My invention relates toin'lprovements in and connected with chain grates, more par ticularly those of the Babcock & lVilcoX type, and has for an object to provide an improved arrangement insuring that the side or sides ofthe furnace wall or walls will be kept free from clinker.
My invention will best be understood. from the following description taken with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view showing a portion of the run of a stoker equipped with an illustrative embodiment of my invention taken along line 11 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring .to the drawing, 10 are the carrying bars of the chain grate adapted to be driven in the usual manner by meansof a sprocket 11. At intervals of its length there are pivotally mounted, preferably on extensions of bars 10, scraping members 12 located adjacent to the edge of the stoker as illustrated each having a depending portion or tail-piece 13 adapted to cooperate witha ram plate 14, extending lengthwise of the stoker beneath the upper run in such wise that as the member 12 enters the furnace the depending portion 13 is displaced and the member 12 turned about its pivot in such manner that the nose 15 of the member 12 rises and it travels with the grate scrapes the side wall 16 of the furnace. Preferably I provide a similar scraping member 17 on the ends of the other carrying bars 10, except that no depending portion or tail-piece is provided. such members 17 and 12 assuming an inclined position extending approximately to the surface ofthe grate while on the upper run and outside the furnace or combustion chamber and bearing against one another, as shown. The cam plate '145 is preferably supported by the plate or casting 18 to which the cam member may be secured by bolts or rivets 19 as illustrated. The plate 18 is preferably provided with bolts 20 which may be formed integral with the plate and which in the form shown pass through sleeves 21 received in openings in the side member 22, the plates 18 being secured against the side member 22 by nuts 23 which engage the ends of the bolts 20. A chain grate stoker having a pivoted scrapermen'iber adjacent to the edge thereof and adjacent the furnace side wall and carried by the chain grate, said member having a depending portion, stationary means coacting with said depending portion to raise said member into a scraping position with respect to said side wall, and means for limiting the movement of said member beyond an effective scraping position.
3. A chain grate stoker having a pivoted scraper member adjacent to the edge thereof and adjacent the furnace side wall and carried by the chain grate, said member havingadepending portion, a cam surface extending lengthwise of the grate and coacting with said depending portion to rock said member into a scraping position, and means for limiting the movement of said member beyond an effective scraping position.
4. A chain grate stoker having a movable scraper member located at the edge thereof and relatively stationary means coaeting.

A chain grate stoker comprising carrying bars for the chain and having a row of scraper members pivoted to the chain grate carrying bars adjacent to the ends 10 thereof and the furnace side wall, said members normally occupying inclined positions and being in contiguous relationship on the upper surface of the grate and having surfaces substantially on a level with the grate vsurface insaid inclined positions, and means for raising at least one ofsaidrmembers to a scraping position whereby the members in advan're of said raised member are themselves raised to different heights and function to scrape said side wall.
