IMPROVEMENT IN MARKING'POTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,473. dated September '7, 1875; application filed February 25, 1875.

To all 'whom it may concrn:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENBY ROD- DEN, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a new and Improved Marking-Pot; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of 'this specification- Figure l being a top view of the markingpot; Fig. 2, a central Vertical section of the same.

Like letters designate corresponding'parts in both figures.

The object of my invention-is to produce a pot for containing ink With which to mark boxes and bales or other packages and articles of merchandse, that shall contain the ink at all times safe from spilling out, secure against evaporation and drying up, and that shall be very convenient to use, and shall always have the stopper and brush secured thereto. Its construction is substantially as follows:

The body A of the pot may have any suitable size and form, the cover or top aI of which, however, is made convex, to give it firmness and strength to. resist the frequent pressure upon it in putting in the stopper and other manipulations. This top a is either soldered permanently to the body, or is secured tight and fast thereto. In the top a is formed or secnred a month-tube, b, projecting inward, and somewhat tapering or funnel-shaped, for more easily applying and fitting a stopper, and inserting and dripping the brush. The projection inward prevents the ink from flowingout of the pot should it be accidentally tipped over. The stopper B, which may properly be made of Wood, and is made to fit accurately the funnel-shaped mouth b, is secured on the pot so as to be retained thereon, whether inserted in the mouth tube or not, and is mounted so that it can be easily swungover the month-tube, and inserted therein, or drawn out of the tube and swung back out of the way while using ink for marking. This mounting is by means of a hinged yoke, d, of peculiar construction, consisting of a Wire, a coil or two in the middle of which is wound around the neck of the stopper, and its ends are bent and terminate in eyes or loops, which are linked to other eyes or staples attached to the pot. The handle f is held in the left hand when carried, so that the stopper, When swung ofi' from the mouth-tube,wi1l be out of the Way of the right hand, and of the'brush held therein for dipping into the ink also, a spring holder or clip, g, for holding the brush or brushes on the pot When not in use, is attached to the pot, near the handle thereof, as the most convenient and least obstructing position Wherein to place it. This holder is of novel construction, being formed of a single piece of Wire, so bent as to embrace and hold the brush in two places, the ends of the Wire being soldered to the pot. In forming the bends for holding the brush the Wire is coiled, substantially as shown, so as to give a spiral spring elastic action to the holds or clamps. I Inside of the pot a ball, h, of stone, marble, metal, or other heavy and sufliciently-hard material, is placed, and ser'ves as a grinder and a stirrer of the ink When it is settled, or When fresh ink is added to the remainder of that previously contained in the pot.

The stopper B can be throWn out of or int the month-tube by a jerk of the hand while it holds the pot, unless the stopper is pressed tightly into the month-tube, so that the whole device is very convenient to use in all respects.

What I claim as my invent-ion, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A marking-pot, A, constructed With a convex top, a, and a funnel-shaped mouth-tube, b, and provided With a stopper, B, attached to a swinging yoke, d, with a spring brush-holder, g, and with a ball, h, inside, all substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
