UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED D. ZIMMERMAN AND CLINTON WELLS, OF MOUNT CLARE, NEBRASKA; SAID WELLS ASSIGNOR T SAID ZIMMERMAN.
AUTOMATIC ALL-WEATHER STRIP.
Application filed April 17, 1926.
Our present invention has reference to a weather strip for doors and our object is the provision of a means for this purpose which will positively contact with the door strip,
regardless of the irregularities thereof and to prevent the entrance of air between the door and the said strip.
To the attainment of the above broadly stated objects and many others which will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, the improvement resides in certain novel features of construction, combination, and operative association of parts, a satisfactory embodiment of which is illustrated by the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation 01"" a door equipped with the improvement, parts being in section.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the improvement.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 1.
The door 1 is hingedly supported on its frame in the. usual manner and swings over a door or floor strip 2.
In carrying out our invention we groove the bottom edge of the door throughout the length thereof, as indicated by the numeral 3. Secured to the side walls provided by the groove 3, there are the parallel flanges 4 of a substantially U-shaped member 5. The U-shaped member has its top, at spaced intervals, provided with oppositely disposed slots 6, and these slots receive therethrough fingers 7 which extend from the offset central portions 8 on the upper edges of the plates 9. The plates 9 have their ends arranged in lapping relation and are pivotally connected. together, as at 10. The pivots lO pass through a compressible strip 11 which is preferably of rubber and which also preferably has its lower end, which projects a suitable distance below the plates 9, rounded. The fingers 7 are surrounded by coil springs 12 which exert a pressure between the flanges 8 of the plates and the top of the cross sectionally U-shaped member 5. The fingers have their upper ends rounded inwardly and from thence outwardly, as at 13, these portions providing Serial No. 102,749.
stop elements for limiting the outward movement of the compressible strip 11 when the door is swung oil of the strip or sill 2.
With. a construction as above described it will be. noted that the compressible strip is brought to contact with the door strip or sill 2, regardless oi any irregularities thereof and that air will be positively prevented from entering between the door and the said strip or sill.
Having described our invention, we claim:
1. The combination with a swingably mounted door which has its lower edge grooved longitudinally, of a substantially U-shaped member having its sides fixed to the side walls of the slot, a compressible strip of a length equaling that of the slot, plates on the sides of the strip having lapping ends which are pivotally connected together and to the strip, each of said plates having a cent a1 inwardly directed flanged portion that merges into an upstanding linger, said lingers passing through openings in the top of the U-shaped members and springs surrounding the lingers and exerting a tension between the flanged portions of the plates and the top of the U-shaped member.
2. The combination with a swingably mounted door which has its lower edge grooved longitudinally, or a substantially U-shaped member having its sides fixed to for limiting the outward movement of the.
strip when influenced by the springs.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures.
F. D. ZIMMERMAN. CLINTON WELLS.
