IMPROVEMENT IN PORTFOLIO-STANDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,584, dated September 7, 1875; application filed July 30, 1875.
I a transverse vertical section.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the combination of one or two hinged spring-flaps with a stand composed of two side pieces, a vertical abutment, and a horizontal supporting-platform, so that by the combined action of the stand and the spring-flap a portfolio, or single sheets of engravings or of music, or of any other nature, when placed between said flap and the sition, and each portfolio or sheet can be conveniently reached and taken from the stand. \Nith the stand-and the main flap is combined a secondary spring-flap hinged to the main flap for the purpose of more eli'ectually retaining portfolios or single sheets in the required position on the stand.
In the drawing, the letter A designates my stand, which is composed of side pieces a, a central vertical abutment, b, and a horizontal platform, 0. These parts are united by screws, so that the whole can be readily taken apart for the purpose of packing it up in comparatively small space, and that the parts can be easily connected for use. To the platform 0 are connected two flaps, B B, the connection being effected by hinges d d. Said flaps extend beneath the platform, and their lower ends are subjected to the action of springs a, so that the upper parts of said flaps are forced inward against the vertical abutment b. The springs 6 can be made and applied in any desirable manner, but I prefer to use a single spring, which extends through a slotted bracket, f, as shown in Fig. 2, and the ends of which act on the two flaps B B. By forcing back the upper end of one of these flaps one or more portfolios or single sheets of paper can be placed upon the platform 0, and by allowing the flap to close up said portfolios or sheets are retained in an upright position, and when either of them is required for use or inspection it can be easily selected and taken off from the stand without disturbing the position of the remaining portfolios or sheets. With either or both of the main flaps B B is combined a secondary flap, O, which is hinged at its upper edge to its main flap, and which is subjected to the action of a spring, g. By the action of this secondary spring-flap additional steadiness is imparted to the portfolios or sheets placed on the platform a, and my stand is rendered available for portfolios or sheets of various different sizes. vertical abutment, are firmly retained in po- My stand is intended particularly for music, but it can be used for holding engravings or other sheets of paper, either singly or in portfolios. v
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a folio-stand having a platform, 0, a'vertical abutment, b, and supporting side pieces a, of aflap hinged upon the platform, and having its lower end extending below the platform, where it is subjected to the action of a spring for closing the flap, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the bracket f and spring 0 with the flaps B B, abutment b, and platform 0, substantially as described.
3. A secondary flap hinged upon the hinged spring side flaps, in combination with the' abutment b and platform 0.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 29th day of July, 1875.
