to `resist pressure. l j
The irebox comprises a crown chamber which preferably consists (see Fig. 1) of a central drum 9 and two lateral drums 11 whichA have their adjacent sides flattened and fitting together with the central drum 9 fitting between the lateral drums 11 in the manner of a keystone to form a crown cham'-y ber of a general sector shape having a bottom which will remain well covered with.

The throat chamber `is in communication with a foundation chamber or mudring 31 running along the two -sides and the rear of the irebox and which may consist, as best shown in Fig. 1,'of Va channel-'shaped sec,- tion closed on theouterside by a plate 33.
The side walls of the firebox'extend between the foundation chamber and crown chamber and preferably `consist ofthin walled cylindrical tubes 35 .set sideby side substantially in contactV and communicating at their lower and upper ends respectively withtheinterior of the foundation' chamber and of the crown.
In ythe embodiment of the invention here l illustrated this connection is made by providing the tubes with reduced ends which enter suitable openings in the top of th crown chamber and inthe sides of the lateral drums 11 and which are expanded or otherwise suitably secured in these Openings. As

The rear wall of'the lirebox may .embody y in its construction suitable water connecting frame and Athe crown I prefer to utilize relaL tively small tubes of uniform diameter which will be relatively widely spaced as compared with the side wall tubes 35, the space between these tubes being closed at the rear of the -ireboX by suitable nonconducting material such as fire brick (not-shown). VThis construction is practicable particularly since the rear wall of the iirebox is not subjected tosuch high heats as the side walls and since the walls of large tubes at the side .fof the iireboX Vprovide for the circulation of anefective'volume of water and :for
a large heating surface. The reduction in area of the heating surface whichmight be Y expected :from the smaller sizeof the rear wall tubesmay be somewhat compensated :torby| so applying the refractory Amaterial shorter tubes .extending .between the framing of the Firebox and the crown may be so bent yas to `present their ends substantially normally or perpendieularly to these elements and in particular the tubes may be given a double curvature as illustrated ijn Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings to .enter the upper portion of the foundation chamber and the @lower wall of the iiebox peigpeiidicularly thereto. These tubes may then be expanded in suitable openings and upset or .rolled .over on the interior thereof. It willfbefclear by reference to .-Fig. 3 that the crown 'adjacent the frear end is definitely spaced `from .the Afoundation chamber. by 'the supporting trame comprising the pillars 43 and girder 45 and the upset ends of the-tubes act Ain opposition -to Athis fsupport so 'that .an effectual tight .connection is assuredrwhile the .double curvature of the .tubes ljprovides a =certain .-springiness vtherein ,facilitating theiri'ncorporation inthe assembly .and con-v tributing to .the wearing qualities of the boilerandits frame.
:Fromthe ,preceding description it will be seen that :inthe embodiment of the inventionfdescribedthe mainportions of .the fire-A box `are yfheld `:in position and Vdefinitely related @to :thezheavy barrel 5 supported onthe framing'of the locomotiveand tothe ffoundation chamber 31 and-that this .is doneindependently -of .the 'relatively'l flight tubes which goto .formfthe walls of `the ireboX. so that allthe parts of the irebox are adapted to resist vthe .severe racking and pounding strains to which they-are subjectedin the passageoffthe `locomotiveover the road.
Having described -in detail a particular embodiment-:of .my invention i as .herein illus# trated in order that the principles might be dation chamber and the crown and thev clearly understood, what I claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I shall express in the following claims.
Claims:
l. A locomotive boiler comprising a barrel and a firebox comprising a crown chamber communicating at its forward end with said barrel and supported in part thereby, a foundation chamber also communicating at its forward end with said barrel, water tubes extending between foundation and crown and providing the walls of the firebox and pillars exterior of the walls extending between foundation and crown at the rear of the latter and supporting the rear portion of the crown independently ofvsaidv tubes.
2. A locomotive boiler comprising a barrel and a firebox comprising a crown chamber embodying a central and lateral longitudinally extending drums communicating at their forward ends with said barrel, a foundation chamber also communicating at its forward end with the barrel, water tubes extending between the crown and the foundation and providing walls for the iirebox,
illars extending between the rear heads of the lateral drums and the foundation to support the crown indepenedntly of said tubes and a cross connection extending between said pillars and supporting the central drum and also serving as a tween the pillars providing for the lire door.
3. Alocomotive boiler comprising a barrel and a rebox comprising a crown chamber communicating at its forward end with said barrel and supported in part thereby, a
foundation chamber also communicating at its forward end with said barrel, water tubes tie between the pillars,` the space beneath said connection and be-v a foundation` chamber also communicatingV at its forward end with said barrel and ex tending rearwardly beyond the rear end of the crown, water-containing walls yfor the firebox comprising tubes extending between crown and foundation and pillars located outward of the rear wall of the firebox ex-V between foundation and crown to tending support the latter independently of the tubes and relieve the sa-me of column loads and of the strains longitudinal of the boiler incident to its use.
5. A locomotive boiler comprising a barrel and a firebox comprising a crown cham ber communicating at its forward end with said barrel and supported in part thereby, a foundation chamber also communicating at its forward end with said barrel, water tubes disposed substantially upright but not Vertical between said crown and foundation and providing side and rear water walls for the iirebox and pillars exterior of the walls extending bet-ween foundation and crown at the rear of the latter and supporting the rear portion of the crown independently of said tubes In testimonywhereof, I have signed my name to this specification..
