On the upper rear portion of the main frame is mounted'avvork carriage indicated generally at 18 supporting the usual platen roller 19 on which the work is carried. At 2O is indicated a ribbon supporting and feeding means and at 2l is a guide 'for the ribbon adjacent the printing point. t will be observed that the work or platen carriage and the platen thereon are supported above and to the rear of the inclined type bar supporting means z id at a much lower level than is usual in visible writing machines of the swinging bar type, the main frame l() being quite low or liat with its highest point approximately level with the rear or highest bank of keys carried at the forward ends lof the system of foroand-attextending key levers 'lt will also be observed that the ribbon supporting and feeding means is located forward of the segment plate, in the rear of the free ends of the type bars, and between the horizontal levels ot' the uppermost point ot' the platen and the lowern'lost point of the :trame so as not to increase the height of the machine and so as to occupy the free space afforded within these bounds by the general arrangement oli' the adjacent parts and devices. v
The carriage is supported on the main frame for longitudinalword-spacing, ii'eeding movement by means ot the usual or any suitable construction comprising, for example, the usual guide rails Q1 movable over abcd plate `3l carried by the usual shift frame (not shown) movable on the main frame to each printing case, which construc tion, therefore. requires no detailed description herein. The carriage is moved or fed by suitable motive means such as a spring drum indicated generally at Q2, Figure l. and including a pulley 23 on which is wound a flexible element (not shown) connected with the carriage as well understood in the art. It will be noted that the pulley and spring drum. and also the escapement mechanism comprising the rack and the pair oi pawls or dogs cooperating therewith, are rall arranged in the space afforded within the rear part `of the main frame between the segment member or plate and the rear wall of the frame and between the lower part ot the platen carriage andthe base of the main farne. and that the lower part of the earriage and the bed plate 3l upon which it is guided are relatively close to the level of the upper edge of the plate l5 and the rear bank of keys and support the platen at a low point in position to be struck by the type bars after said bars have been turned on their pivots from upwardly andforwardly inclined normal positions substantially at right angles to the plate to upwardly and rearwardly inclined printing positions substantially parallel with the plate. Pawl QG is pivotally supported at its lower end on a spindle or screw 28 carried between spaced ears 2S) on a bracket 30 depending from the carriage bed plate 31. Pawl 2T is pivotcd on pawl 26 as at 32 and pawl 26 has a laterally projecting arm 33 to which is fixed one end of a tension spring Sil the other end ol. which is fixed to a bracket 35 extending rearwardly from bracket 30. Such means serve to. maintain the carriage securely in position `so ftliat it cannot he shifted by :jarring or bodily movement of nthe machine Aand Sat the same time, bydieconnecting the escapement mechanism, protect the latteragainst Vundue strain and injury. These features are particularly adif'antageous in conjunction With machines ot' a portable type for safeguarding them during transportation. Such i machines .are
commonlyprovided Witli'casings for .enclosing them during transportation and the present invention comprises, furthermore, a construction and arrimgemeiit of parts providing 'for automatic operation of the carriage locking and mechanism disconnecting devices when the casing is moved to position to enclose the machine.
`Referring to ythe drawings fora more detailed description of these protective features, the `lower Lend of bracket 30 is shown as prowided with a rearwardly turned ear 49, on which is niovably or pivotally` supported, as at 50, a member or lever 5l. Y The latter carries a part or dog 52 having a bevelled upper edge for engagement with any of the notches 47 of the marginal stop bar, when the lever is moved forwardly of the machine. as shown in Figure 3, thus securely locking the carriage in position.

The operation of .the lpresent ,improvements has iheenieezplained in connection with ,the description of the construction ol' the same. Lever 5l may, of course, be operated by hand ,and provided with any suitable `dc- Etent .means or fretaini-ng it in operating position, but it is prcferredyto arrange the lever as described for operation bythe casing so that Whenever the machine is `closed `for `transportation `the carriage ,is automatr `cally `locked and ,its lcontrolling mechanism disconnected Without requiring attention. -Lever 51 is of course shift-able with the cscapement trame or bed plate to each printing case and operatesin any shifted po3ition of the carriage. The carriage yis locked in such a vWay as to effectively' .prevent any movement thereof in any positionin :which the n'iachine .may :be placed andthe ,disconnection of the carriage controlling `mecha` `nism relieves the latter :of all strain, which is ,thrown upon the carriage [locking `dev-ice. The construct-ion is exceedingly Vsimple in Lform, vcomprising ibut l-fexv parts, u resultattained in part by reason of the advantageous combination oi' the same with the usual parts of the typewriter. That is to say, in locking the carriage, use is made of the usual notched bar or rack commonly provided as a part of the marginal stop means.
Similarly, advantage is `taken of the usual pivotal mounting of the paivl means controlling the feeding `movement of the cai iiage, for moving the pawls to disconnect them, so that special construction ot the parts of the typewriter proper is not required. The provision of the typewriter with the 'features of the present invention renders the machine safe iloi' transportation without danger of injury to its parts, or any attention on the part oi' the operator.
I claim as my invention:
1. A typeiviiting machine comprisng a frame, a work carriage, mechanism for moving said carriage on the frame to feed the work, a cover for the machine, and a locking device on said frame actuated automatically by the application of said cover for locking said carriage in any ofits substantially central positions to protect the same and said mechanism during movement ot' the machine.
2. A typewriting machine comprising :i frame, a work carriage. mechanism for moving said carriage on the frame to i'eed the work, a cover for the machine, and a device on said frame actuated automatically hy the application of saidy cover for locking said carriage against inadvertent movement and provided with means for disconnecting said mechanism to protect the latter and said carriage against injury during movement ot' the machine.
3. A typeivriting machine comprising a frame, a work carriage movable on the frame and having a portion provided with a plurality of notches spaced from one another in the direction of movement of the carriage, a cover for the machine, and a locking device on the :trame actuated 'automatically by the adjustment of said cover into engagement With the notches of said portion for locking the carriage against inadvertent movement.

In a typewriting machine, the combinationV with a frame and a. traveling work carriage thereon provided with marginal stop means including a notched portion extending in the direction of travel of the carriage, of a lever movably supported on the escapemcnt frame and having a part lor engagement with the notches ol said stop means for locking the carriage against inadvertent movement.
5. In a typeivriting machine, the combination with ak frame, a work carriage having a feeding movement thereon provided with marginal stop means including a notched portion extending in the direction of movement of the carriage, and mechanism for spacing the latter arranged for disengagement therefrom, of a protective device movable on the escapeinent .frame for disengagw ing said mechanismand carriage and for en gaging the notches of said stop means toloclt V the carriage against inadvertent movement. (3. In a typeivriting machine, the combination with a Vframe, al Work carriage having i nient with the notches of said stop incensi and with said mechanism for locking the carriage in position and disconnecting said rack and pavvl means to protect said parts from injury by inadvertent movement.
7. A typewriting machine comprising in combination a work carriage, mechanism for spacing said carriage to iccd the Work, n locking device for locking said carriage in position, a device :For disconnecting said mechanism, and a casing forthe macliiiic operating automatically upon iiioveiiieiit to position to enclose the latter, to actuate said devices for protecting the parts against iiijury during movement of the machine.
8. A typewriting machine comprising-in combination a Work carriage, mechanism for spacing said ycarriage to feed the work, a movable member provided with lmeans. `for locking the carriage in position and with means for disconnecting said mechanism and a casing for the machine operating automat ically, upon movement to position yto enclose the latter, to move said member to lock the carriage and disconnect said mechanism.
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a frame, a work carriage havingP a feeding movement thereon provided wit i ,i
marginal stop means including a notched portion extending in the direction ofmovcment of the carriage, and mechanism for spacing the latter including a rack and pawl means arranged for disconnection from each other, of a lever movahly supported on the escapeinent frame having means for engagement with the notches of said stop means and with said mechanism for locking tho carriage in position and disconnecting said rack and pavvl means, and a casing for 'the machine operating automatically, `upon movement to position to enclose the latter. to
move said lever to lock the carriage and disconnect said mechanism.
