IMPROVEMENT IN lRONlNG-TABLES.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, WILLIAM J. HUGHES and JOHN A. LOCKARD, both of Clyde, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Boards; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

Our invention relates to ironing-boards; and consists of a double, or large and small, ironing-board, hinged together and supported upon feet, and held by a screw-clamp upon the edge of a table.

Our invention relates particularly to the construction of the supporting-legs and securing-clamp, and to a spring-catch employed to hold the article being ironed, in connection with a small fall-leaf board hinged to the larger board, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side ele vation of our invention complete, and secured to the top of a table. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a planv view, showing the small ironing-board as folded down in the position when the larger board is in use.

A is a large ironing-board. To the under side is secured a pair of bracket-feet, B, and a bracket-clamp, 0, provided witha thumbscrew, 0. A is a somewhat smaller board, similar to A, and secured thereto by hinges a, placed on each side of an opening, A in the rear of the board A. D is a springcatch, operating in connection with a slight projecting flanged plate, d, secured in the end of the small board A E is an iron rest or stand, secured to the under side of board A and adapted to be folded around thereunder. Secured to the bottom or feet of the bracket-legs B, and to the inner top part of the mouth of the bracket-clamp c, are rubber or elastic pads or cushions b and 0. Thus, any wear or injury to the table or article of furniture to which the ironing-board is attached is avoided.

The operation of the device is as follows: The device is secured to a table or other convenient place, as shown in Fig. 1, the rubher or cushioned feet of the legs coming against the face of the article and preventing injury thereto and jar or rattling of the parts. If large articles are to be ironed the small'board is folded back or dropped down, as shown in Fig. 3. The article is then secured and held in place on the board by placing a portion of it under the spring-catch D, thus enabling the person to have the use of one hand to arrange the article while ironing, or for other purposes. When desired to iron small articles, or such things as shirt-bosoms, the small board is brought up, as shown in Fig. 2. The shirt is then slipped over it and secured to the board by clamping a portion of it in the spring-catch D. Thus it will be seen the securing-clamp acts to hold the article in place both on the large and small boards.

The iron rest or stand forms a convenient and handy support for the iron when not in use.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. Incombination with the large board A the small board A hinged to the rear end, and adapted'to be folded down out of the way, substantially as and for the purposes described.

2. In combination with the small board A the spring-clamp D 61, secured in the end thereof, and adapted to be used either with the large or small board, substantially as and for the purposes described.

3. In combination with the large board A the bracket-legs B, and clamp O 0, provided with rubber cushions or feet I) c, as and for the purposes described.

4. The ironing-board, composed of large board A, supported upon bracket-feet, and clamp B 0, small board A hinged to the larger board, provided in its end with a spring-catch, D d, and adapted to be folded or dropped down out of position when desired, and iron-rest E, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as described.
