PATENT OFFICE. i
MATHIAS R. KONDOLF, OF CYNWYD, PENNSYLVANIA, .ASSIGNOR TO BOXBOARDPROD- UCTS COMPANY, O F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF DELA- TOOL FOR MANIPULATING FASTENERS CONTAINER CLOS'URES.
Application led January 26, 1924. Serial No. 688,739.
My invention is designed to provide means for engaging and securing together transversely disposed members of a .fastener for container closures, such fastener preferably comprising a rod secured to walls of the container and extending across the cover, and a keeper extending transversely to and having a looped end for engaging the rod.
ln its preferred form my invention comprises a hook for engaging such cross rod and mechanism for moving the hook so as to bring the rod engaged thereby within the loop of the keeper; the keeper being positioned by such mechanism, its looped end elevated to engage the rod by the inclined face of the hook, and the loop closed by a clincher coacting with such inclined face.
The characterist-ic features and advantages of my invention will more fully appear from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof and the accompanying drawings in illustration of the same.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an instrument embodying my invention AsA illustrated in the drawings, my inven-V tion comprises a body or housing 1, having the base 2 containing the slot 3 forming a hook 4 provided with the inclined surfaces 5. A lever 6, journalled in the top of the housing lon the pintle 7, has an arm 8 extending through a slot in the base 2 and con taining the groove 9. A bifurcated arm 10 extends from the lever transversely tothe arm 8, one of the bifurcations having connected therewith a coiled spring 11 anchored to an extension 2 of the base 2 so as to normally retract the arm 8 and spread the members 10 and 2 which form handles for the manipulation of the tool.
A bell crank 12, j ournalled in the housing 1 intermediate the slot 3 and pintle 7 has a curved arm 13 adapted tolap over the top of the lever 6 and provide a handle for rotating the jaw 14 into clinching relation sure, and is lhooked in a ksuitable ventilating aperture in the end wall.
Whenthe cross bar and keeper hooks have been engaged in theappropriate apertures,
my yinstrument is applied to the container with its base 2 resting upon the cover and the hook 4 in position for engaging the cross bar 15 in the slot. 3 and with the keeper 16 disposed in the groove 9 in the arm 8. The
application of pressure to the handles formed by the members 10 and 2 causes the arm 8 to bear against the closure rim and moves the housing 1 longitudinally, so that the cross bar 15 is drawn by the hook 4 toward the end of the container and the looped end of the keeper 16 is raised by the inclined surfaces 5 of the hook. and its engagement with the cross bar. When the cross bar 15 reaches the open end of the loop it slips into such loop and the handle 13 is then moved to rotate the clincher arm 14 and close the loop, thereby eifect-ually sealing the package. It will be understood that similar fasteners are applied toy each end of the container closure.
` Having described my invention, I claim: 1. A tool comprising an extended base for engaging a packagev surface .and projecting beyond the Vedge thereof, a member vrigidly connected with -said base and projecting outwardly therefrom,- av lever pivotally connected with said member adjacent to thetop thereof and projecting toward said base and beyond the bottom thereof, and an arm projecting transversely from said lever and forming a handle complementary to the projecting end of said base, said base and lever being provided with fastener and keeper entended bearing surface, a lever fulcrumed v.
relatively to said' base at a point offset from said bearing surface and perpendicular to a point intermediate its ends, said lever projccting beyond the surface of said base re mote from said ulcrum point, said base being adapted forv engaging a package surface and having means forengaging a fastener, and said lever being adapted for engaging a package surface transverse to the package surface first named, said base having a handle forming member projecting beyond the package-engaging surface oic said lever and complementary to a handle on said lever.
8. Anin-strument of the character described comprising a fastener-engaging vhook, a keeper-positioning device, lmeans ior v effecting relative movement ofsaid hook and device to engage a fastener vand keeper, and a clincher for b endingsaid keeper.
- 4C. `An instrument of the character described vcomprising fastener and keeper engaging members, and a clincher comprising a hell crank having a jaw coacting'with one oit' said members.
5. An instrument of the character described comprising a housing containing a slot Aforming a fastenerengaging hook and having an extended base `formimg a handle, and a lever fulcrumed krelatively to said housing and having an arm extending transver-sely to said base and an arm forming a handle complementary to said handle iirst nan'1ed,-said hook and lever being moved toward one another When said handles are moved toward one another. p'
V6. An instrument of the character described comprising a housing containing a slot orn'iing a fastener-engaging hook and having an extended base forming a handle, a lever fulcrumed relatively to -said housing and having an arm Jforming a handle complementary to said handle first named and an armI for engaging a container, and a clincher fulcrum'ed relatively to said hous-` ing between said hook and the fulcrum of said lever.y I i 7. An instrument of lthe character de scribed comprisingl a body having a hook thereon, and an extension forming a handle, a lever fulcrumed relatively to said body and having an arm containing a groove and an arm forming a handle complementary to said handle first named, and a member hav ing a jaw coacting With said hook.
, In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my name this 22nd day of January, 1924..
