SIGNAL casinos Original application filed December 18, 1922, Serial No. 607,587.
October 6, 1923.
The invention is for use in connection with indicating mechanism of the type described and illustrated in our co-pending appllcations, filed March 31, 1922, Serial No. 457,234, and December 18, 1922, Serial No. 607,587, respectively, the. present application havlpg been divided out of application Serial 1N0. (507,587 mentioned above. The principal object of the present invention isto provide a signal casing having a plurality or signal lights therein and means for preventing the light from one signal from mtert ermg with the light from any of the other S]P,'Il2tlS, t111Cl also means for preventing the light trom any one signal from showing through the apertures provided for any other signal light. It is a further ob ect ot the invention to provide a casing of this sort which will permit of the removal of the cover portion without disturbing the signal lights. I
In accomplishing these objects we utilize a base portion to which is hinged a cover portion in which suitable apertures are arranged to fit over the various compartments in the casing in which the signal lights are placed. Vi e preferably construct the base port-ion with a partition which serves the double purpose of dividing the casing into compartments, and also providing a base to which the signal lights may be secured.
A preferred form of the invention is eX- emplified in the following description, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in. which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the signal casing.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the regulating shutters and adjusting screw.
Figure 8 is a perspective view of the in terior of the front portion of the signal casing, showing the position of the regulating shutters.
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view of the signal casing.
Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view on line AA of Figure 4.
In carrying out the invention we construct the signal casing with a base portion 47 and a cover portion 48, secured to the base por tion by hinges 49 and tastenings 50. Cover portion 48 is provided in front and on each side with two apertures, the aperture at the upper end of the cover portion such as at 51 being fitted with lenses of one color, and those at the lower end, as at 52, with lenses Divided and this application filed Serial No. 666,936.
of a ditl'erent color, as for instance white in the upper apertures to denote Ahead and red in the lower apertures, to denote ristern. The interior of the signal box is divided into upper and lower halves, by partition member 53, secured to. base por tion 47. On each side of this partition means to secure signal lights in place are provided. In. the form of the invention here illustrated, electric lamps 54 and 55 are shown, a pair of lamps wlth a corresponding pair of sockets being provided so that the lamps may be connected in series parallel in their respective signal circuits in order to insure the operation of at least one signal light in the event that one of the pair gets out of order. Partition 53 is fitted closely to the inner surface of the two halves of the signal casing, so that light from one compartment cannot leak into the other. In order to regulate the amount of the light given out by the apertures in the signal casing, shutters 56 and 57 are fitted within cover portion 48, as shown in Figure 3. Shutter 57 is provided with three apertures 58 at one end, which fit over the corresponding apertures in cover 48, and is also provided with V-shaped notches 59 atthe opposite end to fit over the corresponding apertures at the other end of cover 48. Shutter 56 has similar openings 60 and notches 61, so that by turning adjusting screw 62 one end of which has a left hand thread engaging lug 63 on shutter 57 and the other a. right hand thread engaging lug 64 on shutter 56, shutters 56 and 57 can be moved longitudinally one over the other in a manner to increase or decrease the size of the openings formed by apertur 58 and notches 61 and the openings formed by apertures 60 and notches 59, thus allowing more or less light to show through the corresponding openings in cover 48. The means thus provided to regulate the amount of light given out by the signal casing add greatly to the etficiency of the device, and permit it to be used during the day or night on the bridge of a vesselwithout interference with the observance of other instruments.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a signal casing, a base, a cover fitting tightly on said base and forming a chamber therewith, said cover having a plurality of pairs of apertures forming two groups thereof, a source of light for each of said groups, a partition on said base supporting said source of light and dividing said chamber into light: proof compartn-ientseach adjacent one'of said aperture groups, means includ ing a pair of superposed apertured shutters extending over allol said apertures for simultaneously regulating the amount of light passing from all of said lightprooi C0111- SAMUEL MILLS.
