UNITED STATES STANLEY PUSHALSKI, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
WIRE-DRAWING BLOCK.
Application filed June 20,
This invention relates to wire drawing blocks and similar articles, and while not limited thereto, relates more particularly to multiple deck drawing blocks, and has for its object the provision of a block o't this class having a novel construction including a novel form of tixed wearing ring wherehv wire of ditl'erent reductions can be drawn on the same block.
Heretot'ore drawing blocks of the class of this invention have employed removable wearing rings with straight laces which makes the diameter of the rings correct tor only one particular percentage of reduction since a straight ring of the wrong diameter will cause breakage and slippage ot the wire on the ring. Slip wearing rings have also been employed on wire drawing blocks but slip rings will not function lilte the tixed rings of this invention. since the ring will slip rather than the wire and. therefore the advantage of the varying thirlniesses ol' the ring are not had.
In the drawings Figure l is a plan view ot a drawing hloel; constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 1Ill of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan of one of the wearing rings.
Figure 4 is a section through a slightly modified shape of ring Referring more particularly to the drawings, the letter A designates the lower deck of the block, and the letter 13 designates the upper deck.
The lower deck A consists of a central spindle receiving portion 2, a web portion 3. a drum portion l, and a base flange portion 5.
The upper deck B or takenp portion of the block comprises a spindle receiving por tion 6, a web portion T, base flange e and a take-up drum 9.
The upper deck B has a plurality of diametrinlly opposite grooved vertically disposed webs 12 extending radially from the spindle receiving portion (5 to the drum 9. The grooves in the webs: 12 which are designated by the numeral 13 extend or open through the drum 9 and form passageways for stripping mechanism (not shown nor described).
The upper or top deck B is removably se- 1927. sfilial No. 199.953.
cured to the bottom or lower deck A by bolts l5.
The drum portion 4: of the lower deck is provided with a wearing metallic ring 16 which has its top and bottom edges provided with verti ral tlanges lT adapted to project into grooves l8 and lil in the top face of the base. flange .Ti and the lower fare of the web 7 of the lower and top decks, re-pectivel v, so that the rings will be l'ixcdly clamped in position when the deck; A and ll are bolted ti'igethcl.
The wearing or outer side l'are ol' the ring to is either 'lorineil tapered or lierclcd inwardly from each edge toward its center as shown in l ignres Li and I of the drawings, or is formed concave as shown in l igure -l ot the drawings. \Vearing rings l'orined as descrihed ahove pcrniit wire ol various re din-lions to he drawn on the same hlorlr, since the wire is relieved b v the taper ol' the ring, thus fa ilitating slippage and preventing breakage of the wire.
The rings It; ma he formed lroni any metal. llowever. rings l'ornied l'roni renlrit'ugallv east hronme are particularly suit able lot this purpose.
It will he understood that while I have described my invention as pertaining to wire drawing hloclts it is not limited to such use, but, is applicahle to blochs l'or drawing rods and the like also, and the term wire as used throughout this specification and claim meant to also include rods and other similar articles.
A wire drawing block composed of two parts arranged one above the other and. rigidl bolted together, each ol' said parts having a wire receiving druln l'orlned thereon, circular grooves l tfl' ltltll in opposite tare; of said parts, said lower wire receiving drum being provided with a continuous onepiece removable metallic wearing ring. vertically extending tlange on the edge faces of said ring extending into said grooves whereby said ring is lixedlv clamped hetween the parts ol' said block. and said ring having its wire receiving lace constantly ta pered inwardly from each edge toward its center.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name.
STANLEY PUSHALSKI.
