This application is a continuation in part of my application for Letters Patent Serial No. 104,078 filed April 33, 1926, the struc ture of this application being an improvea meat in some reports upon the structure there shown.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved pulley well adapted for t'an belts of motor vehicles and the like In which is adjustable to belts of different widths and to compensate for wear, tension of the belt and the like.
A further object is to provide a pulley having these advantages which is very economical to produce, may be made of relatively light material and at the same time is :trong and durable.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will detinitely appear from the detailed description to follow. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary side View of a tan structure with my improved pulley mounted upon the spindle thereof.

Referrin to the drawing, 1 represents a fan WlllClTlS mounted on a suitable spindle projecting into the bearing housing 2, the
spindle not being illustrated.
My improved pulley comprises a barrel 3 having an inwardly projecting flange 4 at its inner end by means of which the tan is attached thereto, the fan having holes 5 therein to receive the attaching bolts or rivets. At its outer end the barrel 3 is provided with an outwardly inclined pulley flange 6. This element or unit of the pulley is preferably formed as a sheet metal stamping.
The second element or unit consists of a sleeve 7 arranged upon the barrel, this sleeve having an inclined flange 8 at its outer end dispoed in opposed coaeting relation to the flange 6. The sleeve 7 is partially splined, a notch 9 extending from its inner edge. The edges of the notch have opposed upturned flange parts 10 providing ears for the clamping bolt 11 by means of which the sleeve is clamped in its adjusted positions upon the barrel.
The notch has flange parts 12 extending from the outer edges of the ears to brace and support the same and also bracing parts 13 extend from the inner edges of the ears.
The sleeve has opposed spirall disposed slots 14 therein with which the ugs 15 on the barrel may be engaged by bending the lugs up through the slots after the sleeve has been slipped upon the barrel to bring the slots into register with the lugs. The slots being inclined as illustrated, the lugs facilitate the adjustment of the sleeve to proper position by the rotating of the sleeve after the lugs are in engagement with the slots. The lugs also serve to support the sleeve against end thrust when the parts are in adjusted position, thus very substantially reducing the clamping stress that would be necessary without the lugs. The parts are retained very securely in position. Further, the parts are retained in a sembled relation even though the bolt should become loose.
In Fig. 5 the sleeve is not slotted but the lug 16 is adapted to be struck up or turned up to coact with the outer edge of the sleeve. The sleeve may be adjusted so that the inclined portion 17 of its notch coacts with the lug.
The parts of my improved pulley are. easily formed as stampings and at the same time possesses the requisite strength for numerous uses. They may be quic ly adjusted to belts of varying widths or to compensate for wear, andto a considerable extent for the tensioning of belts of a tapered or wedge-shaped cross section,
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I
1. A pulley comprising a cylindrical barprojecting flanges at the edges of said notch providing opposed clamping bolt ears, portions of the edges of said notch being 1nelined, and a bolt disposed through saidears to clamp said sleeve in its adjusted position upon said barrel, said lu being bendable to permit the sleeve being slipped over the lug and the lug bent up to engage the sleeve.
2. A pulley comprising a cylindrical barrel provided with a pulley flange at one end, a sleeve adj ustably mounted on said barrel and provided with a pulley flan e enact-- ing with the pulley flange of said barrel, said sleeve being partially split to crmit the same to be clamped upon the barre a clamping means for said sleeve, and a bendable lug on said barrel adapted to be bent down to permit the sleeve to be passed over the same and when in'erected position to coact with the sleeve, the sleeve having an inclined part adapted to coact with said lug.
3. A pulley comprising a cylindrical barrel provided with a pulley flange at one end. a sleeve adjustably mounted on said barrel and provided with a pulley flange coacting with the pulley flange of said barrel, said sleeve being partially -split to permit the same to be clamped upon the barrel, a clamping means for said sleeve, and a bendable lug on said barrel adapted to be bent down to permit the sleeve to be passed over the same and when in erected position to coact with the sleeve.
4. A pulley comprising a cylindrical barrel having an outwardly inclined pulley flange at its outer end, an inturned attaching flange at its inner-end, a'sleeve adjustably mounted on said barrel and having an inwardly inclined pulley flange at its outer end and a notch at its inner end, there being projecting flanges at the edges of said notch providing opposed clamping bolt ears, a bolt disposed through said ears to clamp said sleeve in its adjusted position upon said barrel, and a lug on said barrel coacting with the sleeve.
5. A pulley comprisin a cylindrical barrel provided with a -pul ey ange, a sleeve adjustably mounted on said barrel and provided with a pulley flange coaclting with the pulley flange of said barrel, said sleeve being partially split to permit the same to be clamped upon the barrel, a clamping means for said sleeve, and a lug bendable on said barrel adapted to be erected to coact with pulley flange of said barrel, said sleeve be-- ing partially split to permit the same to be clamped upon the barrel, :1 lug on said barrel, said sleeve being provided with an inclined port-ion adapted to be adjusted in co acting-relation to said lug, and means for contracting said sleeve on said barrel for clamping it in its adjusted position.
7. A pulley comprising a cylindrical barrel provided with a pulley flange, a split sleeve adjustable on said barrel and pro-.
vided with apulley flange coacting with the flange of said barrel, a positioning lug on said barrel coacting with said sleeve, and means for contracting said sleeve on said barrel for securing it in its adjusted position thereon.
8. A pulley comprisin a cylindrical bar; rel provided with a pulley flange, a sleeve adjustably mounted on said barrel and provided with apulley flange coacting with the pulley flange of said barrel, said sleeve having a spirally disposed slot therein, a bendable lug on said barrel adapted to be adjusted into engagement with said slot, and means for clamping s'aid'sleeve upon said barrel. A pulley comprisin a cylindrical barrel provided with a pulley flange, a split sleeve adjustable on said barrel and -provided with a pulley flange coacting with the flange of said barrel, said sleeve having a spirally disposed part, 9. lug on said barrel coacting with such spirally disposed part of said sleeve and means for contracting said sleeve for clamping it in its adjusted position on said barrel.
10. -A pulley comprising a cylindrical barrel provided with a pulley flange, a sleeve adjustably mounted on said barrel and provided with a pulley flange coacting with the pulley flange of said barrel, said sleeve having a spirall disposed slot therein, a lug on said barre engaging said slot, and meansv for contracting said sleeve for clamping it in its adjusted position on said barrel.
