"VALVE.
Application filed May 16, 1924. Serial No. 713,827.
This invention relates to improvements in valves, and more particularly to that-type of valve illustrated in United States Letters Patent No. 1,356,298 granted to me October 19th, 1920.
In addition to the advantages and uses for the valve set forth in the Letters Patent .herein enumerated, the present invention presents an embodiment of valve wherein a definitely defined seat is provided between the surface of the mainvalve and the point associated with the valve cage on which said main valve seats. A further object is to provide a construction wherein a greater Water passage area is provided in the cage than is afforded in the construction illustrated in my above mentioned patent.
Other ob]ects are to provide a polygonal boss associated with the cage enabling the easy engagement of the cage when it is desired to thread the valve structure into posi-. tion, and to provide a defined seat between the main valve and the auxiliary valve. One of the most im ortant objects of this invention is to affor aidouble guide for the auxiliary valve in the form of outer and inner bearing surfaces, and to so construct the stem of the auxiliary valvethat it receives the stem of the main valve, and reciprocates thereon, the periphery of the auxiliary valve afi'ording a guide for the main valve when the two operate at the same time.
With the above mentioned and other objects in View, theinvention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the acoompanying drawings, and set forth in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the s irit or sacrificing any of the advantages 0 the invention.
To more fully comprehend the invention reference is directed to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical section taken on line 2-2 of Figure 3, and
Figure 3 is a View in top plan.
In the drawings the numeral 1 indlcates a coupling member having a threaded perlphcry 2 and a shouldered flange 3, the surface of which is threaded and the upper face of which provides a seat 4 for the ma n valve.
Threaded to the periphery of the flange 3 is a cage 5, the outer wall of which is ported. or cut away as at 6 for'approximately its vertical area, and said wall terminates in a converging or dome portion 7 formed with a stem guide 8, from the lower end of which depends a boss 9. The periphery of the wall forming the dome 7 is of polygonal configuration asat -10 to receive a wrench or other valve mounting tool. Like in my patent above mentioned, I mount withinv the cage to control the opening 11 a main plate or disk valve 12, having a relatively wide pe ripheral edge 13 which is guided by frictional contact with the inner face of the parallel portion of the wall 5. The under surface of the main valve is cut away or recessed as at 14 to afford a definite seat 15 for contacting with the face 4.- Also like the valve in my previously mentioned patent, the main valve in the present case is ported as at 16, and the passage of fluid through the ports is controlled by an auxiliary plate or diskvalve 17 seating. on one face of the main valve 12. A relatively heavy spring 18 is coiled about the boss 9, and bearing on the upper surface of the main valve 12 normally maintains the same seated, and a comparatively light weight spring 19 bearing on the auxiliary valve 17 maintains the auxiliary valve seated on the main valve 12. Centrally from the auxiliary valve 17 extends a tubular guide 20, the end of which projects into the guide opening 8 and the peripheral surface thereof has fitting contact with the wall of the, guide opening 8. Into the tubular portion 21 of member having a threaded flange formed wvith a valve seat, a cage having a cylindrical portion threaded atone endon said flange and providing a cylindrical guide wall on the interior thereof beyond. said member, the free end of the cage having a sleeve of reduced size arranged concentrically with respeet to the cylindrical portion, a main valve formed in the main valve having a tubular stem having the interior provided with aslidable bearing fit on thestem of the main valve, and the exterior provided with a slidable bearing fit in the sleeve of said cage,
whereby each valve is provided with a spaced two bearing support and guideway in said cagethrough the cooperatlve assembly of each valve with the other.
2. A doubly guided double valve comprising in combination with a metallic seat, of
a metallic faced disc valve having a stem and a port, a'second metallic faced disc valve arranged to overlie said port and having a tubular stem slidably receiving the stem of the first valve, independent spring means normally operating each valveto seated position, and a cage having peripheral guiding means for the periphery of the first valve, and a central guiding means for the tubular stem of the second valve, said peripheral and central. guiding means and thecooperation of both valves providing a double guide for the independent operation of each valve.
Intestimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
ALEXANDER MoGREGOR.
